As an American student, I want to point out that the word "filial" is actually very commonly used in the education system when teaching the Chinese part of world history. Specifically, they would teach the concept 孝顺 as "filial piety". Therefore, I don't think the machine or translators are that far off when using the word "filial". That being said, "Bobby being an obedient son" does sound more natural in a daily setting.

As a Singaporean, who have studied both languages at native level, I believe filial is quite commonly used as a translation for 孝順. Also the translators didn't ask for some basic pre-translation information, things like intended audience, tone and registers, medium, liberties regarding the translation, etc. Which is honestly quite odd.

The video was interesting and I don’t mean to criticise - the translation of the passage is undoubtedly challenging as evidenced by how professional translators too found some difficulty in it. I do however have a tiny issue with the “model” translation at the end. It seems to suggest that the “little girl act” is an idiosyncrasy of Kathy’s, and the phrase “get her way” seems to cast Kathy in a negative light. These are, as far as I can tell, not implied in the original Chinese text, which seems to pin the blame solely on Marcus. While I am not familiar with all the Chinese slang in the text, based on what I gleaned off from the explanations throughout the video, I would translate the passage as follows: A while back, a good friend of mine, Kathy, broke up with her boyfriend, Marcus. Though he was filial (or if the word “filial” is to be avoided, “a dutiful son”), it was to the extent of being a “mummy’s boy”, ever-submissive to his mother’s will. Kathy’s cutesy attempts to woo him over were to no avail. Today, Kathy told me out of the blue about her new boyfriend, Bobby. Whilst many see him as rather unexceptional, I hear he has an oft-hidden wilder side to his personality; he is apparently also a jerk. I am concerned for Kathy and wish her the best of luck. The tone of the original Chinese passage seems gossipy, and the above, while (I believe) retaining most of the semantic meaning of the original text, seems verbose and may come across as having a more formal tone. Below is a summarised version with slang thrown in: So my girlfriend Kathy recently changed boyfriends because the previous one was a flaccid mummy’s boy. The new one’s some kind of incel LOL. Kinda makes me worried not gonna lie, like GOOD LUCK Kathy! There is likely a more suitable term than “flaccid” that I am unable to think of at the moment, but I shall submit the above for your review and consideration.

I would like to further add that the sentence “Kathy 对他撒娇根本没有用” has an additional layer of difficulty in translating that was not highlighted in the video. The purpose of her acting cute is ambiguous in the original text, which while perhaps sounds natural in Chinese, feels awkward to omit in English. There are several possible reasons Kathy might be whining based on the context of the passage. From general to specific: 1) Marcus in general does not take Kathy’s advice, even when she employs the potent art of “cuteness”. This is juxtaposed against his steadfast obedience to his mother, further drawing Kathy’s ire. 2) Kathy and Marcus’ mother have had disagreements over several issues and Marcus always sided with his mother, even when Kathy whined cutely. 3) Kathy perceives Marcus as a “mummy’s boy”, something she feels uncomfortable about. She has confronted Marcus cutely about this specific issue, but he refused to change. These all appear to me to be viable interpretations of the Chinese text, and the English translation must correspondingly be generic enough to fit all three interpretations, thus complicating the task of translating the passage. The translation at the end of the video managed to avoid this issue with “get her way”, but ran into the aforementioned problem due to the negative connotation associated with the phrase.

I would just say "really cares for his or her parents" 🤣 撒嬌 would probably be translated as kawaii among native speakers. "Like she's acting all kawaii "but that requires some cultural knowledge too haha

I think kawaii is totally different from 撒嬌. Kawaii means acting all cute and adorable, but "撒嬌" means more like "Spoiled" or even "Misbehaved" from someone knowing or thinking that they are being loved by the person they 撒嬌 with. Baidu 撒娇 : "意思是指仗着受宠而故意作态。 出自明张四维《双烈记·引狎》：“专会撒娇使性，那管我债重家倾。”

Hence why the translator should always ask for more details. For example translating a speech vs a novel are very different, when translating something like a speech, accuracy is important while translating something like a dialogue the character of the speaking party should be taken into consideration as using different word with similar meaning might affect the portrayal of the character in question.

You have to use “儿” after ”姐们” (or put it in the middle between “姐” and “们”), otherwise, it doesn’t really make sense. That’s also why Google and Baidu translated “姐们” to “sisters”.

As a Chinese, obedient came to my mind first but on a second thought I found it somewhat partial because孝顺 can be used very specific to someone’s (grand)parents only and obedient only matches the second character in fact. There is simply no equivalent in English and I tend to adopt the word that’s being used by the professionals who are devoted to introducing Chinese culture to the world. Laoma said native speakers don’t even know filial, so let’s just assume that the academic guys coined the word.

filial and acting coquettish sound good. The use of 'filial' is common in Asia. As for acting coquettish, that is commonly used as translation in most webnovels. Not 100% the exact translation, but this is as close as one could get. They are a couple of words that I have a hard time translating too : 幸福，（卑鄙、无耻、下流 all three when one is insulting another in a same sentence) and other emotion vocabularies

"filial" is very uncommon word. Merriam-Webster defines it as "of, relating to, or befitting a son or daughter" (属于、关于或适合于儿子或女儿的）or ”having or assuming the relation of a child or offspring“ （拥有或承担孩子或后代的关系的）。It doesn't seem having the exact same meaning as 孝顺。People use different word to express different aspect of 孝顺。For example, in The Count of Monte Cristo (基督山伯爵), "Close to him, dressed in entirely new clothes, advanced smilingly Count Andrea Cavalcanti, the dutiful son, whom we also know. ". Here the dutiful son has a similar meaning of 孝子。#英语顶呱呱

Actually, on the Western net, there's a whole community of various Asian language translators. Mostly, these translators translate Chinese, Japanese, or Korean into English. A lot of these people are heritage speakers too. I'm one of the Chinese to English translators, and honestly, these translations were not worth your money. Even in my specific translation group, there are a lot of higher quality translators who could have translated it better than what you got. Heck, even I could have translated it better. And we all work for free, except we do kind of get money through views by having ads on the website.

很多句子可以翻出大概意思，但是那个意境很难翻出来，比如今天中美领导人对话，习主席有一句：‘我将无我，不负人民’，还有很多押韵的古诗，那个意境，那个韵味没法翻译。可能英文诗意境同样不好用中文表达。闷骚的准确含义就是形容一个人的外表温文尔雅，文静，纯情，传统，一本正经但内心狂野，疯狂，放荡不羁，有想象力创造力，甚至有些淫荡，其外表给人的印象与其内在形成强烈反差的一个描述。

These are my answers. 孝顺 = being a good son/daughter, will probably add an explanation of always listening to his/her dad/mom even if you don’t have this phrase in the original paragraph just to make sure people not familiar with Chinese culture can understand 撒娇 = playing cute. This actually works for both girls 撒娇 or kids 撒娇. Maybe I can refine it as “playing cute and flirty”. 屌丝 = loser. That works perfectly. 闷骚 = mild when first met, wild in bed 🙈🙈🙈 渣男 = asshole / jerk. May use asshole for some gayer contents to make it more fun 🙈🙈🙈 加油吧 = Good luck / Wish you luck. You can probably give these to your subscribers first and see how well they can do it, and give them a prize 😝 I’m pretty confident to get the prize though but hey, competition is always welcomed 😂

"woo with her cuteness" now that's a great way to say 撒娇. I feel that sometimes, you cannot directly translate the word to a corresponding word so you have to find a way to convey an equivalent emotion. Also, it seems that you have settled on the usage of "player" too, I chose it for my attempt also. I feel that it is better than jerk because it is limited to people who are assholes to their boy/girlfriend, and thus more accurate. However, 「屌丝」does not automatically entail "annoying", so it isn't really "dick". I think "loser", "scrub" all work better. I chose "LVM" for my translation because of the way 屌丝's meaning has shifted amidst rising feminazism in China, but that's taking quite some liberties with interpreting what the original author means.

I would also be a bit picky on how you translated 闷骚……闷骚 could be either positive or negative depending on the context, but seems like you are translating it from the positive perspective as “he’s passionate inside”. I would’ve done it like “mild when we met, wild in bed”, similar to “Peter Parker on the streets, Spider-Man in the sheets”. 🙈

To me, failing to find proper alternatives to replace the expressions in the source text does not really matter. What CANNOT be tolerated is that the target text and translators' profiles are full of basic grammatical mistakes and spelling errors, which, like you say, are NOT a demonstration of "professional" translators' quality. By the way, "filial piety" is an acceptable translation of "孝順" to me. I would translate "渣男" into “fuckboy” or "jerk".

I don’t think “how cute and sweet Kathy is to him” really translate to something like 撒娇. There’s a more playful or intentional emotion in the word 撒娇 but your translation doesn’t seem to reflect that. 闷骚 also doesn’t necessarily mean that someone is into quirky sex-stuffs. I would say 老马’s “Peter Parker on the street, Spider-Man in the sheet” gets more of that vibe but still, doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with quirky sex-stuffs...
