The original St Nicholas was red, but father christmas was green. This is because St Nicholas' fest and christmas were originally seperate festivities. Some centuries ago, they were slapped together in Britain, moving the combination of the two festivities to christmas. The red santa claus as seen in America is a result of the British version of St Nicholas/Father christmas mixing again with the more traditional form of St Nicholas as seen in The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, etc, being dressed as a bishop or a more general holyman in red. This is likely also where the use of the name Santa Claus comes from: Sinterklaas, the name for St Nicholas in The Netherlands and small parts of Germany, where St Nicholas' fest and Christmas are still seperate events. There is also a good chance that eastern european influences added to the modern American image of Santa Claus (sleigh, reindeer, elves, etc.)

the real person Saint Nicholas comes from a town called Myrna, which is based in modern day Turkey. His statues show green clothing for the older statues but the more modern ones have included the red suit as well.
