I used to work on those back in the day. The common problems were, glow plugs not lasting, hard to start cold and injector pump failures and an occasional head gasket failure..I never had one just up quit running though. As long as you don't overload and expect too much out of it, it will run for a long time. Keep water separator and fuel filter clean and change the oil OFTEN don't run it out of diesel.. that's a pain to bleed them. Very cool old truck!

Yes sir, just gotta give them a little TLC and they seem to run pretty good. Only problem we've had with this truck so far is the power steering is leaking. One place I've seen a lot of the 6.2 on is the YT channel "Not for Hire Square Body". He still uses old square bodies for regular work. Anyways, thanks for watching and have a great rest of the day - Everett

I’ve got a 91’ gmc 2500 with the 6.2 and I find it to be a lot more powerful then it sounds on paper. Since it’s a 91’ and no emissions equipment it produces 165hp and 330 pound-feet of tourque. I love the truck and the engines they are fantastic and if people just looked into them they would see they aren’t bad at all and actually very reliable. Love the motor and video!

They're very reliable, until you want more power out of them. People put turbos on these things with 20 lbs of boost then when the motor blew sky high it was the engine's fault, not theirs. It wasn't meant to be a power house, it was the economy option to the 454. It's a v8 block, not an inline 6 like most modern turbo diesels are. People wanted to use it in a fashion that the engineers that designed it never intended. It was just a misunderstood engine is all. It's as reliable as anything else when you use it for what it was made for.

This truck is the 'dad bod' of trucks. It's nothing special, its guts have the consistency of a marshmallow, but it's a warrior. That truck has seen some serious shit - you can see it in its scars. That's what makes it special. It's not strong, but it's tough. It's seen the world a few times and there's nothing you can throw at it that it won't say no to... even if it has to do it very slowly.

@@TwoFarmBoys & 1982 was the first year for the 6.2 litre diesel V8. It replaced the previous 350 diesel V8 which was introduced in 1978 but was only available on the half ton 2 wheel drive pickups at the time. The 6.2 litre on the other hand was available on all models except for the 2 wheel drive K5 Blazers & Jimmys. 1982 was also the last year for 2 wheel drive K5 Blazers & Jimmys & six cylinder motors available in them. In 1983, 4 wheel drive, 305 V8, power steering, & power brakes became standard on the K5 Blazers & Jimmys. In 1988, the 350 gas V8 became the base motor on the Suburbans, K5 Blazers, & Jimmys. 1987 was the last year for the half ton & three quarter ton regular cab pickups with that body design, but the one ton regular cab pickups on the other hand were still in production up through 1989, & same with the rest of the models except they stayed in production up through 1991.

Everett, i hope you have been schooled on the proper care and cleaning of a Square Body Chebby...lol You def want to do a good job of hosing out the tray below the windshield and the pockets between the cab and fenders below the door hinges a couple times a year. I also carefully rinse the upper part of the bed above the wheel wels in the rear. I spray some used motor oil in those same areas with a garden sprayer in the fall before our winter hits here in the Pacific Northwet, just to keep the rust at bay. Neat ol' truck. I found your channel from the Cadillac Race vid...i didn't know I'd missed this one.😎 Happy New Year and hopefully ya had a Merry Christmas as well man.👍

Thank you! That's great advice! I definitely try to keep it clean. We don't have too much road salt here, but the mud will definitely rot things out if you don't care for it. It's a great truck. Thanks for watching! God bless and Happy New Year! - Everett

With the 6.2L the horsepower was irrelevant. The torque was the power. The LH6 engines were hampered by emissions crap while the LL4 engines didn't have the egr/epr. All the engines were de-tuned at the factory. Using the Stanadyne Pump that the Army uses would give you 180 HP and more torque. If you had to replace an engine GM Goodwrench crated long block were available for $3450. Cheap to maintain compared to today's diesels. Some told me that they still make the 6.5L in Mexico.

Sweet old truck. Swap out the old harmonic balancer for a new one ASAP. The balancers are weak spot. Those old balancer fly apart real easy... and if that happens your engine is toast

Man your truck would smoke mine! Find a flat 3 mile stretch with a tail wind and i can hit 60 mph just before i run out of asphalt. No idea why either. Rebuilt pump, injectors, glow electronics, electric lift pump, no matter what i throw at the old girl she just wont get out of her own way lol Awesome to see 6.2’s runnin like a top!! Keep her goin man, shell run forever!

Huh, interesting. I have a video that I'm just finishing up where we drag race (not officially or fast) an Escalade with it. What kind of transmission does it have? This has the 3-speed auto TH350. What gearing does it have? That might be the difference as well. Thanks for watching and God bless - Everett

Mines a c20 2wd, shes got the th400 and 4:10 gears (as far as the sticker in the glove box says) but it doesnt seem to have been molested, so id guess its still 4:10 out back. Ill keep an eye out for the drag race! Its hard for me to tell if my trucks on par with other 6.2’s cause there isnt any other 6.2’s around me that ive seen. So now and then i get on here and look for just a driver video to compare mine to. Maybe if i get out early enough today and still have some daylight ill make a video and post it up! See if you and some other 6.2 owners can tell me id it seems normal or not lol Never had a diesel before besides an old tractor, and the tractor prolly had better 60’ times than the truck does 😂 Thanks for the reply man! Hope yall have a great day!

@@brianbvachek3219 Okay, yeah, I'm not really sure why it would be sluggish. I was hoping you would say something like, "It has 3:08 gears." Lol. I sometimes check forums like "Diesel Place" and others similar to that to get ideas. It's kind of hard to find a lot of info on these diesels. I hope you get it figured out though. Let me know if you need anything on it and I will be sure to watch that video if you get it done. God bless and thanks for watching - Everett

The main problems with them is the mechanical fuel pump on the motor back to the tank and when that went out or the fuel tank had a bad seal on the fuel cap people would crank the motor over till the battery’s were dead or the starter died otherwise that’s the most reliable motor you will ever have
@TwoFarmBoys
@TwoFarmBoys Жыл бұрын
Appreciate the advice! The engine's been good to me so far. Did have to replace the starter at one point but I don't recall it being related to the fuel pump that time. God bless - Everett

If you have a 1998-2001 Dodge Cummins truck, can you swap out the Cummins engine with a 6.2 Diesel engine?
@TwoFarmBoys
@TwoFarmBoys Жыл бұрын
I don't know how easy of an install it would be, but I would think it is POSSIBLE. You're saying replace the cummins engine (I'm assuming the motor is blown?) with the 6.2 Detroit in the Dodge pickup? The 6.2 is a great engine, but the only engine that is more simple would probably be the Cummins. Parts would I'm sure be much cheaper for it too as they're less rare. Unless it's a budget thing I would try to keep it as a Cummins. - Everett

Do you own the jd tractor, or is it your dad’s tractor? If it’s your own i would recommend selling it and getting something different. For the money you can get for that you could buy a really nice 4020 with a loader, and it would be just as reliable if you found one with around 5 to 6 thousand hours
@TwoFarmBoys
@TwoFarmBoys 3 жыл бұрын
It was my grandmother's. She left it to me when she died. I will probably sell it once it no longer makes sense to have around. It's starting to get a little small for my operation, but it still works for most stuff. Plus, it's paid off, and she bought it new so less likely to have surprise mechanical issues. But, I might buy a larger tractor at some point soon for cheap. I could use two tractors in the field for raking and baling. Thanks for watching - Everett
