I Install & Review the BAK Revolver X4s Tonneau Cover on my 2024 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Pickup Truck

I have to admit upfront that I typically don't spend this much on tonneau covers. For the last 3 trucks I just bought $250-$300 soft roll-up style tonneau covers, but this time I splurged and went with the BAK Revolver X4s Tonneau Cover. It's almost like a hybrid between soft vs hard and roll-up vs retractable. Bought this cover for my 2024 Chevy 2500HD a few weeks ago and really like the look and functionality of it. I took the measurements per the instructions and it said I did not need to use the shims - installed by myself in 30-40 minutes. A week later when driving on the interstate at 75mph my kids noticed a section of the cover lifting up off one of the side rails - about 3 feet behind the cab. Evidently the little teeth on the cover were not falling into the rail and getting locked down in that section. No adjusting or moving the cover could get the teeth on both sides to fall into their groove, so I had to go back, take it all apart, and add the shims to the rails. Now everything seems to be working and locked down good. Just an FYI for anyone that gets this cover and notices a section not getting latched down - might need to add those shims to close the gap and make it fit more snug in certain areas.

I like it. I have the bak flip but it has its disadvantages, like completely blocking the rear window when it's open 😊

Just purchased this for a 2023 RAM Rebel 1500 $1300 inc tax and delivery. I am waiting on delivery and installing it and for the money I have serious expectations. With the $$ of a truck these days I was not going with a lesser tonneau this one fitted the bill. I have watched every KZbin on it regardless of truck. I think I have made the right choice considering the 5 year warranty and reviews. Time will tell. Thank you for your review.

Thanks for your review. I too have the Truxedo Trucksport Tonneau cover. I have been using it for a few years and put it to the test (two tropical storms and a hurricane). It has never leaked. You are right that it not as secure as the hard cover style but you can't beat the price point IMO...

Had the same one on my AT4 for a little over a year. No complaints. Getting it on the Carbon Pro bed was a bit more challenging, but it works.

Awesome cover. Sturdy and well made. No issue with it. Like the fact that you can simply roll it up, still have your rear view window unblocked and have full access to your bed.

The reason I bought this cover is because of the aluminum construction. My advice is to use where the rubber is underneath so you don't pinch your fingers. The only problem I have had is securing the rubber pieces by the tailgate. They were replaced once by BAK and I now have glued them in place. I now have a 5th wheel and visibility is great. Truck looks great. Looking at those as well. I have the hardcover BAK BAKFLIP MX4 hardcover on a shortbed f150. BAk does a nice job with materials and finish. No problems other than a few broken plastic parts that BAK provides a kit to repair. Obviously, others have similar issues when a kit provides the exact parts that break. Despite a few minor issues that don't affect performance, I would buy mine again. It has held up well in the Houston heat and rain these last 3.5 years. I use frequently with partial loads where I find it handy to only unfold one or two panels. Also with a load sticking over the tailgate such as long lumber, you can lay the last panel atop the load. I have found this partial panel use so handy I would not purchase one without that ability. This one was about a grand pre covid and inflation pricing. Same cover is now about 200 more at 1200. Looks like yours has a better water seal and very flush. I also like the ability to see out the rear glass when rolled up...the panels block it.

Biggest issue with this cover is it isn’t functional in the winter with hard freezes and ice. What you’ll find is that the folds hard freezes to the rails and you have to yank pretty hard to break it free. Even after breaking free, you may also have to force it back down to try and secure it. Other than that, I have really enjoyed mine.

I really PREFER this concept BUT…As someone has already mentioned and should not be overlooked is the way this product is built. It needs fabric and glue. Unfortunately this causes more of a weak point than the flip covers when it comes to peeling and separating of the fabric due to inconsistencies in adhesive application. Some may last longer than others depending on environment and usage but the weakness still remains. Great concept but too open to problems. I may have to stick with the more simple operation of tri-fold. Good luck on it lasting you 👍🏻✌🏻

I hear you. Some others have commented about the glue as well. Mine is holding up just fine so far at 9 mo, but I also don't park in sun frequently so it isn't subjected to much abuse. I can see how the sun could break it down though. I'll plan to give update in next few months.

Thank you! I am trying out the Dewalt Tough System 2.0. I got the two drawer module + small tool box and it just barely fits heightwise. The drawers make it easier to access stuff. Great video! I think it’s the best video out there covering the X4s. I’ve been doing my research on which cover is best for my needs, and I’m leaning towards this one. My only concern is the loss of width at the top of the bed rails. I have a 2024 GMC AT4 and tow a 5th wheel. I’m curious if the rails of the cover are going to impede with the pin box of trailer when turning 90 degrees. Do you happen to know the width between the rails of the cover? This measurement would help me tremendously. Thank you in advance

Thanks for your patience. I was able to get those measurements. On mine, the rails imped into the bed approximately 2.5 in on both sides, so that's about what you would lose in terms of clearance. The good news is they're flushed with the top of the bed rails, so nothing protruding upward, thinking of the way pin boxes are slanted typically, so just depends on your setup I guess at the end of the day.

I’m considering this roll up version or the BAK flip MX4 for my 2019 Tundra. So far, from the videos and reviews I have watched, it looks like the main drawback to this cover is the strength of the slat surface versus the MX4. And the drawback to the MX4 is loosing rear window visibility when flipped all the way back compared to the Revolver. So, I’m still undecided…

I just installed the Revolver and had the bulge on the driver side as described 12:09 min into the review. I analyzed the design and assembly and found an assembly error on that side. I solved the issue and now mine lays flat and the locking blade (that runs the length of the rail) now engages with those segments. There are three rubber trax like pieces that need to be moved about 1/2” toward the middle (like on the other side). The assembly has them crimped in so they won’t move. This results in a spring-like action when you tighten down the two knobs underneath, yet lays flat when there is no tension on the knobs. That won’t make sense until you stare at and observe from underneath. Why is it the pass side is fine but driver side is not. Overall, it’s a great concept but not mfd at the level of quality I’d expect for the price. I would not buy it again.

How is it with rain? Any water in the bed? When I have my bakflip it started leaking inside pretty bad

So far, completely dry. Only spot I get water is around sides of tailgate out back, but that'd be with any cover just to tailgate not having seal (can always buy a tailgate seal if desired). I wonder if any leak issues folks have could point to impromper install at bulkhead or sides...too tight or too loose perhaps?

Great question. Yes, indeed you can. There is a release on either end right about where the inner tailgate starts/stops (the cord/loop pulls downward).

Pretty much like a roll-up soft cover, so either all open or all closed. You'd have to devise a way to secure it in a halfway point as it's just rolling up on itself (on top). Probably a way to do it, but just would have to figure out how to secure as the wind could really push the cover to unfold.

@@AdventureRocks I think it’s maybe a jig issue on their end… bend that spot slightly backward, the channel is a little collapsed and doesn’t “fall” into position freely… bending backward a little opens that space up just a hair and it’s fixed

Don't intend to be negative, but mine is less than 6 months old and the vinyl is shrinking from the sides and the adhesive used has failed in three areas. For $1200, I would look at another option.

Great vid - thinking of this one for my truck. Do you know how far into the bed off the edge of the bed rail does that whole mechanism measure? Thank you, appreciate the feedback. Yes, I just measured and the top portion of trim that sits above rail and it protrudes 1-5/8" into bed on both sides. Then the lower portion that the teeth rest on protrudes 2-1/2" into bed both sides. So I believe that 2-1/2" dimension both sides is the one to clear for a toolbox.

Not really... It essentially floats on the rails when it is unlocked.

If your bike rack mounts in the stake pocket it holes on truck it should work...possibly minor modifications. But, if the bike mount relies on clipping under the bed rails like the tonneau cover, then there would be a conflict. So mostly depends on specific truck model and specific bike rack in terms of compatibility.

Great question. I haven't noticed any noise so far. In fact I drove the other day with tailgate down due to lumber hanging out back, but tonneu shut and even without support of tailgate it was completely silent.

Thanks for your review. My concern is the vinyl covering on the top side. How well will it hold up over time exposed to the elements, particularly the sun and heat down in the south. I've seen reviews where the vinyl has separated from the aluminum slats but covered under the five year warranty. I'm on the fence between this roll back or a retractable. There's about a $1k difference in cost. I really don't want to lose space with a retractable. One thing you may want to think about is a product to help protect the vinyl from uv exposure. Here's a product that's highly rated for that purpose. You may consider using it. 303 Products Aerospace Protectant - UV Protection

Just being candid. However, I REALLY like this cover so far especially that I don't lose bed space with a canister and that it has such a clean look.

The X4s is much more secure than velcro or snap style as it has teeth all along the edges. Certainly someone could take a crow bar and eventually get in, but much harder than just bare hands compared to velcro style.

Yes, I've always had the Bed Rugs on my trucks mainly keep stuff from sliding around and easier on the knees when I'm in the bed. I never secure/fasten them, just lay them like a mat since it is covered. They are like a thick carpet/cushion, but 100% plastic fibers so pretty easy to clean too. I like them. But you have only had it a month. For $1200 I want to hear it's still performing well 7-10 years from now. I hear a lot of positive initial install reviews and a lot of negative reviews and warranty replacements shortly thereafter. Am I asking too much out of a bed cover? Seems like folks are happy to get 3-4 years out of one. $300/year cost of ownership is too high for me.

Get a Diamondback tonneau cover. American made, the best security, and has a Lifetime warranty. You will pay a tad bit more, but once you own one, you will never go back to these silly covers that leak, fade, and start to break down in a few years.

At first I thought the same thing, but it's got a nice premium look to it and the materials seem to be a higher quality. So I can see why it's more than other ones that I used previously. And someone else pointed out it is still less $$ than a retractable style. But, I can hear you on the price...definitely a valid concern.
