Few mod players ever have relation to the actual mod developers Alex hasnt totally abandoned the project, but its definitely been put on the back burner over the last few years given the slowing of his periodic updates

Add Optifine or Rubidium. There are also other performance mods that might help you such as Better FPS, Clumps, Chunky, etc. Also make sure to allocate enough ram to the game (around 6GB)
