Well, you are being very kind to ISRO with the "really underwhelming" bit on the public outreach front. :) For such a senior official to say things like "you guys keep shifting social media platforms", "we don't have an Instagram account or a Twitter account" sounded like the lamest of excuses. I think he nailed the problem when he answered that the Outreach team consists of 2 or 3 ISRO scientists dedicating some of their (possibly personal) time in contributing to the public outreach....therein lies the problem....the Outreach Team ought to be a dedicated team whose raison d'etre must be to simplify the technical content of the past, ongoing and upcoming missions into bite-sized nuggets that can be digested easily by the masses of all ages.... ideally in atleast English and Hindi, to begin with. IMHO, we don't need scientists to create such content; what we really need dedicated social-media-savvy content creators employed by ISRO and scientists to only review the content for correctness before it is published. Any excuse implying "Oh, we are a scientific and engineering organization and therefore we don't feel the need to do an outreach to the country..." is rather condescending! At the end of the day, while we are all extremely proud of the ISRO scientists, the organization must not forget that it was started with and continues to be supported by the Indian taxpayer's money, especially in the pure science mission front. Therefore, public outreach must be a part of the objectives of ISRO....not necessarily a primary level objective, I agree, but atleast a close secondary one. ISRO definitely owes it to the nation!

I know right! Its sad that we have high tech studio rooms with elaborate discussions and Ultra detailed high quality visual, audio and animation coverage for a Silly Cricket tournament like IPL and Nothing and even worse coverage for historic events like these that defines the capability and technological demonstration missions of an Entire Nation! Which are way more important than anything else at this point of time! ISRO is very old school and doesn't care about public outreach, which is important to inspire young minds and make them more interested towards science!

@ujjawalsharma792 Жыл бұрын
Sorry to bulge in just a thought, maybe read it and reply with your views😅.. Why is isro avoiding marketing on scale, 2 reasons I could think of.. 1) NASA is a large part of us ecosystem where in even after ossification till this day every common citizen and members of Congress criticise NASA for their spendings which are aggravated on their failures and my heart pains to say that some mistakes could make a history out of isro's many ambitious missions. So it is a smart move like Chinese to focus on your work, be specialised in it and let the world know only if confronted which challenged national security (This point because more marketing will make isro more visible and the subject of discussion often and not all discussion are of your point of view **POSITIVE** for isro..humans😢) 2) NASA is pioneer in space research and has a strong military arm too.nasa has been successful in getting funds in the name of research but for isro I guess main discussion with goi is much on national security for the country so objective move should be of abstraction which isro does great, releasing only required minimum info

What I deduced from this interview is that ISRO doesn't have the necessary resources to do something like that, and the PR we are getting is wholly voluntary. I don't see it changing till the budget gets increased somehow. The space culture we want in india will be given to us by private firms. Soon enough don't worry.

@@VALAR_Morgulis. I do. My point is if they have 1 or 2 people in pr. They are all they need for some good outreach (even though that is not the primary objective of ISRO) provided they somewhat understand the social media landscape. It's not their job, I get it. And I'm not asking them (as in the actual core org) to specifically do it. And so whatever their "PR" organization is, or whoever it's under, should either be replaced with someone who actually goes around doing some work, or remove the post entirely and let whatever govt organization handle it. As far as the papers or research material and data is considered. That could be (and is) managed by scientist anyways. Poor allocation of resources is how I'd put it. Further, this gives them a good excuse to selectively talk about failures and or missions in general. Which kinda is against the whole transperency thing.

I was going to say that it'd have resulted in short and non-descriptive responses from his end but after watching more of it, it does feel like that they are way _too_ specific. For instance, here at 8:27 (THE question I was looking forward to), he asks in the context of lifespan / durability which could've easily been an open ended question : "What changes compared to before to lander / rover?". You can see that the chief took it upon himself to add to it, which shows that he'd have responded with breadth as well if prompted correctly

"You guys keep changing social media, not our problem" , "outreach department is one or tow people" - maybe hire better social media managers, single good person can do magic given the manageable frequency of launches and missions. Saying "we get work done via volunteers" in this age is not the answers we look forward to.

*Man, why didn't you stick only to the more interesting topics?!?!?!* Forget about your silly AI image generation questions! That's some fad of the moment, don't pester the ISRO Chairman with that! Dammit, why waste Chairman's time with such petty stuff?! You were troubling him with your own housekeeping matters! We want more goodies on SC-200, methalox engine, NGLV, RLV, SPADEX, all the cool future stuff! Glad you did get to such topics, but I wanted more on these. I'd have loved to hear more on Electric Thrusters, more on SSLV, more on Artemis, more on Joint India-Japan Lunar Mission, etc.

Mission first makes sense but giving technically deeper information to the enthusiast audience between scientist and laymen will increase scientific temperament in the society and generate better outcomes for all science related fields and even industries. Though it could be sad that viewers of such content is less, such interactions over sustained time is the antidote to hyper sensationalism and knee jerk reactions. Thank you both and hoping for status updates turning into defined projects

The discussion was good overall in terms of questions asked, but it could have been more inclusive and not kind of hostile, particularly on PR questions. Also I think we should appreciate Somnath sir for sticking up with rather aggressive questioning and taking the whole conversation amicably. Just one note, when such senior person is on camera it is expected that we show ourselves on camera which definately changes the conversation tone.

First off,Congratulations to all my Fellow Gareeb Scientists.We could learn from errors and get better just like ISRO does all the time.We shall relentlessly push for better PR from ISRO until it gets addressed.But we shall make a strong case with ISRO next time. S.Somanth has been very kind and patient in taking questions beyond CY3.I am sure it speaks volumes about his sincere intentions in encouraging the curiosity built around ISRO among the youth of this country. He might have come across a bit sharp but I am sure it's just a knee jerk reaction. GS has uncovered a wide spectrum of things for us with this interview.Cant appreciate him enough. I could see brighter things on the horizon for us as a community. Just keep feeding your curiosity as always and best things will follow.

It is disheartening that we invest in high-tech studio rooms equipped with intricate discussions and exceptionally detailed visuals, audio, and animation for a seemingly trivial Cricket tournament like the IPL. Meanwhile, there is a glaring lack of coverage and even worse attention given to historically significant events that showcase a nation's capabilities and technological advancements. These events hold far greater importance than anything else in the current moment. It's evident that ISRO, despite its pioneering endeavors, seems to prioritize traditional methods and overlooks the crucial aspect of public outreach. Inspiring young minds and fostering their interest in science should be a priority to nurture a scientifically inclined generation. ISRO should learn from NASA and SPACEX on how to handle Media Platforms!

Good interview 🎉. One thing you had put before the ISRO, that PR. Not as much as quality for our new generation which creates an intrest or a dream to be a part of ISRO. Our school children are to an astronaut in NASA not a vyomonaut in ISRO. Dear Somnath Sir, this is not your duty or job. Basically you are scientist you have no time to do this. But being a Director of ISRO, you should assigned someone for this. People must be aware about the achievements through your official social media handle. We have 1.4bln minds but only a few in numbers in space science, we are lagging behind becoz of poor PR and authority/ies. Please change the mindset.

You see, in space exploration there is an element of secrecy that is required,and he was doing his job in trying not to divulge state secrets for stuff in the works,which is understandable and I'm sure you would agree as well. Super proud of you to pull this interview off, and have the balls to ask those pointed questions that you did. I would just ask you to show more respect while interviewing, respond well to the answers and not just simply acknowledge with an OK and move on to the next question. I know you have the curiosity to know things so let it display through words and learn like a child does. It also encourages the interviewee to respond in a more exciting way.. also would like to ask that your tone should not be advisory and even argumentative. It was outrageous to argue with ISRO chairman on PR and outreach. I really need to say that the man deserved more respectable interviewer. Also are you interviewing as a student of science or a critic? Also, Chandrayaan 2 outreach was far better than mangalyaan, shows your views were based on your perspectives and not fact based. It makes me so furious to have you just go on arguing to the Chairman of ISRO like a child just trying to prove your point and nothing else and completely trying to impose your Social media narrative on him. this was the poorest interview I ever watched.
