Caveman makes a lot of sense, especially what he says about the problem drinkers and drug takers amongst their number. To ahow some duty of care and acceptance for these vulnerable individuals is massively important. I have heard it said the opposite of addiction is 'connectedness' The wider society can often abandon the addicted , making their disconnect worse, compounding the problem. Its ironic that there can be a better idea of community cohesiveness outside what we accept as manistream society. I have been homeless a couple of times ( just recently for four years) and I felt less isolated and alone when I had no home.

Those caves have been used for decades. The iron fencing was put over the front of the cave about 3 years ago to stop people using them. We cut them back. The place used to be glorious. Wooden stairs, guard rails and platforms. People put a lot of time into it. It's not recovered since the council destroyed it all, but it's great to see she is still keeping people warm and safe.

I was stabbed in a road rage incident and when I got out of hospital I found out the police had seized my van as it was a crime scene and I couldn't have it back until after the investigation and then the court case. My van was my livelihood as I was a self employed sparky and I lost everything and became homeless and an addict. Most addicts have been abused and have mental health issues and self medicate and being homeless makes everything 100 times harder. Most homeless people don't have a nice cave to live in, we have to sleep in shop doorways and hope we don't get attacked or urinated on when asleep. My friend was asleep and was sprayed with lighter fluid and set on fire and received 3rd degree burns. Ill start a new page.

When you're homeless and there's no end in sight and you are stuck in this living hell you can either try and end it or take something that takes the pain away for a little bit and try and get through to the next day. People should try and imagine what being homeless is really like, you are alone and without any money and no where to sleep each night and it's winter and all you have are the clothes you've been wearing for months, it's the drugs and alcohol that gets you from 1 day to the next. People can't even start to understand how difficult it is to survive from day to day on the streets and have absolutely nothing .

I work in parks and encounter homeless people frequently. I have often wondered, if I became homeless, how long I would be able to sustain my morale and some degree of agency without succumbing to alcohol. It's not hard to imagine the sense of hopelessness if one doesn't adopt the general victim blaming attitudes. Few people are prepared to live, psychologically, in reality. What's more, the parks are dangerous. How to sleep and get through the night in those circumstances; many people safely housed are medicated but of course they get a pass. A colleague + family became homeless when his landlord wanted to sell the house. In the ten years they had loved there the housing situ had continued to get even worse and they couldn't access housing without a massive advance payment or a guarantor. This guy was an actual council employee! They were put through hell for months. He visibly lost weight and his wife nearly lost her mind. Eventually they got a mouldy council flat with insufficient bedrooms but at least they are stable. Can happen to anyone with only an average wage; people don't want to face that reality. They are on a tightrope and dare not look down. Easier to blame the victims

Squatting was a great tool, because having a roof and address, even if temporarily, allowed us to hold down jobs. So I always worked, I just squatted council flats/houses/buildings with friends. We often paid electric (usually key meter was in those buildings), a few of us went to university while squatting. We had all the normal things like showers and cooking home made dinners. We always left before the legal eviction day. It was made illegal to squat residential property in 2012. The government took away a vital lifeline for homeless people. It was a pathway to work and renting. What’s worse is the council bailiffs would go in a smash the sinks, bath tubs and toilet, thus making it impossible to squat again, but leave the property just empty anyway. Such a waste and just cruel. Things have changed though, I bet there’s not many empty council homes anymore, even if squatting was legal.

But I'm so sad to hear of the things that have been taken away that could give others that opportunity. Mind, there should be ways provided by the government for those who want to help themselves out of the rut. I've been in a Peabody Trust housing association flat for over 25 years & it's in Bow London, my rent is 136 quid a week. I feel so very fortunate... how could I complain, but some are sub letting their flats & it really is taking the piss. Next door there are about 6 men all sharing a 1 bed flat & because they've n9 real ties to the place they are turning it into a r7bbish filled community garden, filthy mattresses, piles of clothes & non stop goings on in the dead of night. I don't like to report people yet 8f I don't it'll only get worse. So many apply for housing & yet stay with their big families & just use the housing as an illegal means to make money. There's a stereotype thing to it, but although all sorts do this kind of thing....in Tower Hamlets it's mostly from a certain ideology that sees this as a completely normal way to earn money & help their own while expecting others around to just keep shtum, hypocritical

It is no better in scotland. Once the council looked after the properties. A lad who works for me has black mould all over the property. The council sent painters in to cover the mould which come back rather than sort the issue. Funny thing is the lad is a decorator and told them they are wasting their time. He is now starting court proceedings as the local mp is doing nothing. We used to be able to leave our front doors and cars unlocked as I grew up. What a lovely young guy. It's just heartbreaking and absolutely dreadful that young people, and old of course, have to live like this. I helped a young guy about 12 years ago. It was near Christmas. Although I live alone and was on my own all over Christmas, I dare not invite him to come for a meal on Christmas Day. I was out of work & very poor, but I gave him my last £10, and gave him a rucksack, food, blanket, water, vouchers for free coffees in local cafes, and arranged for the Salvation Army to give him a Christmas Day and Boxing Day lunch. After Christmas, my friend was working in a charity shop, and he walked in - my help had got him a Council flat. I was SO happy as he was a lovely young guy. I'd give anything to be rich, and able to purchase a block of flats and give them to hundreds of British people who are homeless. It's so easy to become homeless, just one thing could go wrong, and wham, you're on the street. I've been penniless for years, and was on the cusp of being homeless in the late 90's. I'm nearly 65 now, and live in a tiny one bed council flat. It's full of mould, but I count myself lucky, I have a roof over my head. There for the grace of God go I.

I am part of a group who reaches out to the homeless on Friday evenings, we give food, talk to them, listen to their stories and pray for them as well as evangelise to them. They are ordinary people, humans like us who ended up on the street and now struggle to get back on their feet. They need a hand up because they won't get back into society without help. Any rent paid generally carries on to banks, council rates, insurance etc. My son when he was younger pointed out to me how rich some people were. I had to explain some economic truths to him about credit and debit..most people are only pretending to be financially wealthy while slaving away at job the don't like, and be given the sack tomorrow out of the blue. Even as someone who was homeless,with addiction issues,living in Oxford,i was still told there was no help for me. I tried for housing,but because i was sofa surfing i was deemed as someone who wasnt in need.the councils literally dont care.i wasnt even asking for free housing,i just wanted a council place so that i could afford to pay the rent with the money i earned from working,and still have enough for food!

I moved to England a few years ago for a job. Luckily I was able to stay with a friend for a few weeks, but the absolute pain in the hole it was trying to rent a house/open a bank account/get a national insurance number etc without an address was incredible, I'm not even sure how you're supposed to do it, you always needed one thing to get the other thing and just went round in circles again and again

The reality is, there is no housing crisis in the traditional sense-there is a massive issue with property banking and a lack of incentives to bring these properties back into use, whether for housing or other purposes. Property owners often hold onto these vacant properties as leverage for loans, with the property serving as equity. This system is largely driven by business rates, which are calculated based on property type, square footage, and designation (retail, office, etc.). Unfortunately, there is no incentive for owners to seek a change of use to residential, as this typically lowers the property's theoretical value, making it harder to secure financing. The problem is exacerbated by the influence of large landowners and developers, many of whom have direct ties to the government. These entities often own substantial amounts of commercial property. It raises the question: how much of this sits vacant to justify the continuous construction of new homes? ,Sadly, little (if anything) will change. We are likely to see more ugly and depressing new builds destroying small villages, while homelessness continues or even worsens. This cycle persists despite the fact that the issue is entirely solvable. If we don’t repurpose these abandoned properties and vacant commercial units, what would it cost to end homelessness? A report by Crisis, in collaboration with the Centre for Economic and Business Research (CEBR), estimated that it would cost around £10 billion over 10 years to end homelessness in the UK. This figure breaks down to approximately £1 billion per year, covering the costs of building affordable housing, providing rental assistance, and offering comprehensive support services such as mental health and addiction treatment. By contrast, the UK government currently spends around £4 billion per year on housing and supporting asylum seekers. This includes costs associated with accommodation, subsistence payments, and related services. It’s troubling to see that while we have a fixable problem for our own homeless population, we underinvest in them and overinvest in supporting new arrivals to the country. Simple economics would suggest that investing in the homeless could yield a net benefit, as many of them could contribute to the economy through work. Meanwhile, asylum seekers, who are often not allowed to work, do not provide the same immediate economic return. When we consider the need to boost GDP per capita, addressing homelessness by repurposing vacant properties seems like an obvious solution.

When I visit 'nice' areas, I depress myself by seeing how many houses have key safes on the wall. I'm quite old, in my lifetime I've seen quite a few places turn from communities to holiday destinations that are deserted in winter. I'm sure half of Cornwall is empty from November to April. I think there is a housing distribution crisis as well as the problems you, rightly, highlight.

I was homless for 2 years the way i managed to get help with no address was i put the jobcenters address down as a care of address that way i could open a bank account and start a claim for UC i now have my own place and im in work all be it an agency but i can still feel that cold in my bones help is there its hard to find but if you keep looking you can find it!

​​​@@calumstpauliyea you *can* but without a bank account where is UC going to send the money? They don't just hand out cash in Jobcentres! At least a few years ago (which is all I can speak to) you could use the Jobcentre as the address for a claim but they would often schedule and reschedule appointments at short notice and essentially send a letter to themselves in this case to let you know - and then sanction you for not turning up to appointments you didn't know you had. My brother once walked for three hours in shoes that fell apart in winter to a jobcentre appointment to be told when he got there they had rescheduled it for the day before. (He was out in the countryside in a tent because he didn't feel safe on the street in the city) in the four or five months he lived like that I think he managed to claim a total of two weeks jobseekers - so like £140? (Fortunately he already had a bank account, though if hed needed a new bank card for instance he'd have been stuck) The only reason he got out of that situation was because family members found out where he was and that he needed help, alot of people don't have that advantage (and apparently he didn't think he did either).

Our big cities in The States are going through the same thing. We have RV (Caravan) dwellers and van dwellers living in the Federal Bureau of Land Mgmt land and State and National Parks as well as park-ups in our cities, our beaches and our mountains but we don't have any caves dwellers that I know of. Most Americans and now I'm finding out many British are like 2 paychecks away from devastation. I'm 60, currently I live with my mother who has Dementia, I'm her sole caregiver but when she is gone, the house gets divided up and I'm going to be without a home, so I am getting ready now with a slide in truck camper and getting it ready to live in. I'm making it part of my plan because I'm not going to be able to afford sticks and bricks off a Federal Retirement.

I left the UK 26 years ago and now live in Australia. We have the same issues here. People living on the streets. Under bridges, in tents and cars. Housing everywhere has become a luxury commodity. Brisbane council the other day feeling really charitable slapped 48 hour eviction notices on the tents in the city parks. Then came back after two days and pulled all the tents down and disposed of them. They aren't offering an alternative, just cleaning house.

That cave has been used to "live" in for years... I started popping in there over 15 years ago and some students were staying there over the summer.... its a very on and off habitat, most people not staying as a permanent thing... It may be now more used... I admit the sink is new and there are a better selection of pots and pans... but there was always some stuff around for cooking. Also the balcony seating and railing is much safer now! In the rain its pretty slippery getting there and would not be fun through the worst of winter!

England is the 2nd most densely populated country in Europe after Netherlands except we don't have a continent to over flow to, we have scotland and wales. Average acre per person in Europe is 3.5 but in england we have 0.5 acres per person and UK as a whole is 0.8. We are massively overpopulated.

@@Baud2Bits who said anything about people on boats? 1.2million came last year and they weren't on boats. over 1million Chinese in the country with the lowest employment rate of any migrant at 52% and of that 52% around 320k are "employed" as landlords making up 10% of uk landlords which is a 100% increase from the 5%in 2020 so we've just flown in a load of landlords. The 900k acres you talk about is pretty much all farmland and although yes it shit its in the hands of just a few people it's still where our food is grown. We should have about 2.4 people to a dwelling as guide so to meet that standard with current population we would need about 6million more homes built. if we were to build 300k homes a year and kept up migration levels to what it is now it would take 50 years to catch up while also building over the limited countryside we have and last year we built 180k. around 1/5 people in UK are migrants so around 20% yet they only make up 9% of construction workers so not even pulling weight on building the housing we need to accommodate these extra people arriving by boat or plane. Just because I don't agree with mass migration doesnt mean I hate people or that I think other races are inferior I just look at the number and see that what we are doing is not the answer. We need to make the rest of the world a better place to live and not expect everyone to just come here. The cost of housing is high because that how supply and demand work.

That being said I'm aware we do need to be building more my point is whats being sacrificed in the process. Do you want to live in complete concrete? Should we sacrifice wildlife and nature? Should we sacrifice space to expand for future generations? How long do you think it takes to build the housing we currently need without even considering what will be needed if migration levels stay at 1million plus? Do you think we just click our fingers and houses appear along with all utilities, sewage treatment, roads, schools, hospitals etc. Climate goals still needing to be met yet we are only 40% renewable energy for current energy needs. The infrastructure we have at the moment has taken 100s of years to accomplish yet we still need maybe 20% more than we already have. I'm not against controlled migration but the numbers we are seeing now is just not sustainable and its coming at the cost of the bottom part of society that are already here like the gentleman in the video. Fix the problems we already have before inviting even more people to add to it. And having people coming who we have no social benefit from like the example I gave with the Chinese needs to discussed sensibly. We don't need more landlords, we don't need more amazon workers and uber drivers. Only migrants from within the EU have employment rates above the national average meaning around 40% from outside are helping in no way whatsoever.

I lived in Bristol in 2005 and it was a vibrant beautiful place, it had its problems but nothing compared to now. I know businesses who have left due to being vandalised and broken in to 3 times in a 6 month period.

He explained the banks and charities spot on, and was well informed. It is the same here in Denmark, if you don't have an address (you're homeless/NFA) you can't get a bank account. The banks show their real ugly face on this issue. There should at least be *one* bank where it was possible. Best of luck!

I remember visiting a friend in Christiania in the early 80s. Don't know if it's still around, but it was shocking to me then to see that. Compared to how many homeless must live now in the UK, it was an eye-opener back then.

@@drumstick74 I had grown up in the US in the 50s/60s and never encountered such a space in a big city like Copenhagen, where such a large area was 'given over' to a commune movement. Well, not handed over, they occupied the former military barracks site and it 'grew' until the gov't found it cheaper to let them have it than provide any social housing. I had a friend there whose husband deserted her and his son. Without Christiania, she would have been homeless. They had a creche and kindergarten which I visited several times when I stayed there. A cooperative food store, and a bike and baby pram 'garage; where you could borrow them when needed for going 'outside'. Several other things I'd have to go back into my slides to find. She did warn me not to take photos in certain areas as the police never ever went in there. It was an eye opener.... in a good way, warts and all. I didn't know if it was still there in its original form. It was certainly fulfilling a need for her there.
