im someone born and raised south side of Chicago, the way crime works in this city is unique in how segmented some towns known for gang violence can be. You can live in a relatively nice neighborhood and not 2 blocks away theres a town known for being one of the most dangerous towns to live in within America. But theres a sense that the crime in that town usually stays in that town, since that’s how it’s usually always been. Police ignore that certain area and let the gang members kind of relax there (not unpunished but almost definitely enabled to a degree), and in return the gang stays within their territory, leaving the surrounding towns mostly unbothered. The fact that gang violence is starting to become more and more common outside of their borders is a big concern, and is telling of the local economy. I dont have any plans on moving out of the Chicagoland area anytime soon (cant really afford it at this time) but its definitely something to keep mind of.

Well "smart criminals" don't commit petty crimes, and are smart enough to get away with big money schemes and heists. "Gangsters" and thugs, are by nature not the brightest. But also lack the support system and parental guidance to make smart choices, or fell the need to find "family" or support in the streets. There's a difference in being brave, tough and having balls. An facing fears etc, an doing something noble with your life and time. However stupidity, low IQ and mental illness / clinically insane or "craziness." Can also come off as "tough" or fearless, but there's definitely a difference between stupid and brave or fearless. That along with a general desensitization, lack of any self worth or value, no guidance or direction. An no sense of any real hope, together with a low IQ can kind of come off the same way. They want to feel like important or like they somebody, so in a gang they can feel as though they're apart of something or as though they're a leader etc.

i'm a sociology minor in university and one thing that I've studied a lot is gang violence, specifically in LA (mostly just MS-13) and Chicago. o-block isn't so much gang affiliated as it is impoverished, and people in poverty will sometimes go to extreme lengths to earn money for themselves and their families. the majority of the violence and gang activity in o-block (at least from what I've read and discussed in classes) is from when people are doing business with gang members/have debts to pay/etc., not that they're necessarily in gangs themselves. two of the main reasons that these kids join gangs are for protection or because they think that they can make money. if you're a loner in the streets/in school (most join around the of 13), you're more likely to be targeted by gangs, so young people join gangs so that they can have someone watching their back. as for making money, the profits from being in a gang don't usually go very far or last very long. in my opinion, the most effective solution to gang violence is providing opportunities to those that have nothing. for the most part, someone is not going to choose to live a life of violence and poverty. if given the opportunity, they will finish their education and try for a well-paying job. the issue with education is that they KNOW that they have no opportunities for jobs, so what's the point in trying? educational programs and after-school programs (to keep kids off the streets after school) would be effective, as well as counseling for their futures. it's so extremely sad because the majority of these kids have PTSD, anxiety, etc. because of what they're going through and how they've grown up, and they don't have the resources (for the most part!!!!) to create a real life for themselves. they need to be believed in and supported, just like any other kids, in order to be successful.

I've lived in Chicago my whole life ( northwest side ) and have never seen much violence. I used to take the train downtown every week for shopping and would walk around even at 10 pm. Now, after Covid, the city changed. Now they are robbing, car jacking and shooting even in the good neighborhoods and downtown. I haven't been downtown in 4 years. Now i live on the border of Chicago and the suburbs ( close to OHare ). It's mostly safe and quiet here but stuff still happens around here. Thats why i mostly stay home and go to work. Being from here your head has to constantly be on a swivel.

These are generational problems. Kids grow up to see friends and family members get killed. They grow up hating the other side since a young age. They don’t know anything else. Parents are involved in all this beef and have no direction. Some of these guys never even get to see more than a few miles outside of their neighborhood. It’s sad really and I’m not sure what the answer is. Growing up in Chicago in the streets I can confidently say. This has a good chance of never being resolved. At least not for decades.

BS. As a Chicagoan born and raised, it's nothing like the media portrays. I've grown up in the safer North, but I have friends from Englewood and even some who are homeless. It sucks for them for sure, but they are great people and are totally normal. My friend from Englewood hasn't even heard gunshots since he was a little kid. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk lol. Seriously though, Chicago's portrayal in the media is really mostly just the people behind the content trying to get you to watch the videos/shows by making it seem worse than it is. To be clear though, those who apparently don't feel safe downtown and whatever tend to be from out of town, since I have felt completely safe being a teenager walking down the street alone at 5:30pm... it's just that the amount of people out there with you minding their own business gives you a sense of security. Anyways that's just my experience. Edit: Forgot to mention that while the stuff in the video is real and happens, it is not nearly as common and widespread as it is shown as being. Also, what the woman said about being groped and slapped is also completely unacceptable, and nobody doing anything is just what society seems to have come to these days; just do nothing, or film it for clout.

This is just how it is here in Chicago. If the kid doesn’t get forced. He will grow up seeing those around him get killed by the opposition. So he will grow up with hatred for them and join anyways. People come from families that are all gang members. Brothers, sisters, mom, and dad. I was also in the same streets where the Hispanic gangs were interviewed. Thankfully I got my head on straight before doing something that would change my life forever. I don’t see it ending anytime soon or ever. A never ending cycle.

My uncle lived in chicago and died of a fet overdose. He wasn’t a major druggie, but his boyfriend got him into it. His boyfriend was fucking crazy and i hate him with all my heart, i feel like my uncle had a “savior” complex and felt he could help him. I miss my uncle every day. edit: yes, my uncles gay. i also wanna add, i talked to my mom yesterday about him. She told me he had a note taped to his wall. “If I die, I don’t want to be my nephews junkie uncle” plus some other stuff, mostly dedicated to other people. Obviously the wording was different but i’m not gonna use my name. It kinda just broke me hearing that. I loved him so much, he was a very humble and smart guy. He had a masters from harvard, liked photography, rocks (i have a beautiful bismuth from him), biking. When my dad went down to clear out his apartment they also found sticky notes where he tested if his sht had fet in it or not. I don’t know how it works, nor do i care, but it was just something i wanna add. My mom told me one time he was over, and had placed down his camera (really expensive one, from what i assume) and i went to go touch it. I was in around 1st grade? idk. He freaked out over it, totally out of character. He loved that thing. But otherwise he was a calm, humble guy. My other uncle, his brother is a smart guy too (also, pretty funny, he’s also gay) but he’s always been what my mom describes as “someone you need to act a certain way around”. My mom told me my uncle (deceased) was never somebody she had to worry about that with. She told me he was over once and they both cried together, because my mom was talking to him, about his husband. “I understand you want to help him and leaving him when he’s sick is difficult, but you need to realize people who love you don’t hurt you, he’s with you because you feed his addiction.” Sorry if my writings messy.

Seeing videos like this make me happy knowing that I grew up in a middle class privileged life that my parent’s worked their asses off for. It makes me respect them and love them even more cause they truly did do everything for us even if they had to make sacrifices.

Cause of death announced March 15th 2023 as “drowning with ethanol intoxication as a contributing factor” and determined to be an accident ( versus foul play) Had he lived, Krzysztof would have been 23 years old today - Sunday March 20th. @Froze82 I remember Krzysztof’s case as his was one of several or many young men who were found drowned in that area of Lake Michigan often after having spent the evening drinking at nearby bars or restaurants. Some have theorized it’s the work of a serial killer some label the “smiley face killer” ( a lot of bodies were said to have a smiley face graffiti nearby but Chicago Police seem to have dismissed that by claiming the smiley face is simply a very commonly-found piece of graffiti and people are overthinking it.). It’s sad Krzysztof Szubert lost his life at such a young age. R.I.P.
