Thank you so much! I never knew what the Roman numerals meant. You explained it so clearly. Someone told me that someone had once asked Earl Scruggs how much music theory he knew. His reply: "not enough to hurt my playing." 😂

I guess that I am with Earl Scruggs. I know nothing of music theory. I don't want any music theory to confuse my learning to play the Ukulele. (I have been learning ukulele self taught with help from KZbin tutorials for 18 months). Since I am not trying to get an academic degree in music, I don't think I need to know this. I do notice the recurring patterns in music.

They are SO useful!! Bluegrass is all about the I IV V chord, so I'm willing to bet Earl Scruggs 100% knew what a "One four five" chord progression was." That's pretty much all you need! Yeah you don't have to go overboard with the music theory, but knowing a little bit can be so powerful. Cheers!

Hi Phyllis, awesome that you're learning ukulele - sounds like you are enjoying it! To each her own, you can totally enjoy learning songs on the ukulele just as you are! Knowing a bit of music theory can also be very empowering and in my experience as a teacher it opens up more avenues for creativity and freedom. Those patterns you are noticing are a part of music theory - perhaps one day you'll change your mind and be ready to explore further! Cheers 🎵😊 @@phyllismorris94

@phyllismorris94 Just for fun - Here's an interesting banjo forum discussion I found, discussing Earl Scruggs and his music theory knowledge - "Earl knew a lot of music theory. Practical theory, not scholarly theory. He knew which chords went together, could play in any key...he probably didn't know why, but lots of people who study a bit of theory don't know either. He didn't have a PhD, but did have a working knowledge of music theory. And used it quite well. Whether he admitted it or not." www.banjohangout.org/archive/363217
