Regarding the 3 heater controls in the centre console: 1) The hot/cold lever opens/closes the heater valve. If only cold air comes out, maybe your heater core is blocked or the cable operating the valve is broken or disconnected. 2) The more/less lever opens an air-flap behind the heater core. You need to put this in the "more" end (nearer the centre) for more warm air. 3) The up/down lever directs the air towards the windscreen AND those little side-window vents or down to the two footwell vents under the dashboard or a combination. In each dashboard vent, there are 3 levers, too: 1) The top horizontal lever is more/less fresh air through that side dashboard vent, 2) The bottom horizontal lever is more/less warmed or fresh air to the footwell vent (The left-side also sends air to the rear footwell), and 3) The tiny vertical lever operates the louvres to direct the main dashboard vent air up or down. I always keep it down so that bugs and dust don't get blown into your eyes. For normal driving with heating, I have the centre up/down lever to 'down' and the dash-vent footwell vent open. Your DSuper also has a thermostat on the heater so, if it's a hot day, it won't heat the air much more than it is now. In any case, the engine bay gets so hot that even fresh-air is incredibly hot on a hot day.

So there is no way for warm air to come out the main big vents. I do get warm air, but only to window and side vent… and I’m not sure about if it warms the footwell

The left vent is fed from the same fender duct as the heater box. The air flow splits within the heater / fan box. The center controls have an open-close lever, a warm(ish)-cold lever, and an up-down lever (defrost up floor down). The dash vent and heater ducting compete with one another for air coming through that duct from the nose of the car. And whatever manages to get through the filter screen in it. To get the most out of the defrost snd floor vents you have to close the dash vent, both sections and be sure the lever in the heater control grouping is showing fully open. Having said that, it’s modest heat. Except in summer. Then there’s a LOT of heat, even through the fresh air vents! It’s worth checking out replacing the cardboard inlet ducts because they do deteriorate and lose insulating value from engine compartment heat. I don’t know what it is with French heaters prior to the mid 1970s. My Peugeot 504 was just as wimpy in the heating department as the D. The 604 and 505 were excellent though. I hear the CX was better too.

re the 'catching fire' I have been told to wire up the fuel inlet to the carburetor because they are prone to break at the carburetor and that causes fuel to be sprayed across and over the exhaust, which does cause fires. You wire it to the carby so that if it breaks the fuel doesn't spray everywhere.

Yes. Wiring it in place will prevent catastrophe. That’s the first thing to check! Weber only pressed the brass inlet tube in place and will loosen up. I don’t think the solex carbs had that problem. I’ve had a couple DS with that carburetor and sure enough one came loose with a firm tug and another almost fell out! I reinstalled with X-pando, tapping back in place and wiring it securely. Never had one come out after that.

If the heater doesn't work well, is the engine warming up properly? Faulty coolant thermostat perhaps?

Hey thats great. I have exaclty the same model, same year and same colour. Funny though, mine has the chrome window winders and inside door handles. Mine requires full resto of which I am halfway through. I am going to paint it Blue Lagoon colour. I just prefer it a bit more than the Blue Danube. Interestingly your column shift logo on the dash shows 5 gears. Is that right? Mine is a 4 speed and I'm sure that D Supers of 1970 were only ever 4 speeds. Maybe yours has received a 5 speed box. If so you have done very well. I'm keen to follow your further posts. BTW I'm in Australia, so original vinyl seats have been destroyed by the sun and need complete recovering.

Thanks for the comment! It’s a d super, but was given a 5 speed as an optional extra, along with swivel lights and a matching roof

EFI DS's don't catch fire more than carb's... it's poor maintenance which will be the cause. With the right maintenance, a DS or ID will run forever.

Hi James. What color blue is it? Would it be Blue Danube? And what model is it? A D Super or D Special? I looks really nice
