It wasn’t scrapped or cut out, it was just downplayed so it’s not super clear, but the hints are still there where you can tell there’s something more going on. Don’t forget when we all first watched the movie as kids, we felt there was something going on with Jason and Kimberly. That’s exactly the feeling the writers and director wanted to create.

Honestly, I always shipped Kimberly with Tommy, and not with Jason. Because if Kimberly moved on to be with Jason, there's a possible chance that the former Red and Green Rangers might not be friends anymore.

If you watch the original show, before Tommy comes in Jason is already smitten by Kimberly, so technically he was already there, but Tommy came in with his douchbaggery which caught Kim’s attention so Jason obviously never made a move. Because he had Kim’s best interest at heart.
