This is NOT the right way to pick a pineapple. Always pick the most yellowed looking one. She pointed out that it might be over ripe and might be fermented inside. That's not true. Look around the body to make sure nowhere on it is crushed. Then press on it all the way around to make sure there are no soft areas. If there are then the pineapple is becoming bad inside. Also look for the little spike on each seed/sections especially the bottom half parts. The sweet and ripe ones has red color on the bottom of each section. That means it's the perfect one. Also give it a sniff test, it should have sweet fragrance. ignore the top section of the crown, it has nothing to do with how sweet it is. Some are small and some are big, but they are only important for anyone who wants to break it off to replant it.
It all depends on how soon you want to eat the pineapple. If straight away, buy a yellow one but, as mentioned, make sure it's not yet overripe; if in a day or so, buy one that's half-green, leave it in the open (don't put it in the fridge!) and wait until it has fully turned yellow, and if even later, buy a mostly green one and, again, wait until it has fully turned yellow.

En mi pais la piña amarilla osea decimos la más madura se utiliza para hacer piña calada se pela pica cuadritos pequeños y azúcar al gusto se hierve sin agua primero a fuego lento que suelte jugo si acaso un poquito de agua y de último azúcar para poder revolver

En mi país Colombia es la variedad de piña la que se amarillea no dura mucho no recuerdo nombre la otra verde al pelarla diferentes sus trozos su contenido un poco más duro no es tan dulce y uno la conoce por el revestimiento de la piña

The best i can get in supermarket is all yellow skin and usually only half bottom part is sweet
