My thought is that SMB2 was originally going to be added, but then the pandemic hit and they chose to cut it down to an item due to man power and because it wasn't as important as finishing new games that year.

I kinda need Mario Maker 3 at least on the new gen console, with either more game styles, new stuff (mechanics, blocks, ...) more "cameo" power-ups (like the Link one; it could be smth like Samus with missiles, superjumps and ball, or Yoshi from Yoshi's Island with the egg throw and all), or new ones (wonder power-ups, or completely original ones like builder Mario). Or simply the 3d maker idea. And expanding on the super worlds could lead to cool things too. I'm glad with anything, but it would be cool to see things like that.

That was simply what's called a PROVISION,, for just IN CASE they in the future added more styles. Instead, they decided to cease adding to SMM2 before anything else was added, probably getting ready for whatever SMM3 will be. But everyone took that "S" at the end of the word, and just ran with it.

1st off I am still currently obsessed with beating courses in Mario Maker 2 anywhere I go. In fact I have a separate yellow Switch Lite only for that game cause I love the real D pad. It’s magical. 50,400 beat so far. Mario Maker 3D does have a nice ring to it and hope it comes on Super Switch but please Nintendo, throw us faithful Maker 2 players a bone and just give us 1 last DLC with more enemies and Yoshi colours to use and a more in depth leaderboard to get people back into the beauty and endless play of this game;)

Mario vs Donkey Kong style in Mario Maker ? That would be dumb, and you know why ? Because the original Mario vs Donkey Kong game on GBA had a scrapped level editor that a proper remake would have reimplemented. Well a proper remake also wouldn't have removed so many things like that remake did, but that's beside the point. Anyway but this Mario vs Donkey Kong remake didn't reimplement the scrapped level editor. So if they added it to Mario Maker instead of to the game that was meant to have a level editor in the original initially would be kinda stupid.

Everyone is just overreacting imo. There's really no second style. If you look at the text for the Game Styles, you'll realize that there's an S in "Extra Game Styles" but none in "Game Style". My theory is that a dev accidentally placed an S in the "Extra Game Styles" segment instead of "Game Style" segment, but no one at Nintendo noticed as it's so tiny.

I thought you were bringing up MM2 extra game styles again after all this time has passed because you found some new evidence, but instead your just having wild unreasonable day dreams. No I don't believe there was EVER any chance of a 3D maker. When even 3DLand was a 2D course maker that ought to tell you that's out of the question. A 3D maker would take a completely different game engine and course designing tools to accommodate the Z axis. It wasn't that whatever it was. I think the most rational thing to believe is they had SMB2 originally planned as its own style, with a vast array of different enemies that wouldn't equate one to one with the other styles, so it needed to be an extra course. But they ran short on time partway through development and settled on just making it power up in SMB1. If other extra styles were planned they were probably other things we got only as a DLC power up like a 2D sidescroller Zelda maker, which also got scrapped for time when the finished making the player mechanics, but had no time to make Zelda castle original tiles or enimes or bosses. The fact that Link gets its own tag in the very limited search tools suggest they planned on this being a radically different kind of course mode. I don't think they had any other extra styles planned. Unless the Superball flower was a late dlc free update, but I'm pretty sure it was in the base game.
