Went to a card show last weekend after being out of the hobby for about 20 years. It was overwhelming to say the least. I had no idea what I was looking at and when I was collecting it was way more about fun than money. Now it seems like the complete opposite. Now everything is graded and I even saw little kids everywhere carrying suitcases full of cards. The hobby has definitely changed.

Pretty sure that Lebron UD All Time Greats isn’t a dual auto. There were a few guys and variations of those Personal Touch cards where guys on the checklist just wrote in their response to “favorite artist” or “favorite track” (for Richard Petty) or “favorite food” or “favorite car”, “favorite moment” so if you payed up thinking it also has a Jay-Z auto… Add it to the took a bath list

Also there is zero chance this guy had a 26k offer in cash because that is way better than the trade plus cash deal he just did by at least 2-3k. He got 20k in cards and those are probably liquid at 17-18k bringing total to 25k, plus a big risk with the Zion as well. I bought a Kobe topps psa 10 for $35 maybe a year before the pandemic happened. It’s hard for me to comprehend the “hobby” now and the crazy prices people pay. You might as well just flip classic cars for those prices. At least you can drive the car and pick up chicks if you can’t sell it right away.

I pulled that card in July 1997 when I was a kid. It was worth like $500 for 20 years. I sold it for $500 in 2011. 😢 it was a PSA 9 OC. Not PSA 10.

Furthermore, the “sunk cost” fallacy only applies if you are dumping money into the same thing. Those cards you traded are not a sunk cost because they don’t require any more money to own them. UNLESS you are saying your collection is a sunk cost, then you should stop investing in cards all together.

Dealers are paying for their dealer booth and travel expenses to be there, so they are looking to make profit on every deal. Therefore if it’s a trade they generally want some extra premium since they aren’t getting cash to cover their costs.
