I have brain cancer and came to add something to my musical house. We’ll have everything but drums.My dad went to high school with Michael McDonald, but Warren G and Nate Dogg definitely made this their own. I’ll keep you posted.

I just bought a stage piano, and this song is one of the motivations. Thanks for great lesson. Love that you name the chords instead of just showing the shape or pattern. Helps for we newbies to learn music. You bet I subscribed man. Thanks again.

Brother, when you refer to the "white" keys at 5:40, you don't have to be apologetic. White keys are white keys, black keys are black keys. They have lived together on the keyboard since the 18th century - sometimes harmonious and sometimes dissonant. Altogether they create works of art. As should we. I gotta agree with you that McDonald has soul pipes, as good as Pete Riviera from Rare Earth or Terry Kath from early Chicago.

I’m 61, had a keyboard for a couple of years and just worked my way through the first part, it’s rough, but I do enjoyed that, Thank You so much for putting this up, I may never play it like Michael or you, but I think with a ton of work I can get where someone could recognize it, maybe Thank You for sharing your talent to play and teach!

Great tutorial. If you ever doubt your teaching style-- like how you repeat things or slow things down sometimes-- don't. This was really helpful. I'd personally find it nice if you'd do more arpeggios when demonstrating the chords. Those stick in my head when attempting to break down the chords and really hear their components. This was the first of your videos I've ever come across. Can't wait to watch more.

I adapted this for guitar. It was relatively easy; 1st time I'm trying out the song. Give me a week, I'll have it down. There are some chords I hear in the "never be the same again" part, some augmenteds that translate easier for piano. I'll figure out all these progressions in time. Thank you very much for your lesson. Much appreciated.

The music was written by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. They had a string of hits, one of their most famous was "Hound Dog". This arrangement, suits Michael McDonald's voice beautifully. For years I have wanted to learn the chords, and in particular the very distinctive progression in the chorus.

Nice lesson. Is it fair to just call the C/D chord ("C over D" chord) in the B section a D dominant chord (D11 or D9)...since it's a II-V-I in G major. Just from this guitar players perspective. Thanks again for the great tutorial.
@houseofjaz7 жыл бұрын
I don't know how to play guitar at all. I just call them out from a keyboard player's perspective. I tend t play C/D sometimes as a Am7/D. It can also be called a D7 (sus2) (sus4). I don't know, whatever works for you I guess LOL!
@donaldburnside45367 жыл бұрын
houseofjaz appreciate the reply. Trust me, I'm self taught so I'll go with your naming over mine. But I guess the sus2/sus4 is where I'm getting the 9/11 from. Whenever I want to really learn a song I go to a keyboard lesson. So many guitarists don't have the chord knowledge. Thanks again.
@georgewallace49396 жыл бұрын
as a self taught keyboard player who started on drums and melodic percussion (vibes, chimes, xylophone, etc. and still can't read bass clef), I've noticed guitarists tend to speak a different language. They think in terms more of root notes and dominants and the sus 2 sus 4, slash chord stuff. After the Beatles and everybody got a guitar for Christmas, we have to speak their language. : )

Love your bass intro with that off beat rhythm, badass. That's so true, great tune, great chords, thanks, but i was singing this in my head then looked it up and saw he's a white guy! I will say, Regulate makes the tune all that much cooler--I guess too since I was too young for the original, Regulate gives it context for my age even though the two songs are completely different lyrics. i will stop rambling now.
