Mr. Prick was mad that his friend got his girl taken from him back in high school. Friend became hypnotist, hypnotized to-be-dad to dig holes because Mr. Prick told him to when Mr. Prick tried to kill to-be-dad with a knife 10 years prier and failed. I'm guessing when to-be-dad told Mr. Hypnotist that his wife left, he then hypnotized him to hide from his wife if she ever came back to the house. Reason why the white van (Mr. P and Mr. H) arrived To-be-dad came out to talk to them. When Mr. Prick instructed her to leave house and escape from the Bad Guys, it was really them. Mr. Prick tricked the wife into a lie to basically dig her own grave then killed Mr. Hypnotist (old friend) so there wasn't any loose ends. It took me a bit to figure it out because the McDonald's scene threw me off of "he said/she said".

When I was a kid, back in high school, a friend of mine did start digging holes in his back yard, or I should say one very deep hole. He did it all through one summer, digging at night and sleeping during the day. Then the next summer, he did the same thing, then he just stopped. Never said why never seemed to know why and that was that. We all took to calling it the Pit of Uselessness and, at one point, it filled with rain and was like a massive rain puddle. It was odd but, as far as I know, nothing supernatural or anything like that. I do remember one night sitting and watching him for an hour or two before going home. We listened to music and talked all the time he was digging that one night.

What nobody knows is that the original ending is slightly different, it goes like this: "So why did I do it? Because last Christmas, he gave you his heart but the very next day, you gave it away." And the working title was "What happens years after that annoying 'One year later, that dude still didn't get over being rejected' song". Meh, I dunno. Maybe it'd have been not that bad if the twist wasn't given away with the "he didn't even recognize me!" line followed by the condescending talk about the wife. Maybe it'd also have been better if the motivation wasn't so thin. Years together, engaged, then breaking up, yeah, I'd get when the ex had a hard time dealing with that. But she didn't see it go anywhere with that Felix guy after just a few dates and that was sooo traumatic, it fucked two guys up? Liked the idea of telling the story from three perspectives, though. Worked well for the first two. The writing in itself wasn't bad either and could have been even stronger if the three narrative voices differed more from each other.
