Video is great, a lot more than you would expect from a somewhat new channel. Great stuff!

Really good video, it is good to see someone actually monitor the progress of the colony instead of just short term “unboxing - move cycle” very entertaining and I live surrounded by Messor barbarus in Spain so really good job

Great update! I think i remember one of your older messors in a set up thst was premade clay like tunnels in a container in the lower half and outworld was the space above. Love your videos ❤️🐜🐜🐜

Thanks Sadie,that nest was one of the best nests i ve ever made for sure, shoulda used gravel in the bottom not sand but lesson learnt, it worked a treat. may have to make another if they keep growing at this rate. sooo fun though

Messor barbarus are so tricky sometimes, dying for basically no reason. I started with eight, and after four months, only one queen has developed a small, ten worker colony. Two others remain without brood, the rest died unexpectedly.

I have a couple questions, firstly how do you hibernate them, I’ve heard you just leave them as they hibernate at room temperature? Secondly my Messor colony, almost one year old +40 workers Messor Barbarus colony’s queen stopped laying eggs, is this because of daily checkups, time of year, or temperature, it is around ~22-23c in my room, which I have turned the radiator off in to prepare my ants for hibernation before I put them in my mini fridge.

I have a question, what happens if you keep a small species and it grows massive in a year and you don't have the space for it or for whatever reason it's just too much what do you do with them? I know if it's a native species to your area you can release them but what if it's not?
@gameburrito25023 ай бұрын
I got these recently, can I ask why you gave away your old big colonies of these? did they get too big? just want to know what to expect
@Antymatters3 ай бұрын
Well 1st colony was just because I had 2 so gave one to my mate ramblings to enjoy.second colony were doing great but I saw Midland ants ha some trouble with her ants so decided she could take the second colony, they'd also have the chance of being used for ant education which seemed a great cause. If it wasn't for the education I would of kept them but it seemed worth it to spread the ant love.

Wich nest do you think is best for messor barbarus?
@Antymatters3 ай бұрын
tbh shop wise i don't really think theres any good nests when compared to diy nests for these. by far the best setup in my experience is a plaster nest in a spaghetti container. put a few bits of fine gravel at the bottom to act as a hydration layer, then pour a quite stiff /thick mix of plaster to fill 3/4 of the container and allow to dry. once its hard slip the plaster out the container and carve what you like. some larger chambers near the surface for seeds and cozy chambers near the bottom for brood is reccomended. clay can also be used to restrict acsess temporarily till its required. theyl dig through it to open new areas. once its all carcved back into the spagetti container its goes. maybe drill a expansion hole up top and a small hydration hole nr the bottom to. makes everything easier longrun. lemme find an exmaple

@@Antymatters thanks for the information. But do you think title grout or ytong also is good?
@Antymatters3 ай бұрын
@@TheSwedishAntChannel ytong is deffinetly okay, not sure about tile grout, if its porous it would work though i suspect. aslong as its not got any nasty chemicals in it.
