The tropic marin hydrometer glass float is perfect. No calibration. 77 degrees is all it wants. Highly recommend!

Get the Tropic Marin glass hydrometer. The refractometer or digital devices are secondary. I like the Hanna pen for convenience, but I always double check its accuracy against the glass hydrometer at each water change.

If you get the tropic marine floating hydrometer you will never need calibration fluid again . Coming in at a whopping 14 inches it is quite fragile , but deadly accurate 😊

The glass hydrometer is the absolute best for Salinity. I ended up selling all my electronic testers. They are way off.

I will be switching to glass hydrometer as well

I was just going to say the same thing. I had issues and even calibration solutions from different makers were all different. Now I calibrate my refractometer using water checked with my glass hydrometer. Hands down the best!

It’s funny how you often your videos relate to my current experience! This same thing just happened to me a few weeks ago. My salinity got all the way up to 1.033. Lost a couple corals lost a couple fish, but I’ve slowly brought the salinity back down to 1.026 and everything is starting to bounce back to life. Double checking your test results is very important. Looks like we both learned that lesson the hard way.

I had the same thing too and was the icp that pointed me in the direction of a salinity issue. Mine was also the hanna checker that was out even after calibrating it frequently. I also found calibrating my refractometer with 0 tds ro wasn't accurate enough. It was only after buying 35ppt refractometer solution and recalibrating it matched the icp.

i use a hannah pen for match salinty for water changes only. mine is always off by 2 points, even directly after calibration with Hannah's solution, but is consistent.

Calibrating Hydrometers with RO/DI isn't right, as this will give you always off readings (0.0013-0.0016 S.G.). Also using a refractometer I'll recommend something like D-D/H2Ocean or even RS aren't bad as well. The reason is: the cheap chinese test for SALT (not SW salinity) or NaCl. Seeing this isn't completely accurate as in the salt water you;ll have to think about the rest of the chemicals which also add to the salinity as well. But using a not exactly NaCl solution to calibrate the cheap refractometers still works (only if you don't go far away with the Mg or the Alk, which will give you false readings again). Don't remember your calibration solutions are based on NaCl or proper SW mixtures. But like nearly all of the other comments say, the Hydrometers are the best. The TMC ones (have 4 of them bought over the years) are always spot on. With the exception if the temp of the water is more than 1.6degC, then you'll have to recalculate +/- 0.0001 - 0.00014. Personally throw away more than 7-8 digital devices, nearly always giving me a headeks, but calibrating my Refractometers (once a week or 2) using the Hydrometer always gives me a spot on readings.

That Hanna salinity tester wouldn’t hold calibration more than a day for me. Got rid of it real quick. Went to the Hanna glass hydrometer with a 1 liter beaker. Much better and simple.

I clean my hanna after every use and recalibrate once a month i dubble check with my glass hydrometer and its always ben spot on. I feel like anything electronic if you don't maintenance or calibrate constantly it won't work properly

in talking to other reefers, its amazing to me how many people don't have calibration fluid for their refractometers. the hanna checker is garbage and constantly needs to be calibrated. the shitty amazon refractometer has never let me down.

If my salinity is low, how would you bump it up safely ? From 1.025 to 1.026 ?
