So regarding Roger, the ghoul turning feral, what I believe is going on is that he was a pre-war ghoul like Howard (ice cream and apple pie aren't post war things you'll find, and there are many, many pre-war ghouls thanks to all that radiation) and the "28 years since I first started showing" is in reference to him turning feral. Characters in the games have never been that close to turning, so the drug being absent is more understandable. If you aren't in the late stages of the condition, you don't need it, presumably.

Despite all it's flaws, Fallout 4 always deeply impressed me with the pre-war intro scene. Nothing in Fallout had depicted that time as it happened, so it was the first taste we had of witnessing the outbreak of the Great War. The show's opening scene completely blows it out of the water in every way, especially since our PoV character and his daughter DON'T make it to safety at the last minute like the Sole Survivor and his family. More tension in the active denial of the war beforehand, much larger scale of the destruction, the knowledge that these two lived through the War and had to survive in the aftermath, and the terrible ambiguity of not knowing what happened to them in the intervening years.
@stevenbanks154817 күн бұрын
The one thing the show did best in my humble opinion was nail the tone of the Bethesda and obsidian games. They nailed it so well that without playing the games or being familiar with the lore, you absolutely understood exactly what the tone is.
@bad-people651013 күн бұрын
I mean it aligns with Fallout 4... but Fallout 4 was shit. It aligns in that they both went for all flash and no substance and they're both horrendously written. But when it comes down to specifics, details, facts, the show is very inconsistent, not only with the games, but with itself.
@YugSihtTsuj17 күн бұрын
So, just a few things you might as well know: There have been ghouls in every game, some feral, some not. It's long been a fan theory that the onset of mental decline is unpredictable, which is why many are still people. The drug to hold off the decline is new for the show, but it doesn't contradict anything in the games. Every game so far has had a recruitable dog companion, and its default name is usually Dogmeat. My headcanon is that it's a traditional name in the Wastes for an adopted stray dog. The Brotherhood of Steel is a widespread quasi-religious order loosely grouped into chapters; they don't all agree on their exact mission, sometimes leading to conflict between chapters (as in FO3). Depending on which chapter you're dealing with, they can be the good guys or the bad guys. The city in the last shot is indeed New Vegas, where the eponymous game is centered. The Fallout timeline's only clear break from our history is that the transistor wasn't invented until after 2050. I could write an essay about how, but TL;DR, this prevented nearly everything listed by Billy Joel in "We Didn't Start The Fire" from happening.

I like how in the fallout mtg crossover the description that comes with the Dogmeat deck describes him as always "appearing to the one who needs him the most" or something along those lines which vaguely implies that all the Dogmeats were the same dog, and that Dogmeat is some kind of eldritch being that chooses humans to appear to and assist as a dog sometimes
@Gassit17 күн бұрын
The name Dogmeat is a shout out to the 1975 movie A Boy And His Dog staring a young Don Johnson, yes the same Don Johnson from the TV series Miami Vice. A Boy And His Dog is often referenced as one of the inspirations for the Fallout games and is well worth a watch IMO.
@j.f.fisher531816 күн бұрын
There's also a fan theory going around that the drug is a scam. I thought that the symptoms of not getting the drug were coughing instead of acting like an early stage of what we see from the characters who actually go feral seemed dumb until I encountered that theory, now I think it was a clue. Maybe it's cough medicine and the ghoul is dependent on getting it. Dunno, if so we'll see.

5:25 The only Fallout game I've played is New Vegas, and two of its DLC's portray this dichotomy well; Lonesome Road and Old World Blues. Lonesome Road explores themes of the devastation of nuclear war, the consequences of our actions, the death of a nation and a culture, and the horrible extents people can be pushed to, giving up all prior allegiances to become something tough enough to survive. Meanwhile, in Old World Blues, you are abducted by a crashed satellite, completely lobotomized and survive, only to be confronted by five pre-nuclear Armageddon scientists who have kept themselves alive by putting their brains in jars on robots, from which they have continued their experiments for hundreds of years. Each of them are hilariously insane, you collect sentient house appliances like lightswitches, radios and blenders each with their own silly personality, you fight off robotic scorpions and evil monologues that were all made and programmed in a drug-induced fervor by the sixth scientist who doesn't even remember it because of the drugs, and that guy also has your brain, which you were functioning without, who you now have to CONVINCE to get back in your body! It features such highlights as: a sentient stealth suit, a dog's brain in a machine gun, one of the scientists being stuck in high volume mode, and the "fuse shit together" machine. So yes, while some parts of the series are serious and depressing and downright philosophical, some parts are HILARIOUSLY silly and tongue-in-cheek.

Lucy is your first playthrough of a Fallout game. Completely new to the world with a lot to learn. Primarily focused on your main quest objective. Maximus is an intermediate playthrough. Some familiarity with the world and its workings, but with crucial gaps in your knowledge, the game can still throw you for a loop. The Ghoul is a veteran of the franchise. With in-depth knowledge of the game's mechanics and the various factions. You've seen it all and know the most brutally efficient route to take in order to get the most out of quest rewards, etc. Would highly recommend you give some of the Fallout games a go if you enjoyed the series. The first couple of games (Fallout and Fallout 2) are isometric CRPGs. Great but not as accessible/intuitive as some of the later installments. They were developed at Interplay and Black Isle Studios. When the original developers went bust, the rights were sold to Bethesda, the developers of the Elder Scrolls series of games. Fallout 3 changed the gameplay significantly, bringing the camera down to a first person perspective and introducing some shooter elements to the gameplay. This was my own introduction to the series as I was interested in playing more Bethesda games after falling in love with Oblivion. After 3 came New Vegas, made by Obsidian (a new studio that included a number of people who worked on the first two Fallout games). New Vegas was made on pretty much the same engine as 3 and with a very short development cycle. Nonetheless, Obsidian managed to make what is often regarded as one of the best games in the franchise. It will also likely play heavily into the show's next season. After New Vegas the franchise went back to Bethesda for Fallout 4, where shooting mechanics were further refined and base building was introduced. Fallout 4 is the easiest/most accessible for new players. There are other games in the franchise, but the core games are 1-4 plus New Vegas.

New Vegas is not just hailed as the best in the series. It's hailed as one of the best RPG's ever made. @@pascalbesselsen9957 New Vegas did not get clunky over the years, it was always clunky, but most fans happily ignored that until FO4, when people realised that Fallout could be a really smooth shooter. The perfect Fallout game, for most fans, would probably be the smooth gun and melee action from FO4 coupled with the rpg and story elements from New Vegas. New Vegas is only hailed as the best by a small subset of Fallout fans, as "best game" is very subjective, one interpretation of "best game" is the number of units sold, Fallout 4 would win this hands down, having sold more copies than all the other versions combined. My own personal opinion is that, even though I own, and have completed, all of the Fallout games, the only one that keeps drawing me back is Fallout 4. Smooth gunplay is a hell of a draw, despite the less well defined rpg and story elements, but couple that with player base building, almost perfection.

So, in most Fallout games you CAN join the Brotherhood of Steel and gain access to their high tech weapons and armour, usually as a late game part of the main quest. The Brotherhood are... morally complicated, a situation not helped by major changes in their internal culture and even splitting into multiple factions over the course of the games which I believe cover about 120 years of history.
@chrisclay7013Күн бұрын
The main commandment of the Brotherhood is to keep old-world technology out of people's hands so they don't destroy the world again. The main problem with this is the "by any means necessary" mentality. There are recorded cases of the Brotherhood destroying settlements because they had tech they wanted but it was all that was keeping the settlement alive. They also feel that they're the only ones capable of handling the tech. They can be allies or enemies, depending on how you play.

I love when new people go in blind to something I love. To answer your question about the characters, all of them are original to the show. The games always left the exact details of the start of the nuclear apocalypse vague, since they arent relevant to a player character living 200 years later. The games just tell you that there had been a conventional war over energy resources between the US and China for years, and then the bombs were dropped. So the show took the opportunity to fill in the details of what actually happened in 2077. Also, you can choose to join the Brotherhood in some of the games, or at least help them in their goals, or you can work against them. Fallout is more of a "build your character as you go" kind of game. And you can get power armor without joining them.

Fallout is one of those games that is on a short list of great open world games, no it may npt be as polished as elden ring or visual stunning like horizon but its story telling is pretty amazing as long u remember to read the terminals it tells the entire story from multiple points of view. And hey who doesn't love a game where u can be good or evil and it actually have a impact on the game space.

Its and RPG first meaning it prioritizes story and character choices more than graphics. This is why I like 1 and 2 the best (they were top-down turn based isometric RPGs with a huge focus on story). Of the 3D games I like New Vegas the best as it is the most story focused, then 3, then 4. 4 has the best graphics of those because its the newest. Honestly though, all the games are great. I even liked Fallout Tactics which was not an RPG at all, but a top-down isometric squad based tactics game. I never played BoS (which I hear is the worst in the series), and I have not played 76, which is technically the newest, mostly because its an MMO and I gave up on MMOs a long time ago when I quit WoW, but every fallout game but BoS and 76 I can confirm are awesome.

The fallout 4 main questline and even a lot of the side quests felt like they needed more fleshing out. I would love to see more settlment building and the ability to make it influence the story (like if you build really robust, well defended settlments where everyone is happy, that should affect your end credits and how certain factions interact with you in game). I see a lot fo potential there. Here is hoping fallout 5 does this.

Terrific video. I'd love to see some of your reactions when you play the games. Keeping in mind, Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 are very different from 3, New Vegas, and 4 (and Fallout 76, of course). The first two were top down games, and the rest have been open world RPG-style (you can play third person or FPS). It's one of my two favorite franchises in all of gaming, alongside Assassin's Creed. Also: when I started the video, there were 3,300 views. Now it's up to 3,600. It's nice to see a video start to blow up a bit in real time.

The show takes place after the games (2296) in the same area as Fallout 1 (2161) and 2 (2241). You find out roughly what happened leading up to the apocalypse and what Vault Tec and various other factions were up to. The show is fleshing out specifics, I imagine with the assistance of Bethesda. Other Vaults have been opened for one reason or another, but I wont spoil which incase you play the games. Some vaults you find empty, others are only alluded to in records and found items. Vaults like 31, 32 and 33 have never been shown in game, but you get very close to them in Fallout 1. There are still something like 80+ Vaults that have never been shown or alluded to. Fallout New Vegas (2281) we'll see in season 2. Fallout 3 (2277), 4 (2287) and 76 (2102) take place on the east coast so I doubt we'll see anything about them besides easter eggs.

In FALLOUT games, you usually start out as a vault dweller; there are usually several factions you can side with; each faction path gives you optional choices which can change the way the game plays out and ends; much of the fan reaction is around lore reveals which make certain possible game endings canon, within the series; the lore of specific vaults are a big part of the game; as a player, you regularly explore vaults to fulfill quests and gather important resources, weapons and armor…

All three characters basically represent players of the game during different Stages of their playthrough. Lucy is the new player who doesn't know anything and stumbles their way through the games as a normal person would. Generally tend to be kind but can be taken advantage of pretty easily. Maximus is the player who knows bit about the games and is super immersed in their faction of choice and want to progress in that faction. The ghoul represents the veteran who has played so long that they know every choice, quest line and combat encounter like the back of their hand. They are very skilled but also pretty apathetic to the world after playing the life out of the games.

Also, while the storyline of the show is mostly self contained, as are each of the games, they all feed into each other to fill out the bigger picture of the world at large. Don't worry, it'll make more sense the deeper you dive in. Honestly, this is one of the biggest reasons I loved the show so much! They put soooo much love and attention to detail into it, making it truly feel like Fallout, and not some cheap cash grab like the Borderlands movie was. It's an amazing stepping stone into the world for those who have never played the games, investing you in the story and leaving you wanting more!

All these comments, and I haven't seen anyone explain Fallout character builds to you? Every game starts with you selecting your "SPECIAL" attributes, which stands for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, and Luck. The attributes are on a scale from 1-10, and can change as your character levels in the game. Lucy, Maximus, and the Ghoul all have their own SPECIAL. You can see times in the show where each characters SPECIAL plays into the situation they're in, like Maximus failing a charisma check with Lucy when they're in Vault 4, or Maximus' higher agility saving them on the bridge when they come across those raiders...

I'm new to your channel, but this was a really outstanding video! Not only was your engagement with the story thorough, your engagement with the _feeling_ of the show and your own humorous edits were well paced and balanced with the rest of the script. As a LONGtime Fallout fan (started with Fallout 1!), it was a real treat to get to hear someone so thoroughly entertained by it break down their impressions before, during, and after the experience of the show (which was really wonderful, fun, and extremely in tune with the games). Thanks much for tackling this, and welcome to the Fallout universe! I see toward the end you say that you're now going to check out the games, which is super fun because it's just overall a great franchise. You'll have a great time with Fallout 4, Fallout 3, New Vegas, and if you've got the mood for it, DO NOT PASS UP Fallout 1 or 2! They're very different gameplay wise as they came out first, before the series went 3D. They're fun if you're fine with the mechanical differences from those that come later in the series. Fallout Tactics is the shunned step-child of the fandom because it's significantly different gameplay distilled down to near-purely turn-based combat with little to no narrative story or proper "rpg" elements, but _I personally enjoyed it plenty through the years._ *However, for engagement related to the show, you'll want Fallout 1, 2, 3, New Vegas, or 4* (or Fallout 76 if you want the multiplayer potential, but I recommend you sink your teeth into the others listed primarily). Do NOT even worry about chronology, either. You can safely feel free to jump into the series at any entrypoint, with the only considerations being setting and certain game mechanics -- ie: the fandom will favor and thus recommend some iterations over others, due to production preferences _(or loyalties...),_ *but the lore and "Fallout aesthetic and experience" is very much intact across the board,* and you'll have a good time experiencing them just like the rest of us longtimers did as they came out. Cheers! And welcome to a great series!

Something about when it's peoples "First time" with Fallout via the show, there is are lore bits sprinkled throughout that (I FEEL at least) get bushed off to the side by most new people to the series. And an example of that is in Episode 6. When Lucy is in that classroom, there is SO MUCH there lore wise that I wish there was more...IDK Curiosity. Like stuff like that whole scene SHOULD make viewers go "What WAS this?" "Is there more to this?" etc. And it just feels like a lot of times when people talk about the show from the eyes of someone new, its just bushed to the side as not important or interesting.
