Awesomely cute block, Corey! I need to get in gear and join this sew-along! I’m sure I could probably catch up if I just get going! My sewing room had to get all boxed up due to having to replace the window due to hail damage to the metal trim. (Actually all of the windows on the south side of our house had to be replaced! All 11 plus a sliding glass patio door!) Everything had to be moved 6’ away from the windows to allow the installers room to work. Since the room is small every thing had to be dismantled and boxed up and moved out the room. The tables are back up and my machine set up again but most of my fabric is still in boxes waiting to be given a new home in my room somewhere. What a mess! It has taken nearly all summer too because the installation date had to be delayed due to shipping issues. We are just now getting back to normal. I’m ready to get back to work in there and make a quilt! Thanks for this sew along. It looks like so much fun! I think I could catch up if I get going on it! Maybe I’ll just do it!

I’m excited for this one, I love the Churn Dash block! I still use my June Tailor ruler almost every time I need to trim hst’s and qst’s. Once in a while I’ll use a small square ruler that has a couple layers of painters tape on the diagonal, it works well, too, because the tape line nests nicely into the seam. I forgot to tell you yesterday that I’m sending off my Beautiful Day quilt to Kaylene Perry this morning. One of her August specials is perfect for it. I’m excited to have her quilt it!

Love the mini churn dash as an accent. Is there a tutorial on your page for making the pin cushion?
@CorianderQuilts
@CorianderQuilts Жыл бұрын
I don't have a pin cushion tutorial on my website. If I wanted to turn the 3 1/2" mini churn dash into a pin cushion, here's what I would do. First, make the 3 1/2" mini churn dash block. Second, cut a piece of backing fabric 3 1/2" square. Place the mini block and the backing piece of fabric right sides together. Beginning on one side, sew a 1/4" seam allowance around the entire perimeter leaving a gap to turn the project right side out. Make sure to back stitch when you begin and end. Clip all 4 corners so they can be more easily poked out once the project is turned right side out. Flip the project right side out through the gap. Stuff the pin cushion using poly-fil or ground walnut shells depending on your preference. Hand sew the gap shut.

Here is what I found in response to your question: "The Churn Dash block originated in the 1800's and it represents the humble butter churn, looking down from above. The outer pieces of the block resemble the churn and the center square resembles the stick (or the dash)."

love this block. But I'm not good at sewing these little pieces. I sew a scant 1/4" seam, but then it seems to mess with the points. I do a lot of sewing and have been making a lot of quilts lately -- but just can't do perfect small pieces. I starch every step of the way. I did the block, looks good except the middle is not perfect! :(
