As someone who travels often for work, my trick to refine my packing has been : I make a list *after* my trip noting what I wore and what items just made a round-trip in my suitcase; also a list of what I wish I had brought. So I get a little better each time.

I would love to see a carry-on only for 2 weeks for fall/winter. Packing bulky items is always more difficult (even more so when you are larger sized), especially if you need to pack for multiple types of excursion (casual, clubs, hiking/ outdoor activities, etc). This isn't a comment about this video but in general I see most people put out videos about packing for Europe in summer when it's obviously easier to pack when everything is just smaller overall.

I'm not going anywhere, but this was a useful video for those who do carry-on only. Personally, I like to check my one large suitcase because I don't have to worry about packing light (but I do keep the weight limit in mind) and it allows me more room to bring home anything I acquire while away. Not only that, but when I travel, I always have to catch a connecting flight, and I usually have a long wait in between, so I appreciate the fact that only having a small crossbody bag with my passport and essentials makes it more comfortable for me while wandering around the airport, in and out of shops, restaurants, etc, than lugging a suitcase around with me, everywhere I go, including the bathroom! To me, it's well worth the extra cost of checking in my bag. ✈️
@NinaPisani-p7i6 ай бұрын
Same. For me, packing in the slightly larger suitcase allows me to better organize things. And then its so much easier to find stuff. Anytime I try too hard to get in the true carry on size (20in of pack space + 2 inches for 4 spinner wheels), I am just cramming stuff in like a game of tetris.

I have extensive arthritis (since age 18) and fibromyalgia so I pack a medium bag which I check and a largish personal item where I put all of my meds for the trip. I can’t handle a carry on. Since all in-country flights I take allow me to check two bags for free, it’s a non-issue.

Note that if you traveling somewhere tropical and very heated, you shouldn`t probably put in your carry on your favourite or very expensive tops, especially if they are ligt colored. You will sweat a lot in a hot tropical weather and your body would also probaly covered in sunscreen. And that mix of sunscreen and sweat sometimes can make yellowish spots and soak the yellowness into the fabric. And those yellow spots are not easy to wash off, some of my clothes was ruined after Thailand and Tanzania. So now I only take with me the tops that I don’t mind getting ruined because getting really sweaty and using sunscreen in many tropical countries is inevitable.

Our whole family spent three weeks in Japan in December 2023 each with a small carry-on only based on careful planning. It was so good for travelling on all the trains! Within New Zealand there is often a strictly enforced 7kg limit for carry-on which is super difficult 😬. Most KZbin carry-on videos wouldn't meet that restriction.

I'm 37 years old and I already have a *hotdups* black Birkin bag, which was the first good choice I ever made. I can afford a Kelly bag in any color. If I were 25, I'd probably buy it. But now I consciously don't want to associate with a woman who has a Kelly and a Birkin. I have no interest in spending $40k on a bag (a piece of leather + labor = up to $1000) Imagine spending $39k on this brand. Totally unnecessary.

I just commented on this!!! Is getting a little harder for us carry on only people! I went to Vietnam 2023 carry on was 7 kilos! (Eva Air) I was in Turkey April 2024 Turkish airline carry on is 7 kilos and in their website they also list weight for the personal item (but going and coming it was not weighed). I am planning a trip to India the airline the best fits schedule and budget is Emirates and they only allow ONE piece of carry on at 7 kilos. So basically either a personal item or a carry on but NOT both (if you are not traveling premium or 1st class) they are making it hard!!!
@cs48492 ай бұрын
I went on a 10-day trip to Norway this summer, and since we were above the arctic circle, I needed warmer clothes. The limit on that flight was 8 kg, and the personal item had a size restriction our usual small backpacks didn’t meet. I got a handheld luggage scale and invested in lightweight merino clothes and a lightweight carry-on bag (from July) and my packed bag actually was just over 6 kg. The weight limit really forces you to plan carefully, doesn’t it.
@bryonytownend71372 ай бұрын
7kg! Wow. I usually only take a rug sack and still that’s small! Since they invented washing sheets, that you can freshen up clothes with for longer trips, packing light is so much easier. It’s usually when you’ve been to some lovely European country and gone shopping that you end up having to wear extra layers on the plane on the way back! Anyone else been there😂…..

I just came back from a two week trip to Italy, Greece, and Croatia which included a cruise. A friend had just come back from a similar trip, and she checked her bag. It never caught up to her on her trip. Since we were going to be on the move, I packed a stylish backpack. Because this was the only bag I was bringing, I had to be very strategic and, I used the 5-4-3-2-1 formula and it was perfect. And yes, I did bring washable items that dried overnight. I watched people struggling with large rolling bags on the trains in Italy and I’m sorry to say I did feel a bit smug😊

I hate the fight for the overhead bins. I am a non conflict person and the anxiety of getting in line ASAP to fight for bin space is too much. Some people are just A-Holes and move your bags away so they can put there's in. Now I intentionally board with group 7 (or whatever is last) and just walk to my seat. I have airline credit cards, which give me free checked bags. An airtag lets you know the location of the bag. I know my bag is at the destination airport. I find my 24inch bag (not including wheels) can comfortably handle a weeks worth of clothes (warm climate) and is easily under 35 pounds. If my trip is longer than 5-6 nights, I plan to do laundry. I only go "carry on size" when: 1) I know I can fit everything I need in the small suitcase. I am not a fan of the carry-on suitcase + giant stuffed backpack/purse. At that point a larger suitcase is more efficient to organize and find you things. 2) I am going to a large metro area where having a really light weight suitcase makes life easier (looking at you NYC!).

I totally hear you. I see almost everyone coming on airplanes with their roller bag and personal item. Very few people are showing up at the gate with just a personal item anymore and you know they are going to be calling for people to "volunteer" to check one of their carry-ons. I drives me nuts when I see a roller bag, really big backpack (like the kind you'd take on a backpack holiday-not a city pack) and another personal item and they sail right past the flight attendant and then I get randomly selected to gate check my bag! Sometimes I am tempted to go back to a checked bag. But...if am going to be moving around a lot on my holiday, especially if you are leaving your destination airport immediately and can't wait for delayed luggage, then carry on is the only way. But taking carry-on has become more stressful in the last couple of years. The fiasco a couple of summers ago with the huge piles of lost luggage at airports and storage facilities has caused a lot of people to go with carry-on, understandably. But for those of us who have been flying with carry on for years and now face the possibility of having your bag randomly gate checked, its anxiety inducing for sure.

I selected my credit card JUST to unlock the two checked bag perk, and now I check every time, even when I only have a small carry-on sized bag to check. As a solo traveler, I love not having to fight for space and lug stuff around the airport.

I don't deal with the overhead bin anymore now that I have the under the seat bag luggage. I am tired of the lifting, dealing with finding bin space, and refused to volunteer or be picked at random to check my luggage.
@goldfish38584 ай бұрын
what I hate more is the fact that airlines refuse to enforce these policies. If I pay for Delta Comfort +, only ppl in that row where I'm seated with can have access to the overhead bins. They should only limit that space for 1 carry-on or a small roller, anything else aside from a personal bag must be check-in. Legit the same situation with the seat squatters, if I pay more, only the ppl who pay should have the benefit. this ish needs to change ASAP

I think it totally depends on where you are going, how long time you will be away and what you are going to do when you get there! A long weekend in London I will have just a carry-on with my things but sometimes put in my big suitcase. It depends on if we are going shopping or just looking at musicals & going to museums and stand-up places. A three week vacation in Thailand is easy to pack in a carry-on but a three week vacation to South America with both sunbathing, hiking in the mountains where it is cold and visiting big cities is a totally different thing. Then you need a big suitcase as just hikingboots and warmer cloths takes up a lot of space!

Good tips. I take fewer undies and hand wash. I use the ‘bundle’ method for fewer wrinkles, and skip jeans because they are bulky and heavy when compared to dress pants. Weight is more of my issue since I’m short and hefting the bag over my head is getting harder as I get older. Thankfully there is usually someone taller wanting to get by me on the plane that will help.

✈️✈️✈️ I’m going to Portugal for a month (2 weeks working remotely and 2 weeks holiday). I’m going by ferry and estate car. So, space is less of an issue, but I want to learn how to carry less stuff more generally, as I always overpack and still have to carry my heavy case up stairs, etc. Thanks for a fantastically useful video. 🎉🎉🎉

✈️. We're headed to Europe a week from today for 2 weeks and we're doing one carry on and one back pack each. I am already mostly packed but you encouraged me to go back and remove a few items. We start in Paris and then we rented a camper van for a week + to wander to Switzerland, Italy and then back across France ending with two more days in Paris. There's potentially going to be snow and hot weather and fancy dinners and camping so it's challenging! I went with a lot of silks, one pair of durable khakis, a pair of foldable ballet flats, barefoot sneakers and wool booties (I will wear on the plane). A medium weight jacket, Merino hoodie and a stuff into itself rain jacket (we have ebikes being delivered ahead of us). I'm now convinced I only need two tshirts, two tanks, one bra and one pair of shorts. I have one pair of silk pajama style pants, a pair of lighter weight cargo pants and two light weight cashmere sweaters. I'm taking out two of the four button down shirts thanks to you. Lastly, an extra back pack (for day use in case we need it to bring stuff back) and a small cross body bag. Thanks for the tips!

Just got back from a car trip to the UK. We went for a week, weather was better than the forecast so barely needed my jacket. I wore everything I brought, but some more often than others. I regret bringing my heavier shoe. Should have taken the Samba instead. We discovered the soapbar type product for shampoo and skincare, but it wasn’t really an issue as we were driving. I don’t wear make up, but always bring a daycream, my fave being Biodermal anti ageing sunscreen factor 30 or 50. While there bought a breton stripe t-shirt and cargo shorts from M & S which I will prrobably wear to pieces over the coming years. My daughter bought two quality gilets to suit her vintage style.

That’s double what I pack but I’m not so fussed with fashion but comfort. Also, being older, the lighter the better. I agree, no need to take items that will be provided. Off to Poland on Saturday. I love packing. 👋🏻🇦🇺

In Australia, it is only 7kgs and 1 personal handbag together when travelling other states. They even weigh you 😢 The carry on luggage is already heavy hence I use a duffle bag to maximise my kgs.
@TerriWiebe-hq3rz5 ай бұрын
They weigh you as a person? They fo that on helicopter rentals as they have to distribute the weight evenly on both sides for better handling. But I've never heard of airlines doing so

✈️ We’re traveling from Edmonton to Thunder Bay to celebrate our son becoming a paramedic. Thanks for the reminder that I can pack light and still have everything I need… I’ll just go and remove half of what I have laid out now. 🙃

I have a trip to Florida coming up in a couple of months, and while I have a general idea of what I want to bring, the next step is for me to condense that in carry-on only luggage. I have both a rolling duffel bag as well as a travel backpack, so this video will definitely be referenced when the time comes closer! 😊✈

Depends how long is the travel. And always check weight limit on carry on of your airline. Coz my luggage is about 2 - 3 kilos already and where I usually travel I’m allowed 7 kilos only.

🛩 I'm glad I found your channel and this video. I have done a lot of traveling this month and every time I went on shorter trips I seemed to pack more. I'm definitely going to try your method for the next trip I go on and see if I cam get the whole family into a normal size suitcase instead of 3!! Thanks again!

the only reason i could not carry on everywhere, eventhough i almost always do, its because im size 10 and 2 shoes take the whole carry on

✈ Going to Japan in the fall. One thing I must travel with and have on before I even leave for the airport are compression socks, especially on long-haul flights, and artificial tears because like you say, "Planes are incredibly dehydrating." 😢

✈ I consider myself a pretty good packer, but there's always room for more tips! There are more downsides to carry-on since we always fly first class and checking baggage is free. There is never enough room in the carry on compartments and throwing things up there is a pain. Same with dragging luggage through the airport while you're waiting for your flight. Pass. I do like compression bags for underwear and pj's so they are easy to find. I also have the small clear sided bags for make up and toiletries - love them. Also LOVE the strapless dress you showed and I haven't been able to find one (the ones on Amazon are too long) - they're all sold out everywhere! Packing for Miami in June which is actually pretty easy since summer clothes/shoes are lighter and just easier to mix and match. Thanks!

I found your tip very helpful but the problem is you don't always find a place to do laundry. I always travel in the summer so I am not wearing tops twice without washing them. The sink only works for socks and underwear.
