I did the trick of tying down the vertical branches on my 3 year old apple and had spectacular results. The tree went from producing 4 apples per season to 20! Fruit trees are definitely more likely to fruit on more horizontal branches and the tree shape is beautiful.

Malabar spinach grows crazy. Almost like you can stand there and see it growing. It's in a raised bed my neighbor planted. When she quit gardening she pulled the plants out. I was watering all the beds and up comes the malabar after 3 months. I cared for it. When it flowered and went to seed, I pulled all of them out. Still watering, up comes the malabar again after about 4 months. It puts out these vines that can be 10 feet long. When I harvest it, it looks like I have a Christmas wreath hanging on my arm. It's good raw in salads, sandwiches, stir fry. Not to good if steamed. Gets a bit slimy. I cut a branch off and threw it in the next empty bed and it rooted on its own. Now have 2 beds.

Great that you got to go on the training at Henbant.... we've just been assigned a mentor from Farming Connect to help us get our agroforestry plans finalised ready for the planting season ahead.... exciting! I'm just putting some of your chicken composting plans into action from your book as well, to process my horse manure! Cheers

great show, grapes go dormant at certain times of the year, winter here (Australia) no growth til the weather warms up, good luck with yours; i enjoy seeing what you do from week to week from season to season, weeds like your thistle & dandelions i love leaving them as they help my soil here & are also good food source for the chooks; have been watching Danu's Irish Herb Garden along with you for new ideas along with my own backyard growers 'Self Sufficient Me' who is extremely practical & has changed my views on raised garden beds (though a killer to get filled) as i'm getting older. your flowers look amazing & wish mine would self seed as easily thanx for sharing your amazing gardens with us

Nice catch up and some really exciting plans. Just be careful with the horse manure! Mae sure it is well rotted otherwise you will just be planting weeds for the next 7 years. I talk from bitter experience.

Hello Huw, if you are planning a permaculture orchard PLEASE check out Stefan Sobkowiak, an extremely knowledgeable teacher and permaculture orchard owner here in Québec. He has been sharing what he has learned from experience for many years - on KZbin and in class. He is a wonderful resource and I have no doubt you would enjoy his teaching style.

Around 5:30 - is this a newer hybrid of lupine? I thought they were pretty much all toxic, unless the beans were put through some rigorous de-bittering.

You can swap in carrot tops for the basil. You can swap in other nuts for the pine nuts. Pesto is made with herby greens and nuts, but not limited to basil and pine nuts.

My mother used to make carrot top tempura. It’s delicious! Mix cake flour, an egg, ice cold water and salt into a crepe like batter (it should be thinner than pancake batter). Dip the carrot tops on the batter and deep fry. Eat with soy sauce or salt. You can use cauliflower leaves too. For the cauliflower florets I would recommend a thicker batter. (Just add more flour)
