I always liked the Lionel display layouts. Our local department store gad them every year at Christmas! My favorites were the big 8 X 8 jobs. Except for today's big scale engines and cars they could run anything, and had loads if accessories. Those were the days!

Pretty cool stuff, Dave. The black and white metal crossing gate is a Marx accessory. You can control them cheaply and easily with a simple insulated isolated outside rail section(s). They are easily made from the tinplate tubular track by removing sections of outside rails and adding cardboard insulators just like the center rails and install plastic track pins on each end of the isolated section. This will work like a single pole switch to control anything using the wheels to complete the circuit as long as the wheels and axels are metal. It's one of the advantages of a 3-rail track. I soldiered all my wires to the bottom of my track for feeders and controls and ran all wiring below my benchwork out of sight. I used the thin cardstock from the back of the blister packaging that came from my pushbutton and bat handle toggle switches that I used for my control panels to make the tie insulators. The block signals will require a normally open normally closed relay to provide separate control of the red and green lights if you don't have turnouts to connect them to. The #153C track trips you got are designed for the signal bridge as they are a mechanical pressure switch with NO/NC contacts that are activated by the weight of the train by placing under a track tie. I used these initially and successfully even though I used the foam track bed by cutting out a section of track bed for the switch installation but was constantly adjusting them between operating sessions. I removed them and used an insulated isolated rail section to control accessory power from my transformer to the input power of a no/nc realy. I bought a RIB relay through Trainz for 5 bucks. #RIBMN12C. It's a 12 volt ac/dc N/O N/C relay with dry contacts. You can power the relay and the switch contacts from the same power source and circut because the lights are designed to use transformer power. The control track sections, whether the O-gauge UCS type or the #6019 for O27 track, like the one you have, can be wired using a single 2 wire conductor and a single pole single throw normally open momentary contact switch. I used both styles of control tracks with my O-gauge track using the larger track pins on the #6019. I like the 6019's for 027 because they can be modified and wired independently using the accessory power, and they can still be attached to the O-gauge tubular track. I bought all my control panel switches from my local Menards. This will permit easy installation while condensing space on the control panel. Check out Mike's Toy Trains Tips and Tricks. He does a very good job with diagrams explaining how to convert these to two wire control of both uncouple and unload using a spst momentary pushbutton switch. I made my wedged shaped control panels out of scrap wood and Masonite and screwed them to the facia of my layout. I used piano hinge for the front covers to gain easy access to all of the switches and controls inside and also serve as trackside tools and smoke fluid storage. I also installed my relays inside my control panels for easy access. Maybe you could build a layout to roll out from under your permanent layout. If you put the other operating accessories on a shelf I think it would be a neat idea if you wired them to switches to demonstrate how they functioned. Have fun with the new items. I'm constantly making changes along the way but enjoying every minute.

Really cool bunch of stuff, those accessories are a lot of fun. I have a layout under my main layout, a few hints. 1 make sure it is on wheels so you can pull it out from under the main layout to work on it / play with it. 2 it kind of is a pain when you need to get to the underside of the main layout, again make sure you can easily pull it out of the way.

Wheels! Genius. I was thinking of mounting it to the legs already there, that would be such a pain to work on. I have the space in the middle of room to pull it out into. I’ve gotta get to designing.

That'a fine assortment of vintage hardware Dave! After reading the previous comments from everyone there's nothing I can add except if you can't find a home for them on the layout the display shelf's just fine, old artifacts can be a wonder in themselves.

Yes, the crossing pieces can be very noisy, also on my K-line super snap track one a few items have a dead spot problem. It has a 1.8 inch center of all plastic, for all three rails. I think my small steamers had some trouble with it, and some thing else. But it was a different item to put out on the layout, and the 90 degree crossing was already out of the pack when I got it.

The Postwar accessories are so much fun. There’s nothing like them all cleaned up and running. The #1045 Flagman is a cool accessory actually, even though he’s oversized. The best part of yours is that yours has the original flag in his hand unbroken. It needs a 1045C track clip in order to work properly. Try him out. He’s a lot of fun to see him waving his flag up and down. The next time you plan on coming out to Long Island, drop me a line. I invite you to come to my home and take a look at my Postwar and MPC trains and accessories collection. I think you’ll find it pretty interesting. I’ll give you a lot of insight. Tom

The #1008 Cam-Trol is a manual way of uncoupling the cars. It was designed to be used only on O27 track because of the height, and placed on a flat solid section of your layout to operate correctly.

Hey Dave, You got a very cool box of Postwar parts and accessories. I noticed starting at the 2:02 of your video you found a black button, a black bracket, and black rubber thing. Those 3 things go with the #3562 Operating Barrel Car. The button is the 96C Controller that would be connected to the OTC-1 Lockon to operate the barrel car. The black metal piece is a #3562-48 Ramp Clip that attaches to the #362 Operating Barrel Ramp in order for the barrel car to unload the barrels into the barrel ramp. The black runner thing is the #3562-51 Track Spacer for the barrel loader. It measures the correct distance between the track and the barrel loader. Also, you’ll notice two different grooves in that spacer. 1 groove is used for the height of “O” Gauge track, and the other side is used the height for O27 track. The edge of either of the 2 rails goes into the groove. Originally, the barrel car came with 2 of those track spacers, but you can work with 1 if need be. The other thing with the crossing gate, you don’t need to go out and spend a lot if money on a #153IR Sensor to operate your crossing gate. Just use an insulated rail piece of track to operate it. A simple track clip attached to the insulated rail section, then wired to the accessory, and your done. Your accessory is up and running. Tom
