BTBAM is phenomenal, and totally unique. I never get tired of the way their songs are written. You genuinely don't know what musical genre you're going to get in any given section. Less than a minute apart, they can take you to a cafe in Paris, a saloon in NC, on an interstellar journey, or to an extremely serene and heartfelt personal serenade.

#1 BTBAM has put out nothing but gold since Alaska (featuring selkies), this album is the follow up to that album. I appreciate that you pointed out that they are having fun with it because that has always been my favorite thing about them. They are ludicrously skilled musicians and song writers but they are also capable or self aware enough to just do something wacky and fun just because it would sound cool.

@@trowabarton222 If you're referring to the tour at Mr. Smalls Theater in Pittsburgh, I went to that show. Best. Concert. Ever. And the funny thing is, during the 2nd phase of Silent Flight Parliament, the power went out for the whole neighborhood and they were forced to end the show. I got a vinyl of the album as it is also my favorite album of theirs, and arguably my favorite work of music, period. I happened to catch the part when the power goes out and I've been debating on posting it to KZbin lol. If you ever get a chance to go see them, do it. I've been to a good handful of concerts of every type of music genre, this was undoubtedly the best by far. The pure musicianship of these guys is unmatched.

Simply one of the most brilliant and sensational bands ever. These guys never get tired of telling incredible stories through their songs and albums. Their musicianship is out of this world, they can mix so many elements, so many layers, and sound incredibly good and organic, it's insane. Colors is a masterpiece, it was the album that set BTBAM apart from other bands, showing that they are unique and genius in their own direction and still with many good influences.

I dunno if anyone answered this for you, but I think the guitar style/technique used by Meshuggah that you were trying to reference was called "Djent", which is a sound made by palm mutes on electric guitar. However, I don't think BTBAM uses the "djent" technique all that much; the similarity you were hearing to Meshuggah was probably the "syncopated palm mutes", where the guitar, bass, and kick drum are all playing a pattern of hits in sync to create that "punch-y, rhythmic" sound.

This band expanded my musical horizons more than any other band I ever heard, back when I first discovered them in high school. Still really appreciate their music, though as time has gone on I tire a bit of the same style of 'progressive' that they play. Still impressive and fun, but doesn't quite hit the spot like it used to when I was younger. Colors and Alaska still hold up as their best albums IMO. Parallax is also pretty sweet though.

They do repeat though. In a song you will usually hear each riff come back once, and then on repeated listens you hear that the bass will do it a few times on separate occasions. And then the riff repeats by the keyboard later on the album, etc. Then there will be a suuuuuuuper slow bit and you will realize that it is a variation on that riff in a completely separate style. And then again. And then again but super weird. And they do this with several themes. This is a band that really rewards repeated listens.

I think you'd really like checking out Leprous. Also progressive metal/rock (more rock than metal nowadays, but it's all perfect). Their singer, Einar, is the brother-in-law of Ihsahn from Emperor, they've featured on a number of each other's songs (Einar on Ihsahn's solo project and Ihsahn with Leprous). I promise you that you will love Einar's voice. He is incredible. Their drummer, Baard, is also insane. Try some of these (One from each album, chronological order): Leprous - Forced Entry Leprous - Passing Leprous - Contaminate Me Leprous - The Price Leprous - From the Flame Leprous - The Sky is Red Leprous - Nighttime Disguise

“Is that how it ends??” Lmao. I’m sure you’ve figured out by now the whole album is one song. After the French part there’s that big epic section. The higher of the two voices their is the singer from Fear Before the March of Flames. Their album The Always Open Mouth is also really adventurous but more post hardcore than metal. He also did an album with a band called Orbs that has the btbam bassist playing guitar and they’re really interesting prog rock.

Something that other commentors have probably already said but Between the Buried and Me's records are generally written to be consumed start to finish in one sitting. Colors, the album this is from, being the most obvious about it with harsh cuts and very little blending between each song. As they expanded on this style of album writing they've gotten very good at leading into the next track

Rock band 2 is where I discovered them. The genre is progressive djent with mathcore which is just sporadic sudden rhythm and time changes. Like the more darker metalcore dream theater. It goes into another song. It's a concept album and each song seamlessly flows into another yet can be heard separately. I call it, progressive circus metal playcore. One of the my favorites along with the parralax 2 and automata. Check out the future is behind us, selkies the endless obsession and silent flight parliament by them and the dance of eternity by dream theater. Keep it up pink skull shadow fox aerith gaming lady.

Basically, every album kinda sounds different and they are all in a different subgenres, but you can tell it's them. My personal least favorites are their s/t and Automata, but even their worst stuff is like a 10/10 I'm just not good enough at listening to music to appreciate it probably. They basically wrote an entire album dedicated to Dream Theater in Coma (Memory Palace lol) but still made it their own. I would venture to say that the best death metal album of the year was also the best progressive rock album the same year that colors and parallax 2 came out, because they might be the two best albums of all time, especially in the metal/rock. They almost keep getting better in some regards. Colors is probably my favorite album of theirs but the sequel, Colors 2, is almost on par with it and is their most recent effort. They are going on tour playing their 6th full length album Parallax 2 when they get back to the states, which many people consider to be their best work. They are basically the best band and you should agree at minimum for state pride. Make sure to listen to the 2020 or whatever remix of The Great Misdirect. Out of all the remasters they did, that is the only one where I would say the entire album is better than the original version, you can just hear the instruments in obfusication and Swim to the Moon a billion times better. Parts of Silent Circus are better but the raw sound of the original is probably better if you're into that kind of thing.
