Good Art Bad Art is a weekly series where I share my opinion on the highs (and lows) of various creative endeavours. I will stick to the world of music, mostly, but might occasionally veer into literature too. Each video is 8 minutes of raw footage, filmed in one take. No fancy edits here! I want these videos to feel like discussions; as if you're here in the room with me, and you've just asked my opinion on the subject in question.
Do you agree or disagree with my views on Coldplay's Moon Music? Let me know!
What should the topic of my next Good Art Bad Art video be?

I actually don’t agree. I agree that they don’t sound the same as they did 20/25 years ago, but the song-writing on this album is incredible. I was not a fan of the Music Of The Spheres album, and thought I wouldn’t like this album either, but Chris’s vocal performance on a lot of these tracks were 10/10. Moon Music, the first song on the album gave me GOOSEBUMPS, the arrangement on that song was so brilliant. A critique of the album is the lack of real drums and the overuse of electronic elements, but that’s just how things are now 🥲😂 the album is just about commercial enough for radio but also contains a lot of experimental ideas you wouldn’t really expect from a band as big as they are. 2, 6 minute tracks, not that common in the realm of pop. 8/10 album for me. Pleasantly surprised by the overall soundscapes.

@@maddmags fr. To me they still sound like old Coldplay tho, musically. Sure it might be less acoustic and ever so slightly more commercialised but thats what happens when you reach 85 mil monthly listeners on Spotify 😂 it’s old Coldplay with a slightly more electronic flavour and I don’t mind it at all.

The reason they have other musicians who wish to collaborate is because they are that big. They are one of the only bands in history to reach every single country on the planet I personally do like their earlier work however their music has grown with them, they are a phenomenon They are very experimental and who wants to listen to a band that bring out 10 albums that all sound the same If you ever get the chance to go to one of their stadium concerts you will get it!!! How are you a music composer and be so negative and judgmental when it is clear that this album is genuine, has AMAZING production and it's actually super cohesive and very conceptual? at this point coldplay hate is just forced and you clearly just wanna be like the rest of the people who jump into the bandwagon of calling them bland or poppy and not like the old days LOL

this video is the definition of a nothing burger in NO PART of this video did you leverage actual musical critiques at coldplay. it was just complaining about their general style, and some “critiques” that you did say have zero merit. claiming that there are no real instruments or no hooks is absolutely ridiculous and even their harshest critics can acknowledge both of those things on the album. i am a coldplay fan, and even the bad reviews of their albums i watch to understand the reception behind it. i have never commented on a negative review saying it was bad. however, this review was bad. do better.

Their direction has definitely changed. I do miss the old Coldplay days but I can say that Music of The Spheres was an improvement compared to A Head Full of Dreams. But i will say that Moon Music did leave much to be desired. If anything, I'd say that they made an album out of what ideas were left from songs that weren't used by MOTS

Coldplay have evolved to be so much more than just about the music. They create community. They create an environment of joy. Reviewing an album is almost completely missing the point. Surely you knew roughly what you were going to get when you first pulled the album out of the sleeve. It should not have surprised you. Go take a look at the Glastonbury Community when they played Feels Like I'm Falling In Love. That is what Coldplay is about. By all means, rip the song apart and compare it to your favourite artists. The biggest world tour ever. Millions of people are looking for what Chris and the people behind him are creating. To me, (I wasn't there) they looked as if they received what they came for. I doubt that many of them could care less whether the latest album has the musical chops to satisfy every critic. In actual fact, most critics have been at least as negative as you are in this review. Doesn't seem to make any difference to the people who experience the music live. And isn't that the whole point? To create music that connects with people? Isn't that what you are trying to do when you sit at that upright piano or play those lovely guitars that you are sitting in front of? I think their music is hitting the mark for millions of people. Whether it hits the mark with a critic who didn't much like the music in the first place is almost irrelevant.

Coldplay are at the stage of a career where they want to include others to fulfill their vision, which is not possible with just the 4 of them. They've done the pure stuff at the beginning, some artists evolve. It's been a quarter of a century, they are so huge, they can venture out. You just can't appreciate the bigger picture. The title track is stunning.

Probably one of the lesser albums from the band. I love Coldplay and I know they can at least put out one good song per album (And this isn't the exception), but this just feels like the B-Sides of Music of the Spheres, which is a very Middle-of-the-road effort in itself save for Coloratura which was incredible. They used to have incredible producers in Ken Nelson, Rik Simpson, Brian Eno... Now they have Max Martin, and this is exactly how a Coldplay album produced by Max Martin sounds like. I find it paradoxical that Coldplay is striving for making their tours environmentally responsible and eco-friendly while their music sounds more and more plastic and artificial each time.

I feel like you, as well as many other people “criticizing” Coldplay’s music try to find ANYTHING to complain about. And that’s what this video was. 8 minutes of complaining about the most minuscule of components. In my opinion, MOON MUSiC is a great inspirational album for many people, including myself, to get through a darker, more uncertain time in life. Each track honestly brought my spirits up and made me emotional. And the instrumental components of the tracks were beautiful. You’re 100% right to have your own opinions, but to me, all I heard was you whining about how this album was “cliche” and “dull.” Nah. For someone who really only liked Parachutes and AROBTTH, you REALLY need to open your mind up more to the messages that Chris and the band are trying to convey with their more modern tracks instead of dismissing them as childish nonsense. It’s clear this album is not for you, but don’t hate on it just because you can’t relate to it.

u don't need to like the band's music, but telling people to listen to other music instead of this is insanely childish- which is ironic because you practically called this album childish. a review shouldn't consist you saying they should listen to more 'interesting music", just because you feel this album is "bad". again, u don't need to like it, but this is just an awful review.

@@watermelooonmoon I agree if that’s all they say, but that’s not all that he said is it? He explained the reasons for his criticisms and didn’t just say “listen to something else instead”. But you’re wrong anyway because, for example, plenty of times in a film review a reviewer will say something like “what they’re trying to do with this film didn’t work but if that’s the sort of thing you like I recommend this film instead”. None of the artists on the album are fashionable, apart from Burna Boy, and even then… So what you’re saying about reaching a bigger audience is totally wrong. On the other hand, it’s very fashionable to criticise Chris Martin’s voice, when he has a stable, powerful and above all recognisable voice, and that’s what we want from an artist too. What’s more, you should watch live videos of Coldplay and you’ll see that he’s actually one of the best singers around. When most of the artists that people praise hardly hit the right note, he sings impressively on key. I agree with you for the lyrics though. You seems to be pationate about music and you are probably very talented, but targeting Coldplay is not trendy anymore. A lot of artists do less…

Wow, Greg, if you think Moon Music is just another commercial pop album, then you've clearly missed the point. You seriously need to listen to tracks like Rainbow Emoji, One World, iAAM, All My Love, and of course MOON MUSIC again. These are absolutely stunning, intimate, and ethereal pieces, far from the commercial pop sound you're talking about. These tracks won’t dominate the charts precisely because they aren’t designed for commercial success-they’re genuine art. If you're really a composer, like you claim, maybe it's time to consider retirement and let truly talented artists like Coldplay continue to thrive. Sure, you're entitled to your opinion, but let's be real for a second-Coldplay has produced some incredible work in the past decade. Everyday Life? A masterpiece. And Coloratura? Easily one of the greatest songs the band has ever made. So, calling Moon Music mediocre just shows how little you actually understand about music. You’ve clearly missed the message of unity and love that Coldplay is sending. Instead, you're out here spreading negativity and bitterness. Maybe next time, try listening with an open mind instead of spewing pure meanness.

Interesting thoughts.. On your perspective regarding "why collaborate" and "they're diluting themselves" -- can you explain why that matters please? Wouldn't Coldplay's objective just be to deliver good music at the end of the day? I get that you didnt like their music, but Coldplay probably thought it was good enough and wanted to put good music out in the world. Regardless of your opinion (and I dont mean any disrespect), I think they would feel they've achieved enough to not care about what a collaboration would do to their "brand". As long as good music is produced for the world, which, again, I get that you didn't like, but that's fine! Because, honestly, noone or not many people care about your review (and I mean this in the nicest way possible, no jokes or disrespect), just like you probably don't care about my comment on your review. PS: I stopped watching when you referred to it as "bad karaoke singing".. clearly you're using Coldplay's Moon Music in the title for your video to beg for "views" on your silly little ignorant video ao people click on it and so you can feed yourself on the back of other successful people.... @James-vv7vh oh, and as far as getting the memo is concerned... there is a ton of unsolicited "review" trash out there.. from reviewing amazon products to movies to memes.. just coz they get views doesn't mean people care. No one is going to listen or not listen to Moon Music because of this review. Even if wonderful things were said about it. So, the only one benefiting from the review is the person making the video. You think you've come across as such a diva with your snarky reply about "don't know why he put the name of the album in his title"... unfortunately youve just come across as silly.. my point was, picking an album from one of the biggest bands in the world and their latest album is bound to get views.. so, the only person benefiting from this review is the person who made it..

It sounds like the worst habits of MOTS has persisted. A shame because Everyday Life was a latter career classic.

26/100 feels quite generous given that review! Not that I disagree...

Album was trash. When I heard a full minute of African chanting at the end of AETERNA I wanted to throw my phone through the wall. Album sucked hot farts. I’ll go clean my ears with their first 5 albums.

Coldplay were an alternative rock band 20 years ago 😭 it's not like they didn't release other albums between then and now. The progression and evolution are right in-between.
