I give an album reaction and review to Porter Robinson's third studio album after Worlds and Nurture. "SMILE! :D" the album has been highly anticipated after his singles leading up to it with Cheerleader, Knock Yourself Out XD!, Kitsune Maison Freestyle, and Russian Roulette.

I feel like the anti-climatic end is intentional, since he says that the biggest problem of nurture is that in the end it felt like he had figured things out and that he could finally have fun with music (cheerleader and kyoXD) but really, we are always finding ourselves in new problem and situations that really shows that there’s no happy ending or epic finale moment in life. The best we can do is acknowledge what makes us ourselves (everything to me), stop “smiling :D” and be happy :)

I actually don't think the ending to Nurture had a problem with feeling too complete. Trying to Feel Alive seems more like a new beginning to me, as the lyrics sound both unsure and comforting all at once-- acknowledging that there isn't going to be a grand finale to wrap everything up perfectly or satisfy him entirely ^-^ Alot of the lines start with "maybe-" or are questions to himself, or those lines end up incomplete (but hopeful), which I think is an incredibly beautiful way to end the album 🤍

@@andrewallcaps I agree too!! It feels like a track for a Nurture credits or something ^^ Tho I believe ttfa was added later on, due to that pandemic delay. So I guess Porter noticed that “too complete” mistake at the last second (thankfully) Imagine nurture without those extra tracks like ttfa and musician 0_0

I personally came to know about his work from "Everything Goes On" which has been my favourite song from the moment I heard it. I like his other work decently well too, but to me, the go to song to listen to for any real situation is literally just that one song; I'll have it on loop for hours and not get bored, I'd play games, read books, or even just think while it was on.

I really liked "Perfect Pinterest Garden", the Oh-Oh vocals hit so hard, i also agree with both "Mona Lisa" and "Is There Really No Happiness?", the singles packed the punch while the album brought feelings

the oh-oh is 100% what makes that chorus slappp totally feel that on the singles vs the album

I really dislike these types of titles of "Im gonna do this so you don't have to". It makes it seem both like you're wanting people NOT to go listen to it and to rely on your input rather than experience it themselves. It also gives the connotation that it's BAD and you don't want to subject them to it. I get you're prob tryna follow that classic youtube "nostalgia critic" vibe but it always feels a liil eh.

I got the click tho didn’t I haha but the video itself is overwhelmingly positive torwards the album, I believe anyone that wants to hear a review of it has either already heard it or plans on checking it out

I don’t really get why people say the back half is anticlimactic. Mona Lisa and Is There No Happiness are both upbeat songs. I could maybe see this argument with Everything to Me. But it’s really pretty (kind of reminds me of Beck’s Sea Change era). Like Happiness feels like the climax and Everything to Me is like the slow outro during the credits. I dunno it doesn’t feel that out of place to me.
