Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Actually, if it's an official video from "Holidays Around The World," their 2022 Christmas album, there are likely to be instruments that you won't see in the video. That album involved collaborations with musicians on several continents and COVID travel restrictions were still in place when they were making it so their collaborators couldn't appear in the videos with them. Also, there are a few of their official videos that contain important visual effects that can't be duplicated live. The three that spring to mind are "Imagine," "Bohemian Rhapsody," and "Aha!". Musically, however, their live performances are just as good as their official videos. Oh, yes. And we try to avoid pitch forks and torches whenever possible.

I vary a few things now and then, but right now I'm limited to hunt-and-peck on screen typing because of recent surgery to my left hand, so entering it all by hand every time is impossible and prone to typos. I have separate files for "Sound of Silence" and "Imagine" and "Hallelujah" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" and SuperFruit's version of "Rise," and one that identifies all the members. I discovered Pentatonix less than a year ago, just a few months after my husband killed himself. It's been a difficult year, but Pentatonix has helped. And most of the things I put in my comments are the things I would have found most helpful to know back when I first discovered Pentatonix, things like how to pronounce names, and who's who, and where to look for what.

The "Trio" (Scott Hoying, the tall blonde, white haired in the video. Mitch Grassi, shorter guy, high pitch counter tenor, first singer in the video. Kirstin "Kirstie" Maldonado, the woman with the blue wig) all were friends from high school/middle school and have been singing together since at least then. They brought in Avi Kaplan (the bass vocals) and Kevin Olusola (the beatboxer, also sings as a tenor) to perform on the Sing Off season 3 back in 2011, which they won. They've been a group since then, with only 1 member change. in 2017 Avi Kaplan left and Matt Sallee joined as the newest member.

@@MaddyReactions Scott and Kirstin apparently were a grade senior to Mitch... and went to HS in Arlington Tx.... about 60 minutes from here. I read where Mitch had to cut class his Senior year in HS to join them in the acapella contest, I've never met them, so I don't really know. I also heard that this video was made after they were dropped by the label that signed them.... and they shot this one piece at a time in a closet LOL! If I remember correctly, this video won them a "Grammy".

"That bass" is courtesy of Avi Kaplan who has been known to blow out speakers when they performed live. Kevin Olusola is their beatboxer who is also a talented tenor, plays the cello, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. This cover won the Grammy for best production, with a budget of only $400, and a week during which Avi's closet was their sound booth.

Your right on the mark asking if they were in a high school choir together. In fact, Scott, Kirsty and Mitch literally were. All three went to high school together and were in choirs and sung together all the time. After Scott and Kirsty's freshman year in college they entered a NBC show called the "Sing off" which was an acapella group competition. To be in the show, they added Avi(bass) and Kevin(beatboxing), which are stories in theirselves. They won the competition, moved to LA to begin their group, 3 grammys, 2 platium, 2 gold albums and 6 billion KZbin views later MaddyReactions finds them.

Another PTX newbie falling into the rabbit hole! I love it! I'm one of the Pentaholics that have been with them since the beginning, as I discovered them on Season 3 of The Sing Off. I HIGHLY suggest you look for Pentatonix Sing Off Season 3, and watch all of those videos. That will show you where and how they got their start, and how innovative they were even back then. Pentatonix truly revolutionized the A Capella scene and paved the way for groups like Home Free (Season 4 winners of the Sing Off, a country vocal band with an excellent sound), Voice Play (a group that has had some member changes, but has become another innovative vocal band) and Filharmonic (a Filipino group, also from Sing Off Season 4, along with Voice Play and Home Free). You should probably also know, this was the second video they produced after winning the Sing Off in Season 3. Their first, was the Radioactive cover. At this point, they had been together for maybe a year (if you include their time in the Sing Off). As someone else mentioned, they are just THAT good. I also highly recommend you check out their Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Many people told them it couldn't be done - a group with no instruments singing a song with no lyrics. It was their second grammy. That's the one thing Pentatonix is known for: pushing the boundaries and coming up with arrangements that most would say can't be done.

Congratulations on finding Pentatonix. Yes they have been singing together for years! Kirstie, Scott (tall, blonde) and Mitch (black hair high tenor voice) have been friends since they were young children (Kirstie and Mitch when they were 8, Scott and Mitch when they were 8 and Kirstie and Scott when they were 10). The three of them sang together in high school. In 2011 they decided to enter the a cappella singing contest 'The Sing-off' and they needed at least five members so they found their Beatboxer Kevin (the one with the vizor on!) on KZbin where he was beatboxing and playing the cello and they found their bass singer Avi through a friend of a friend. They won the Sing Off and got a Sony record contract but Sony dropped them after a couple of weeks because they didn't think a cappella music was marketable. They decided to go for it on their own and started their own KZbin channel. 12 years later and only one member change (Avi left the group in 2017 amicably for personal reasons - his mum was very unwell- and he was replaced with Matt Sallee who is also awesome!). They now have over 20 million KZbin subscribers, around 13 best-selling albums, 3 Grammy's (the first one was for this Daft Punk Medley!), and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They have a catalogue of over 200 songs. They are best known for their covers (Hallelujah has had over 700 million views on KZbin!) and for their Christmas music but their originals music is incredible and much under-rated. They all have brilliant solo projects (and Avi does too!) and they encourage each other but have an agreement that Pentatonix will always come first. They were semi finalists in the Masked Singer USA recently and they have sung the Star Spangled Banner at a sports' event. They tour all round teh worls and I saw them in May this year in London. UK having been a 'Pentaholic' since their Sing-off day in 2011. They are just incredible. Each of them has an incredible unique voice and together they are magical. They cover many different styles including: pop, rock, hip hop, musical theatre, a bit of country, world music, rap, EDM, dance, etc so there really is something for everyone. As a PTX newbie I would always recommend Hallelujah, their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, The Prayer, if you like EDM their original Love again is brilliant and it has a cool alien Steampunk vibe! Great reaction!! This group is awesome. They actually won their first Grammy with this video. They have won 2 more so far (Jolene with Dolly Parton and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) and just this year were awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Ptx has so many covers and also original works as well. Run to You and Love Again are two of my favorite originals thus far. I am actually going to see them in concert next weekend at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia. I hope you check out their other covers (upgrades) as well. There are so many that are recommended but some popular ones are Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Sound of Silence, Mad World, Amazing Grace, The Prayer, and the list goes way beyond this. One last bit of info....you had asked how they started out. They actually started out with 3 that went to high school together and formed an A Cappello group (Kirsti, Mitch, Scott). After high school, they wanted to Audition for a show called The Sing-Off (Season 3) and knew that they needed something extra for their group. They found their beatboxer (Kevin) on KZbin and their Bass (Avi) through, I believe a mutual friend. They won and this launched their career. The only group member that changed is Avi, their bass. He left to do his own work and Matt was recruited to replace him.

Ooooo! A Pentatonix newbie! How exciting! It was especially great that you are familiar with Daft Punk, because some reactors who don't know them aren't clear that this is a medley. Pentatonix does terrific mash-ups, and their transitions are so seamless that it can be hard to tell where one song ends and the next begins. One of my favourites is their fast-paced, one-take MJ tribute, "The Evolution of Michael Jackson." It's an oldie of theirs, but it gives you a great sense of their individual talents. Pretty much everything Pentatonix does is gold, and it's a rabbit hole worth exploring. Their original "Love Again" was somewhat like this one and rivals the Daft Punk Medley for my favorite. Their cover of Radioactive (by Imagine Dragons) with Lindsey Stirling is fantastic. If you haven't already, you should definitely check out Home Free (another excellent acapella group), and Teddy Swims.

Home Fry here. No question of which group is better but give credit where credit is due. They knocked this one out of the park check out their The Prayer and Amazing Grace. Two other ones are Bohemian Rhapsody and sound of Silence. Home Free sings circles around them, but they are truly talented in their own right.

Pentatonix is part of the "Big Three" of American acapella bands (and the most popular overall). The other two are Home Free and Voiceplay. All three bands are incredible, and do a wide range of musical genres. That being said, Pentatonix tends to be a bit more pop, Home Free tends to be more country/blues, and Voiceplay are the "theatre kids, and tend to do video games/disney/rock). It really comes down to taste. I like them all, but after several years of listening, I'm into Voiceplay the most. But you can't go wrong with any of these bands. You'll have many, many hours of enjoyment listening to all of them should you so choose.

I was late to the party, too; I only discovered Pentatonix last September. Pentatonix is the only a cappella band that's ever won a Grammy, except they've actually won three ("Daft Punk Medley" was their first Grammy winner). They're also the only a cappella band with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Pentatonix recommendations: • "Imagine" (the official video) • "The Prayer" • "Bohemian Rhapsody" (the official video) • "Run To You" (an original, written by Avi and Kevin) • "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy" (their second Grammy winner) • "Jolene" (a collaboration with Dolly Parton, and their third Grammy winner) • "O Come All Ye Faithful" • "Sound of Silence" • "Hallelujah" Pentatonix appeared on _The Sing-Off_ throughout the third (2011) season, eventually winning it. All of those performances are still available on KZbin and are well worth watching, preferably in order, and preferably including the synopsis at the beginning, the judges' comments, and whatever interviews they may have done afterwards. Pentatonix History…..composed by Alan Freeman They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair), true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an acappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only acapella group with a star! Things you need to know because if you get these wrong “Pentaholics” will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

I think one of their most beautiful creations is their rendition of "Mary Did You Know", perhaps best saved for the Christmas season. And when that season comes don't miss Home Free's astonishing a cappella Christmas songs (e.g. "Do You Hear What I Hear" and "O Holy Night"). Pentatonix and Home Free won their respective seasons of NBC's "The Sing Off", and the groups are good friends. In fact Pentatonix's Avi Kaplan collaborated with Home Free on their "Ring of Fire" video. He and Tim Foust bring some serious bass.

The woman is Kirstin (also called Kirstie, which rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado. Kirstie is the only woman in Pentatonix. She sings everything from a low alto through coloratura soprano, the highest soprano range, and has fantastic whistle notes on top of that. The guy who keeps singing "One more time" is Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), contratenor. Mitch has a range of just over six octaves but is most comfortable in the upper part of his range. He's known for the ethereal beauty of his voice. He switches seamlessly between chest voice, mixed voice, head voice, and falsetto, and he and Kirstie are uncertain which of them can sing higher, though they both agree that Kirstie's whistle notes are better than Mitch's. The guy with white hair in this video is Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. (Normally Scott is a blond, but he'd been experimenting with bleaching his hair shortly before they made this video). When describing a man's vocal range, the term "lyric" is used to denote a range that's actually greater than the nominal range. In Scott's case this means that his range begins somewhere in the middle of a normal bass range on the low end and extends upward through most of a normal tenor range. Scott can and does take over the bass harmony line when the bass is singing a solo. These three, Mitch, Kirstie, and Scott, grew up together in Arlington, Texas, where they formed a trio that performed at school functions and sometimes appeared on local television. They named their group "The Trio." For this reason the three of them are still referred to by pentaholics (Pentatonix fans) as "the trio," and the trio is the heart of Pentatonix. Scott and Kirstie graduated from high school in 2010 and each went off for a year of college. In 2011, when Mitch was about to graduate, Scott suggested that The Trio might want to compete on _The Sing-Off,_ an a cappella competition show that ran on NBC, and Kirstie and Mitch agreed. But then they found out that _The Sing-Off_ had a size requirement; bands must contain at least five members. The Trio needed two new members and a new name. Scott's friend Ben Bram suggested that they'd do well to add a rhythm section - a bass and a beatboxer. For a bass he suggested a guy he knew named Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan. Avi is the bearded guy with corn rows in his hair. He's a lyric bass. Avi is an operatically trained basso profundo, but his range extends upward to about the middle of a normal tenor range. Avi is also the only member of Pentatonix who is no longer with the band; he left in 2017 for a variety of personal reasons. He has since gone on to have a very successful solo career; I highly recommend subscribing to his KZbin channel: youtube.com/@AviKaplanMusic For a beatboxer Ben didn't know anyone to suggest, so the trio went to KZbin and typed in "beatboxer." The first hit they got was a viral video of a black guy playing a cello and beatboxing at the same time. I won't go into all the drama about what was necessary for Kevin to join them or this will become too long, but join them Kevin did, which brings us to the fifth member of Pentatonix. Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth), beatboxer extraordinaire. There may be a better beatboxer than Kevin, but if so I've never encountered him or her. Kevin is generally too busy being the entire percussion section to sing, but when he does he has a lovely tenor voice that occasionally dips into the uppermost reaches of baritone, and he's known for the beauty of his falsetto. He's also a pretty good rapper. Kevin has perfect pitch. He's classically trained on piano, saxophone, and cello. He beatboxes while playing the cello, a technique he calls "celloboxing." He performed at Carnegie Hall twice when he was a teenager, once on saxophone and once on cello. He has a premed degree from Yale and had been accepted to Yale Medical School before he decided to become a professional musician instead of a brilliant surgeon. He speaks five languages fluently: English, French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin Chinese. He's one of the kindest people in the world, and when he laughs he makes the whole planet seem like a brighter place. In late 2017 or early 2018 (depending on how you figure it) Avi was replaced with Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. Matt is another black guy; you'll see him in other videos. Oh, and the name Pentatonix? They named the band for the pentatonic scale, a scale with five tones, just as Pentatonix has five singers. In other words, it's a fancy way of saying they're The Quintet. 😂

You have to react to more of their songs, as they are really amazing. And yes, they have been around since '11 and the 3 higher voices has known each other from school. The bass and the beatboxer joined in '11, although about 5-6 years ago they had a change. Avi(the bass) left(on good terms) and they got a new one in, who has equally good, deep bass voice. They are still around, and I think they were on a tour last year, If I remember correctly from what I recently read myself. Alsot recent years they have made their own music and not just covers...
