You can be lucky nobody found or reported the bag sitting there alone for hours. If they did it would have been gone, in order to get it you would have had to show up at the police station in the airport. They definitely would have wanted to see your ID and as well your ticket/boarding pass etc. It amazes me how friendly and helpful all those people are. Here in Germany people constantly do not believe me how friendly the people in the US are. In Germany you would most certainly not get any help.
