The McRib is far from a farm-to-table pork sammy, and it contains a couple questionable ingredients: Namely, polysorbate 80 and mono and diglycerides. But the bigger problems are the high amounts of sodium, sugar and saturated fat that it delivers, and that’s before fries and a Coke. Ingredients in a McRib sandwich With that out of the way, let’s put the McRib under a microscope. Here’s a list of ingredients, drawn from McDonald’s website (source PDF). McRib bun: Enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, yeast, high fructose corn syrup, contains 2% or less of the following: salt, corn meal, wheat gluten, soybean oil, partially hydrogenated soybean and/or cottonseed oils, dextrose, sugar, malted barley flour, cultured wheat flour, calcium sulfate, ammonium sulfate, soy flour, dough conditioners (sodium stearoyl lactylate, datem, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, mono- and diglycerides, ethoxylated mono- and diglycerides, monocalcium phosphate, enzymes, guar gum, calcium peroxide), calcium propionate (preservative), soy lecithin. McRib pork patty: Pork, water, salt, dextrose, preservatives (BHA, propyl gallate, citric acid). McRib sauce: Water, high fructose corn syrup, tomato paste, distilled vinegar, molasses, natural smoke flavor (plant source), food starch-modified, salt, sugar, spices, soybean oil, xanthan gum, onion powder, garlic powder, chili pepper, sodium benzoate (preservative), caramel color, beet powder. Did you get all that? McRib has 70 ingredients, and they’re not that bad (in terms of being natural). But we see some red flags: high fructose corn syrup, to start. And also azodicarbonamide. Azodicarbonamide, a flour bleaching agent, is used in the production of foamed plastics. Yes, the McRib bun contains an ingredient also found in gym mats.

The F1 event (Fiasco #1 event 😉) is impacting the area at the heart of "The Strip" so it shouldn't be unusual to see only a few people in the Aria's shopping mall. A walk-thru after Thanksgiving (mid-December-ish?) would be a better indicator of retail spending activity.

Flapped my wings from Wisconsin/Ohare into LA basin to spend time with West Coast family (couple of sons, daughter in law, 2 new grandkids (that are super cute) and continue my cancer surgery recovery. Older son and I drove over to the Orange Circle - always a favorite spot going back to when I lived here - and walked a bit (that son also went to Chapman Law school). Found a very reasonably priced place for dinner at one of the brew houses in the Circle area. Football on. Relatively busy, good service. But, we had the cheapest thing on the menu (burgers) and a big Bavarian pretzel as an entree, he had a couple of their stout micro brews and I had a Coke Zero. Excellent food quality and the Bavarian pretzel and its dips were amazing. But, just for that, including tip, it was over $80 bucks. Who can afford to do that on a semi regular basis anymore? Not me. Think of it. The price of 4 meals out like that could pay to fly from LA to Chicago or vice versa one way with money to spare. Food and restaurant prices are crazy these days.

South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, California (very near where Dan lives) is open and active (also throw in Fashion Island in neighboring Newport Beach). Same hi-end brand shops as you see in this video. If any unit in the mall is closed (besides the old Sears building) its due to a remodel being done for a future tenant.

Just a curiosity. I know of a company that has an unusual hiring process. The company recruits online for lets say a welder. They get the applications and discard those who dont make the cut. They schedule interviews, then make cuts, then second interviews. If they pass second interviews they are invited to a 6 week paid orientation in a classroom setting. All meals and lodging paid. During this they observe what type of person that you are, your performance etc. After 6 weeks you go home. Either you get a confidential offer sheet that you do not discuss with other employees or you get a better luck next time letter. Once you are hired, younare on probation fir 1 year. During that year you are paired with a Mentor employee in the same position to learn how things are done. You do not produce anything individually for the company for the year. After a year you either pass probation or you walk. If retained you are given another Confidential offer sheet. If you accept, you will likely end up with a long career with the company. I wont say what company that this is but they are very thorough and have virtually no quality issues that I have ever heard of.

I was going to lease the new Mustang Crossover, the Black Friday Payments would be low, the tax rebate , huge, the vehicle drove great, I even insisted on driving it up a steep hill. Finally, we we got down to the down payment, they wanted $11,000 down for a 3 year lease! I told them , in that case, I will just keep my other car ! Crazy !
