That happened to me after 4 decades with a major computer company. What I learned was if your working for a company that starts to restructure or downsizing or whatever they want to call it LEAVE! It’s better to leave on your own terms. I seen the signs 10 or 15 yrs before but was told I had nothing to worry about. After I started in a different field I realized I had been over worked and under paid for years. So if your company is not doing good don’t wait thinking that things will get better. CEOs are just bean counters. One of my sons was starting to go through the same things I seen. I told him to get out. He did leave and the whole building he was in closedown 3 months later.

Ya'll are so great. I found your channel while considering a Kubota for our small mountain land. (We now have a LX2610.) I have huge respect for you rolling with this hard situation. Back in the 80's, my dad told me, "If you work hard and make yourself valuable to a good company, they'll take care of you for the rest of your life." In the 90's, my dad (as Exec VP of personnel) was "involuntarily retired" during a merger because he was trying to stand up for the employees. Today, no one is more important than the mighty bottom line. And that's really sad. I feel your anger. I pray that your new career is MORE successful than your old one!!

I had a similar job situation that pushed me to start my own marketing agency. We are celebrating our 5th year in business this month and have grown from 2 to 6 employees. But best of all, I LOVE what I do. I might never have chosen this path had I not faced a career crisis, but I see it like Joseph of the Bible that his brothers meant it for evil but God meant it for good. God is good and he even uses the mistakes of others (and us) in his good plan.

I feel your pain. I was with a company for over 25 years and built up a department full of people and help structure the success of the company turning my efforts into what made the company successful and then after the company was sold the new owners decide that my entire department is no longer needed. It hurt. I wasn't being paid well but I felt like there was no way I would loose my job because I had put my heart and soul into it's success and hadn't given any reason for the company to let me go. But in the end big business just doesn't care about people. I definitely have PTSD from my experience but went right back out and rejoined the work force. I wish I had the courage to do as you have done to go "self employed". I know it isn't easy but I now feel the pressure of working for someone else and feel like I am subject to the whim that I may just not be needed on day and I feel this is no way to live. Good on ya man, I hope you and your family can have a successful run at it!

Thanks for posting this 1 year update. I often wondered how things are going for you and Ann. I was let go from a job that I thought I would retire from. 9/11 spoiled that. The private company was diverse with companies in a few states and forced to cut 10% of their employees from all companies. It was a short exit, I was told about the layoff and escorted out of the building! I did get some severance pay. That was pre-KZbin days. I bounced around with a few different companies. I finally retired at 66 (10 years ago) from my last job as a facilities manager/technical director, which like you, I loved. I subscribed to your channel after watching your video on changing the oil on the B2601, it was down to earth, simple, easy to understand. We have 4 acres in North Idaho, live with our oldest son, his wife and their 2 children (grade school age). We bought the property 4 years ago that had a 1960's small house and a couple sheds with lots of downed trees and debris littering the property. I decided to buy a tractor because I could see the value in having a machine to keep up the land (my wife, at the time was not too sure, but has changed her mind). We don't use it everyday, but when needed it's right there in the tractor/wood shed). We have about 30 goats (half are babies, soon to be sold or given away) and about 20 chickens producing farm fresh free range eggs which we sell to locals. Keep creating great content, we'll be here for you!

Huh.. Well, I was seriously injured Jan 03. Wasn't able to walk but still worked from home. I moved to TRI in Tennessee two months ago. Actually told my job I was moving and they let me go. I didn't have anything lined up but moved anyway. Why? Because life is short. My friends thought I was nuts. Maybe so? But dreams don't come true unless you go and make them happen. Two months later and I have a place with a mountain view and a new work from home job while I still recover. I'm here living in the places I thought I'd only retire to. This is not bragging. It's to motivate people to not sit around waiting to live your dream. GO DO IT! Only thing holding you back is you. It takes work. But would you rather live off of someone instead of yourself? NO! Your value is diminishing quickly after a year. Your contracts dry up and so do your skills. My workplace keeps taking things away because of "costs" but brag about record profits every few months. 🤔🤔 Insurance went up every year but nobody has gotten a raise in 3 years kinda stuff. Cafeteria gets taken away. Staff members don't get replaced so everybody just gets more work every so often. etc. "D" Moves for sure.

Great video, youtube algorithm for the win. I recently made a video on my channel about losing my job that I had for 28 years. I, like you, felt so secure in my job and had a clear record, but the company recently lost a contract with a major mobile company, and as a result, my department was eliminated. I did receive a severance package, but it was nowhere near enough for the 28 years I gave to the company. I feel betrayed but understand that business is business. Now, I am struggling to find a new job to get me through until retirement, and I have Full-time KZbin Content Creator on my mind, wondering if it is a viable option or even possible for me. While I search for my next opportunity, I am focusing on my channel. Your words on this video are an inspiration to me, making me believe it is possible. I am now a subscriber to your channel. Colleen and I are rooting for you of course! Congratulations on one year of freedom. God gives us what we need which is not always what we want. The harshness of the experience it’s probably God’s way of ensuring that you focus on this new opportunity fully resident looking for employment similar to your previous job. My predictions are as follow: 1. Your increased frequency of content along with your unique presence and gentle manner dramatically will increase your audience. 2. In a short time, you’ll be swamped with offers to feature seriously Equipment on your channel. 3. You will wonder why you didn’t do this sooner. Bona Fortuna! The Joyces P.S. Jon Ritter help me change the name of my channel as I prepare (in about a year) to launch my own channel. It is still me and Colleen, however.

You're doing a great job. I enjoy your learn as we go approach. I understand you'd take better equipment but I really do think that would hurt your views. I don't need a 10k wood splitter so I likely won't watch you reviewing one. I do have a 1k splitter and I will watch you review competing models as I will need to buy again at some point.

Companies just don’t care about their employees anymore. All they care about is the bottom dollar.

But, if your company wanted to hire you back with a pay raise would you take it??

Funny, I've had those day dreams. At this point, I think not. I've lost trust and respect for the leadership there.

It's funny kids nowadays don't give a notice and we all get pi$$ed at my job but now I guess it's like your case these kids kids feel they won't give me a notice to lay me off or fire me so we'll just quit. I'm glad you've made the best of it Ed and being over 50 makes it souch harder. The Dems want to raise retirement age but yet we have no job security after 50 we are old and kinda used up to start over and go like a bull. Keep on cluttering the barn, garage, forest, garden etc ..

@GaryVee has confirmed that your "content" must come from the heart. You need to be sharing with NO expectation of return - and the audience will respond (the LAW of reciprocity). Your viewers are NOT the source of revenue, but the DOOR to opportunities that you would never find without their help.

I really enjoy your videos and always look forward to the next one. You mentioned that Ann referred to your situation as a “Blessing and a Gift” That sounds like The Lord has Blessed you with a wonderful wife. Thank you for sharing.
