When people say that you are being emotional, they are really saying that you have a habit of being *ruled* by emotions. All of your actions are based on how you feel rather than rational thought. Which is a bad thing because your emotions can change just because you didnt drink enough water or you had a bad sleep. You might be angry over something that makes no logical sense and then act on it. Think about the joke that some men make about how some women will get mad at their man just because she had a dream that he was cheating, even though he's faithful in real life. The most optimal way to live is to have a good balance of logic and emotions, that's how you get rational thinking. I have taken breaks in a relationship. Usually it’s because something happened to make me question if I want to stay with this person. I use a break to distance myself and get some perspective. I don’t talk to anyone, I don’t look for new people. I just spend some time with myself and my thoughts. I write down my thoughts and feelings as they come and usually discuss them with my partner when I figure it out. Taking a break doesn’t always mean you don’t want to be with them and it certainly isn’t always an excuse to cheat. Sometimes some space is needed and that’s okay.

People go on a break for many of reasons. One of which I've done myself and its like a threat to the other person because they keep acting out or doing something stupid which now today that I'm older and wiser I know it was never gonna fix anything. But at the time that was the idea. Get into argument, say "I need a break, we need some time apart, I still love you but I think we need to stop dating for a little bit and leave each other alone (or w/e)" Then a week or so later, loyalty was tested amongst other things, get back together and hope things are better. I've gone on a break from a friend before several times and we're still going several years strong as friends so while that isn't exactly the same as a relationship I hope I can add a little insight. Sometimes when you're constantly with someone or you're going through something as an individual you just need to separate for a short period of time to sort yourself out or give yourselves time to miss each other. The longest my friend and I separated was a few months, the shortest was a few days. It really helped us, I grew as a person because I had to reflect on my own actions and when we talked again I owned up to my mistakes and worked to fix them which is a pattern I've kept. In romantic relationships if you're actually trying to make it work not just cheat for free you normally set up boundaries like "we can't see other people at all" or "dates are ok but no sex". A couple might do the second thing if they're trying to see if the relationship spark is still there, but communication is the most important thing in any relationship scenario
