Swords are called nails in Hollow Knight because "nail" is an archaic word for sword! It derives from Nægling, one of Beowulf's swords, which means... nail. It's a bit of a case of a specific object's name coming to be used for an entire category of object. It suits Hollow Knight's world really well because of the old, flowery language everyone uses.
@titan4257 Жыл бұрын
To be honest I think it's because they're bugs and it's meant to imply the scale.
@Electrosa Жыл бұрын
@@titan4257 Nothing else in the world of Hallownest is treated this way, because the story isn't told from the perspective of someone bigger looking in; it's all told completely diegetically from the perspective of the insects who live there. Regular structures are called buildings, huts, castles, halls, etc. Tiso's shield isn't called, say, a penny, Cornifer's quills are still called quills and not like... splinters, and so forth. It's a fun language choice to fit in with the almost Shakespearean way everyone talks.
@titan4257 Жыл бұрын
@@Electrosa I've noticed the same thing but I don't doubt that's what was intended by calling them nails. Hornet's weapon is called a needle, as another example.

SPOILERS FOR HOLLOW KNIGHT LORE I think the biggest point for me and the majority of people in the story, is the reveal of just how many siblings were killed trying to find a hollow knight, there were millions, all dead and haunting the abyss. Than the knight the plae king thought was hollow was really a failure because he had one will, one thought; make his father proud.
@Viennery10 ай бұрын
That’s kind of the running theme throughout the game, NONE of the vessels are pure. The dream of a pure vessel was just that, a dream. Even Ghost would have cracked one day, because he clearly has will(the player can choose different endings), as well as developing an affection for his sister, as proven by pantheon Nosk using the image of the person Ghost cares most about. This is why I believe that Zote is also a vessel. He represents the most impure vessel, and even his asymmetrical mask is in reference to this. He has a mind to think, as we can read his thoughts. He has a will to break, and makes bad choices. And he has a voice to cry suffering, because he never shuts the fuck up
@Niiloc-kg9cv6 ай бұрын

Breaks my heart to see an artist contemplate wether or not their artistic rendition of a thing is artistic enough, really does. Know what I make? Little clay cats. Know what they aren’t? Artistically creative or expressive, they’re just little cats. Sleeping, sitting, playing. Just cats. They don’t make a point or express any emotion or tell any kind of story, just kitty cats But you know what they are? Cute little clay cats, lovingly handmade by me because I like cats and I like seeing cats do cute things like sleep and sit and play. I don’t think you made this sculpture to make a point, or tell us anything. You made it because you like the character and wanted to spend time making the character for yourself

YO SAME WITH THE BACK RIDGES! I never did finish my sculpture of them, but something that I personally love a lot about this game is that the simple artstyle allows for a lot of personal interpretations to shine through when doing more realistic art of them. I went for a sort of xenomorph body with lots of lapping chitin plates and back spines because I thought the idea of something that looked like a monstrous, terrifying creature actually being fundamentally good and kind at heart (even though they shouldn't be) fit the lore well. I love your interpretation too, it's a really awesome blend of human and bug that looks neat as hell :) (Also I feel terrible to mention this given how much trouble the cloak section was, but they're actually missing one arm- the Radiance rotted it off)

We don't really know what's happening when the Hollow Knight is stabbing himself, for me there are 3 main explanations : 1 - The Radiance is controlling the Hollow Knight and forcing it to kill itself so she can be free. 2 - The Hollow Knight stabs itself to die and end its pain caused by the infection within it. 3 - The Hollow Knight stabs itself because it tries to kill the Radiance within it, or maybe to weaken itself so The Knight (us) can defeat it more easily. I feel like it's the thirs one, because it makes the Hollow Knight more heroic and makes its sacrifice even more tragic.
