@aenigmatic01 Hi 30 year old Korean here. Don't listen to this guy. He's only showing you half the picture. Work hours depend on your employer and department leadership. Also can vary if you're trying to meet deadlines. The classic example of the toxic workplace where they artificially extend your work hours is dead. I have personally never even seen what this guy is talking about. I work for a shipping company and we work 9 to 6. One hour lunch. The latest I left the office was 730 and that's rare. All of my family and friends can attest to this at their jobs as well.

Dude, you are awesome. From the perspective of an American who now lives in Canada, some of us see this and understand the difficulties faced by Korea's young people. It is much the same in Japan, as well, though more so in Tokyo. The suicide rates amongst your young and middle aged are heartbreaking. When Western people talk about this culture, we refer to it as Consumerism and an old fashioned phrase is "keeping up with the Jones's." While the culture is less severe, here, it does exist. Like these 700,00 Koreans, many here are fed up with it and doing our best to say no. Many young people are focusing on experiential, rather than material wealth. It is a start. Keep up the good work.

I'm in the U.S. and also worked many long hours, which makes it extremely difficult to raise a family or have any kind of life outside of work. I am fortunate that my 2 children turned out well despite working long hours and also traveling a lot for work - sometimes months at a time. I sympathize with them, as it truly does result in burnout and does no good for the workers' mental health well being (nor physical well being either). Also, as you mentioned in a different video, I could not do lunch out every day with coworkers and especially not after work drinking and meals out more than maybe once a month or once a quarter. Most of the time, I packed lunch and worked through lunch in order to get my work done. Occasionally, I went out and ate in my car, just to be away from the office and coworkers for a bit. Anyway, I appreciate your videos and information. Thank you for sharing.

Western countries deal with this same mentality too, especially 30-50 years ago. It seems like there is a shift in mentality now where some people realized life cannot be all about working, that’s a miserable life & so they downsize, move out of big cities, live on farms, live in vehicles and move to more affordable countries and work remotely, to have a better balanced and more affordable life. The wages earned do not sufficiently cover the cost of living & that forces people to work longer hours and/or multiple jobs. Governments need to step in and mandate better wages for people and freezes on living costs, or things will only get worse… corporations are too greedy now, their profit margin demands too big. I also think social media has had a huge impact on people, seeing the unrealistic fake lives people post online, makes people self conscious about their own lives. Unfortunately I don’t know that S Korea has the luxury of time for people to come to this realization.

Thank you for your thoughts. Here in Canada very different system. Now, the younger generation can apply anywhere and they never stick to their jobs. Is it boredom??? I don't really know the cause but here if you leave your employment you do not receive any help from the Canadian gvt. (Money wise) If you are fired, the gvt. will help you get back on your feet. It is called employment insurance. You cannot live on this money forever. It is to help you. If you cannot work because of certain issues, you will receive social insurance. But if you tell people that you are on it, you are being judged very quickly. So here in Canada, the rich become richer and the middle class I grew up in, is not doing so great either 😢

It's no wonder that the suicide rate is so high in Korea. I also think the education system is terrible. These kids go to school and study long hours as well missing out on social/family time. The family also pressures the students to excel above their classmates. Now, the country is suffering from a low birth rate because people can't afford to have children with the cost of living and/or the pressures from work.

You're right. People have to reevaluate what it means to have a successful life. I think people often dismiss the importance of personal happiness. You could be making all the money in the world, but if you're not happy, how could you describe yourself as successful? It's unfortunate, but commercialism has managed to convince people that owning the most expensive luxury items is what's most important, when it really isn't. And this forces many people to live beyond their means, which forces you to hold onto that high-paying job, even if it brings you nothing but misery. I would always choose to have a modest income and live with good mental health than to be rich but stressed all the time.

Society is passing out bad financial advice, live on credit, spend more than you make. That is the worst advice ever no matter where you live. Who cares about what kind if car you drive, if you own it and it gets you where you want to go, there is value in that. If you own your own home that is an accomplishment, that is a big investment and one that can have the biggest payout if sold when the time is right. Bags, clothes might look nice but it has no value, and when you’re young and starting out you need to make smart investments and choices. At least if you’re making good money, spend it on things that are going to hold value for you when you’re older.

But are you really average? You English is perfect, now how many Koreans speak English, even if limited, or how many young Koreans speak English? I want to visit Korea some day - but I don't think I will learn enough Korean to even get by as a tourist. So working at big companies is fine, but you can have less influence, there are a lot of stakeholders to decisions, in smaller companies you can develop better friendships, have more influence, be less of a tiny cog in a big machine that you get in very large companies. Korea has strong traditions but some of those need to change to move forward and be successful. Move on from the chaebols being the rulers and allow smaller and medium businesses to get ahead. Working 12 hours days is really counterproductive, build stronger team relationships, make 8 hours count, don't burn out your employees, appreciate and nurture your employees - they are the most important part of the company. A company should not be a fiefdom, instead a collaboration.

I have been studying the Korean culture and language for the better part of 10 years now, sometimes from outside, sometimes from inside. I love the process. As it stems from different comments on the videos of this gentleman, there are few different things that the government should do but they are huge. - Render illegal; lobbying activities from the Chaebols, to allow laws about unpaid overtime, maternity/paternity leave, obligation to develop in other cities(Daejeon, Mokpo, Ulsan, Pohang), obligation for the Chaebols to financially compensate every employee each time they have a child, to pass. - Render illegal; foreign real-estate investments driving speculation, until some market stabilization happens. i.e.; every couple must be able to afford decent, family oriented housing - Modify the 전세 system, that put pressure on every young couple About the pressure from what the parents say is what it takes to be successful. Young Koreans have to realize that the values and beliefs of their parents were formed from a time that have passed. A time where the societal values and beliefs might have been in line with history but isn't anymore. Young Koreans need to take the time to ponder on those values passed down from parents and re-evaluate each and every one of them, and form more coherent, new ones for themselves in their time, their generation. I am not saying that they should get rid of Confucianism altogether, as there are good elements in there. It doesn't mean disrespect for your elderly members of your society, it means you must live your life on your own terms. For a metaphoric comparison, when I think about the pivotal moments in history in Korea, the Gwangju Uprising comes to mind, young Koreans should remember that it is kids of their age that met with the moment, not the government, not the parents or elderly people. So if they are not contempt about their society, they should change it and not wait for others. Of course I am not talking about an actual uprising but more about political action. Their are new things happening right now in Korea, extreme liberalism, drug use and trafficking and these will only deter you from your goals. South Korea is in the hands of its youth. Good luck
