@@LxrdSwift I was a little perplexed. Certainly not ego. Just like Luc seemed to be getting at is that over time you develop your focus better. I know for me, when I was in my 20s, my priorities were much different and my reason for pursuing things have changed which changed how I approach a project. I only wish I had started working on creative projects sooner would be my only regret. I almost would say it is the opposite of ego for me because there is always someone better, faster, or more creative. After over retiring from over 20 years in the military, one thing I feel confident about is the respect for the different qualities that a team can bring together. I certainly have gone through my lone wolf times in feeling I could do it better or faster while in my 20s, but better or faster did not equate to quality or emotional connection which is where different views and styles are so great. Being older has helped me look at the broader picture about how everything comes together and benefits everyone rather than just the bottom line or final result. A motto for a non-profit I worked with is "The path is the destination." The path and the process have become more enjoyable than a rush to the finish line if that makes sense. Thanks for your response.

The market is not saturated, you just have to have good ideas, nowadays it doesn't really matter what you shoot with, what matters is what ideas you have
@soundsbitter
@soundsbitter 22 күн бұрын
I got so many ideas but idk when I can get a camera and lens. I’m a skater so off the bat I would film skating and just movement and just implement my vision as I learn how to use the camera and how to edit proper. Some people have said to me that filming its “too hard” and “too expensive “ and I think that’s a cop out and maybe it’s just cause they do not have a passion and love for something they can actually film . 🤷‍♂️ idk but i refuse to let the price of cameras and the fact others think you gotta go to school to make short films or create something that can be a new way of expression for the artist.

@@soundsbitter Don't despair, Roman Polanski shot his first film with cameras so weak that a simple phone these days is thousands of times better performing! So, it is very important to have people who want to perform in front of the cameras, all you have to do is to be able to create a very good story! So, people, spaces and a lot of desire to work! And you don't have to have thousands of dollars worth of cameras and lenses, people are important, creating a captivating story, locations and lots and lots of trust! I have been struggling for years to do what I set out to do, only now I managed to find people who believe in what I propose! It's very difficult, but if you manage to make the first good film, you will give in as you gather good people around you. I wish you success
@GhostStealth590

Even in rural areas it's oversaturated. The only option I have is to make my own video business by myself as all production houses in the surrounding 100 miles are gated and have their cliques (qualified or unqualified, who knows, they fill those roles though). If I had a partner or a friend or someone to help me, I'm sure we'd find success, but I'm pretty alone and my gear is not to the level justifying starting a business, filing for an LLC alone and hoping I can find workers, nor a space for operations aside from my mom's house. So lately it's been pretty bleak for the industry out here in rural towns.
@marius5498
@marius5498 20 күн бұрын
@@GhostStealth590 Nowadays it is no longer possible to say that equipment worth thousands of dollars is necessary, look for videos made only with the phone, honestly, it doesn't matter much with what, now it matters what emotions a video releases, unfortunately, most of them are jokes and short comedies filmed by a maximum of two people, usually life partners,..... so.... a masterpiece, a video at art level is an expression meant to create one or more feelings, imagine that you have to express in images a famous painting, aaa, one more thing, if you sit and don't film and just dream you won't get anywhere. Put yourself to work, it will pay off in the end, invent new shooting angles, invent new shadows, anything, any artistic invention needs practice, without practice you don't learn! Having said that, I wish you success.

Hey Luc. Enjoyed this video and I agree, it's all about relationships. And life experiences? I've got plenty! But I viewed your video from, perhaps, a very different perspective. I specialize in travel, with 93 countries under my belt, most of them multiple times. I freelanced for the New York Times Travel section for about 15 years, back when they had a budget, and also for many national magazines and newspapers. I started out in still photography, and about 11 years ago, added video to the mix. You talk about how, in some ways, the competition drops out, the longer you're in "the game." My issue is quite the opposite. It's my clients who are "dropping out" (retiring) and in some cases, dropping dead. Literally! So now, I'm confronting an entirely new gang of potential clients: a bunch of 20 and 30-somethings who are filling the rolls of PR people, art directors, ad agency people, etc...my typical clients, who I feel are reluctant to hire someone with vastly more experience than they, either because they feel, perhaps intimidated that I might know more than they, or perhaps feel I'm not up to the job, or they'd rather "hang" with someone their own age. I should add here, that I'm 80 (really!), and still actively working, and keeping up with the technology, and trends, and hardware. Well, most of it; I still can't bring myself to love vertical video. I don't really "have" to keep working, but I love what I do. Just not getting to do it as much as I would like. I shot a cruise ship in NY Harbor 2 weeks ago (I live in Florida), and shooting aerial video here (helicopter, not drone) next week. And I have to keep scratching the travel "itch." The past 18 months, I've been to India, Japan, and Kazakhstan. At least KZbin gives me an outlet (not monetized), and I can "hire" myself. But I've always enjoyed doing it for "real jobs." Enough ranting. Thanks for listening.

Coming from my own experience, it's bleak. I'm at Target to pay the bills barely and paying my student loans a month late each time because Target doesn't pay well. Combine that with all the people you met in college not wanting to connect or network, also sucky as you are literally the one-man band marching down this aisle of people telling you that you need to find something else or your work is "good, but also needs some of 'this'". Graduated with a BA in Film/Video Production from a very renown university, but instead of a job paying above 30k a year, I get sub-30k a year and mounting student loan debt. Fun times.

I’m 22 now, and I’ve been making films since I was 12 years old. (Recently, one of my films was selected for the program of my first film festival, and I’m just hoping more people will get the chance to see it.) Two weeks ago, I left my family and home to live on my own for the first time-and in an entirely different country, 2,580 kilometers away from home. It’s been both an exciting and challenging experience. Right now, I’m working in a slightly different field (I’m still doing video, but this field is not as creative as I’d like), and I’m hoping to return to filmmaking as soon as possible. In the meantime, I’m writing the script for my next film. Your calm, thoughtful, and expert advice keeps me coming back to your channel. The wisdom you gave about not "winning" anything is spot on. I was a software engineer for forty years and we used to say, "Programming is like pinball. The reward for doing it well is to be able to do it again." Happy Birthday and keep bringing us great content.

You’re a huge inspiration Luc! I can relate to everything you’ve said in this video, 2-3 years in but having combined that with fumbling around the world at the same time I’m finally coming to a clearer path with my filmmaking just as I turn 30 in a couple of months. Thanks for your great videos!

Going to go pursue being an aircraft mechanic. 10 years is a long time. But it’s ok. I’m fine with playing the long game. I know that when I’m 30, I will be so much better off. Thank you for the overall message of this video.

Your channel is pure YT-Gold, I am so happy this exists. I hear you and I am one of those dudes in his late 20ies who wants to make a living doing exactly what you do because I love it. I take this video and your newsletter as points of reference for me. Thank you so much for putting in the work and sharing this, for me personally, this is tremendously valuable.

Congratulations Luc, I really enjoyed watching that, You come across confident, grounded, knowledgeable and know how to tell it. Many relatable life topics - Me: 46 yrs old, I've only just gone full-time working in the field that has always been a side-line/weekend job. All profits, in honesty were spent on equipment upgrades. Each job has usually given me the excuse to buy the next thing I 100% need to succeed. My latest upgrade is a Canon R5 markii. Most memorable upgrade was glass: Canon's 50mm F1.2 back in 2016. Thanks again, great watching!

I'm 78 and a retired IA DP. I worked and loved docs as a director/cameraman for three decades. I taught at a major well-known film school for a few years. I wish I'd had this video back then. Good advice, every single word.

40! Holy smokes man, I'm in my 50's (no surgeries here yet!) and still feel like I'm struggling to get off the ground lol. I keep hoping to run into you in person, so I can tell you how much I like these videos in the flesh. I may have told my 20 year old self to perhaps go deeper into film/video production straight away, but my heart pushed me toward other creative avenues at the time.

Happy birthday Luc! This was all great to hear from someone with way more experience, I've kinda learned some of this the hard way lol but reassuring hearing it at the very least. I'm now 26 and always had the idea when I started taking this seriously 3 (coming up on 4) years ago that my approach was longevity over the instant likes & comments on social media, though it can be nice I guess lol I just recently started working on my first documentary and it's looking like it could potentially be a feature doc. Very nerve racking yet exciting at the same time, just enjoying the process and all the people I have been meeting along the way! Been taking lots of notes from you and AOD which have been super helpful on this new journey in documentary so thank you for all the advice you put out!
