Here in the US in Florida, any time I'm in the ER, they ask if I need an interpreter. I don't need one, but it's nice that they ask everyone if they need one

“But but, then I’d have to do my job 😢” Easier said than done in my experience, but I’d honestly make a complaint. Getting an interpreter is simple. Ironically my deaf friend struggles a ton to get an interpreter, and as you have experienced, often doesn’t get one. One of my other friends in Indian, haven’t lived here very long, so although my friend speaks pretty fluently, their parents don’t. Guess who can easily get an interpreter…. And if not, they always find an Indian member of staff to help. It’s ridiculous and kind of an inside joke that the HOSPITALS where injured, ill and disabled people tend to spend a lot of time at, can’t get adaptions such as an interpreter, or sometimes a wheelchair user accessible examination bed, but you go in healthy just unable to speak English and you’ll have multiple options to help you.

Please reach out to the Patient and Laision department at the hospital if you haven't done so already, and to your local healthwatch to let them know your mothers nhs trusts shortcomings. The Accessible Information Standards makes it LAW that all public health sectors MUST provide interpreters. Trusts have been sued before for failing to meet the standards. You shouldn't have to keep reminding them to book an interpreter. It should already be recorded and flagged under your mothers medical notes. Failing all that ask for the contact details for the Director of Accessibility and Inclusion, sometimes hospital have their directors name and details in view for patients to see. Hope this helps 😊 Kirsty from RNID

Its somethign that should be in demand job wise for even spoken languages and provided even if it means weird scheduling for appointments. I do know Interpreters may be expensive so idk if that factors in. Like Americas hospitals often arent paid enough and dotn out the money in the most ideal places. Idk not an excuse but a perspective

Do you interrupt for her? I live in America and if you don't speak English or don't understand medical stuff, you bring a friend or family, who does. idk you can get an interpreter for appt.

i think he is mainly frustrated because of course he is scheduled to be with her, but if he has to cancel last minute and can't go, how will she understand? also, he shouldn't have to go to his mums appointments. they are for his mum, not him. it's ridiculous how many times doctors/medical professionals just don't listen

I sign for her when there’s no one there to interpret, yes. But it’s a shame for Mum because she is unable to have privacy when it comes to anything medically related & that isn’t fair on her

I agree with the idea. you are right I just didn't know that it was part of the medical world. I've seen a translator with county buildings and like case management kind of appointments. I just didn't know that the Dr has a list of interpreters. Maybe it's my American mind but I feel like it's looked at like "it's your issue and you need to find a fix for it not us." Not that I agree with that but that's what I've seen.

Im British too, abd alrgough they definitely try to make these things an “us” problem, they have the resources to find an interpreter. It’s 100% possible. They may just have to call one in, which they should have done beforehand. I made a separate comment. I have 2 friends, one is deaf, and very, VERY rarely to the Drs/hospitals provide them an interpreter. The other, their Indian, their parents don’t speak English, so although they normally go with them to translate, they can easily get a translator, even if by phone, normally in person, and if they don’t have a translator around, they always manage to find a staff member who speaks the same language and can translate for them. Hospitals and Drs are mostly used by injured, sick or disabled people, so having an interpreter for a disability should be easier and more accessible than a translator. Most people who have a problem, will take a trusted person with them, if not for translating, for back up and we disabled people often get dismissed. But imagine you are forced to translate a more private medical issue through your child. It’s embarrassing, and demeaning.

Maybe you’ve already tried this but how about using ‘confidentiality’ as a reason you can’t sign for your mum. You being at all her appointments and being part of all medical conversations means she has no confidentiality. What if she had something she wanted to discuss with a doctor that she didn’t want you to know about? It is her absolute right to have all her medical information confidential. Maybe they would make more of an effort to provide an interpreter if you mentioned this. Just a thought.
