Even though I want to be one myself, I feel like the spotlight of appreciation is always on doctors, whereas nurses have to also work very hard, usually overtime, and in sometimes conditions that are really quite gross. I have huge respect for nurses!

Not true!!! I am a nurse... work very close with the doctors. Believe it or not 90 percent of patients say it’s the nurse who helps and cares for them. The doctors are far and few and are often never seeing the patient. We the nurses do the codes and call for orders and advocate for the patient. Doctors have their busy role.... nurses have theirs... goes hand in hand. We can not do what we do without each other.

Really! I got that little chip on my shoulder reminding me to not be too needy or be very demanding when I was admitted a week ago. Like god damn! I was thinking of how many psycho patients they have to deal with. Like I could see the near relief on my primary nurse's face, probably from what other doctors in the ER told her, that I was really calm. Little anxious, but good. The group of nurses I had in the ER when I had fluid drained from my lungs were relived too lol. Because they said that they get alot of young males who yell, shout, swear, etc. And I actually made them laugh explaining that was why women live longer than men. Because we can tolerate pain better.

In two years in going to be starting my path to becoming a doctor and all I can say is wow. I know doctors are given all the credit when it comes to health but if I'm honest it was a nurse that inspired me to want to be a doctor. I hope when I do finish that I'm not one of those type of doctors who do appreciate the nurses because they are truly amazing.

While I love trauma nurses, I really do, especially the ones in large centers that I can send complex patients to, please show a day in the life of a rural outpost nurse. We get the same traumas, albeit less frequently, but we maybe have xray and that is it. No doctors save the rare teleconference, and we have to keep people stable enough for the upwards or 6 hour transfer to a major center.

This is totally new for me that a nurse is allowed to do so many and "serious" things. Here in Germany they are only allowed to do simple things like bringing and cutting food, cleaning the dentures, taking blood, blood pressure, bringing the meds and besides bringing the patient to the toilet that's it, I guess. They also don't have to go to college/university. 3 years nurse education in a nurse school.
@hyosomoo1437

luticia Yeah, nursing in America is different. Those tasks are usually given to CNAs. Of course RNs are sometimes expected to do it but not on the level that CNAs are. Nurses in America give shots, other forms of medicine, take vital signs, and more. To become an RN, you MUST go to college. The only thing you can get in a nursing school is a CNA or LPN certificate.

I too have a lot of respect for nurses and doctors - after falling from a tall ladder at home - reportedly while painting the back of my house. I state "reportedly", because I sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and do not remember the accident, nor the first week and a half in the Trauma Center - before being moved to MaDonna Rehab. Hospital. in NE. MaDonna was difficult for me, because I looked and felt fine, except for some balancing issue, and the scar under my arm, in my side, where the Trauma Center had cut open my chest, to drain blood from a lung, as I broke ribs, and sustained multiple closed fractures in my skull, and shoulder blade too. I also had 2 types of brain bleeds - but they weren't bad enough to need an operation. My return back home took 6 1/2 weeks total - after I was taught to balance and stand, walk, and regain a correct sense of where I was and what date it is, and am now just left with a slight double vision problem, correctable w/ glasses. 6 months since my accident, I was permitted to take my driving test - which I passed, of course, so I was allowed to drive again! As I watch other videos on Trauma Centers and hospitals, I know I'm lucky to be alive, and perhaps as recent as 20 years ago, I may have died / or certainly been left w/ a lot more brain damage, had I had the accident in the past. Edit: Immediately after my accident, I was put into a drug induced coma, for better brain health I'm told, and my breathing was taken over. My first memory - filmed by my sister, is waking from the coma, and I felt the tubes in my throat, which prevented me from talking and were uncomfortable, so I naturally tried to remove them, as predicted, but my hands had been wrapped in cotton, so I could not do this. I remember being super frustrated, staring at my hands, and thinking WTF! But I do not remember anything else of that day. My next memory, is waking up in the hospital, feeling healthy, so trying to disconnect the various hoses and wires, so I could drive myself home. But, of course, the hospital, knowing this may happen, had alarms on my clothing and bed, so if I tried to get out of bed, a robotic voice would automatically tell me to stay in bed! (And a nurse would be alerted, who would come and remind me, for the 10th time, to just press the Call button on the remote, if I needed anything. I would apologize, but, I would also forget, so each time this happened, it would be new advice to me. lol Edit #2 -For the Record - after my next accident, please leave my underwear ON! (Unless you have a confirmed injury underneath them. Then, and only then. I will absolve the hospital for missing any injuries do to this obvious request). TIA. Edit #3: Because I live alone, and was working by myself, most of the details of my accident were unknown. - What happened (fall from what height, why, and when), so I'm sure a complete picture of my condition was challenging. I sort of owe my life to the neighbor dog, who likely heard my moans, and/or smelled my blood, and refused to move from his side of my privacy fence, alerting his owner that something was wrong / unusual. My neighbor then found me, and "asked" me if he should call 911. I said something like, "No, I'm just going through some things." So, apparently, I could hear and talk, but was not thinking much. lol

What about if you come in with a pacemaker. And they have you go through cat scan. Bad news

There is nothing wrong with that. You can't have anything magnetic/metal however if you have to do an MRI.

that is the MRI, not the CT or CAT scanner. MRI is the big magnet.

It protects their bodies from radiation when they perform ct scans, mri's and x-rays. I assume they always put one on just in case and because they wouldn't have time to leave the room and go find one.

My mom was a ICU nurse for over 30 years taking care of Veterans . My mom had a stroke while taking care of patient and could not recover. I couldn't be more proud of who my mom was and how many lives she helped while she was on earth.
