Hawai'i is so beautiful! I've always wanted to visit, but I'm hesitant because native Hawai'ians have been begging for tourism to cease for a while now. I hope that doesn't sound judgmental, I don't think it's bad that you and your friends visited Hawai'i! I'm sure they could tell y'all are good people; I know they don't want to shut out tourists altogether, but as of now that seems to be the only solution to keep the island livable. It's such a richly beautiful island and I hope the native Hawai'ians can get the justice they deserve

Local from Oahu here! So glad you enjoyed your time here! Just a reminder for future visits for anybody, be sure to support local businesses! Respect the land, don’t take rocks/sand from the islands, and please always be sure to go back home if you aren’t from the land. Hawaiians are constantly being displaced and pushed out due to tourists buying land and property here. Also, technically you were right! You weren’t in America since Americans illegally forced hawaii to be a state. On a brighter note: The islands are rich in culture and beautiful to see, if you’re visiting just be sure to educate yourself from natives about the history and the culture of the islands! And again, always support local!❤️

So you're saying people shouldn't move to Hawaii :(? I have a family member who has and they love it - I've also contemplated buying a condo there
@babybatburrito99667 ай бұрын
@@lizjobson2981Yes! The reason for that is, the cost of living here is already extremely high and is only getting higher. More and more people from America have been moving to Hawaii, which raises prices higher and pushes out and displaces native hawaiians from their own land. Instead of what would be native hawaiians home, it’s now just a tourist and vacation destination for non native people. This also causes native wildlife to die off like plants and animals, due to building more and more condos and land that only non natives can afford.

I absolutely love Hawaii. I went there a few years ago and I did not want to leave. I fell in love with the culture and the people immediately. As a mainlander, I also understand the responsibility we have as tourists to respect the choices and complaints that the islanders have. I do not want to be part of the problem that they deal with on a day to day basis. Please understand, if you are going to travel to Hawaii, there may be people who treat you like a tourist. Even if you are doing your absolute best to not be that way. No shade to anyone who does travel there, it's such a tough topic of conversation and I hope that more people just are better when travelling in general! ❤️ I'm so glad you had a fun trip Garrett!

Yeah, I have seen a lot of comments of people that are furious that I would step foot in Hawaii, as all the locals seemed so kind there… but I have also seen comments from people who were born and raised on this island, expressing nothing but love. So I suppose it’s a nuanced issue. But I really appreciate your kind, respectful comment.

@@garrettunhinged Of course people would be kind when you're there, they're not bad people. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't be responsible and not contribute to the further bastardization and colonization of a place where tourism has pushed the natives to poverty in their very own land.
@meowmew4447 ай бұрын
@@caryl.885 It's not a black and white issue. Some natives are suffering due to tourism because of the issues it causes, such as the housing crisis, while others enjoy and welcome it due to the benefits, such as small businesses flourishing. Some believe there are respectful ways to visit while others disagree with any tourism. It's fine to bring up the problems caused by rampant tourism, but you're speaking about this as if there's no nuance to it. I don't think that's a productive way to open a dialogue about this, especially when you're speaking over the voices of the native people. It's important to consider all of their opinions and experiences and not speak for them.

Word of advice, never take sand or rocks from the island. You will be cursed by the goddess Pele. Look up the stories. She sees them as her children. On happy note: Hawaii is gorgeous! If you are still there, I highly recommend going to the big island. They have a black sand beach and a green sand beach (Which only 1 of 4 in the entire world!)it is quite the treacherous ride to get there but its worth it. It's in Naalehu, Hawaii , the big island. . On the big island there is also a beautiful park which has homeless cats there that you can pet, a homeless man feeds them. I had talked to him and asked him how he does what he does he said this was his dream and he wouldn't want anything else. There is also a Buddhist temple on the big island. If you have the time and money, I highly recommend checking it out.

@B.McAllister7 ай бұрын
@@froggieiis Yeah, I do get the super rare things being priced higher. But I am referring more toward the novelty hype. I've seen dollar store toys being priced for ten dollars. Used Lego sets with missing pieces and stickers for the same price they charge in Walmart brand new. But even so, old vintage things were donated for free in hopes to be passed on to the less fortunate and thrift stores take advantage of that and price it accordingly. Which they have the right to do but to claim donations go toward the less fortunate while pricing like that is sad. It used to be fun finding rare things and the store having no clue what it was so they just let go for three dollars. Now they do research on items and then insanely price them all the while advertising they're there for the poor when they're lining their own pockets. I'd gladly pay the price knowing it was going toward a charity but they're just out for themselves.

A lot of people are posting about how the natives don’t like tourist…. I’m a Florida native and I don’t particularly like tourists either but I’m not going to shun someone away from seeing a new place. Just to visit. Some of us love to explore “God’s” (whatever you wanna call it)beautiful landscape and creations. No human being truly owns land. Mother Earth, nature, whatever you call it. It was here before you me or our ancestors were born and will be here after we all die. The earth is not a dead thing you can claim, but I do believe every one should be mindful and respectful of others home land and heritage.❤

A great comment. Kind, and respectful. Yeah, I think it comes down to respecting a place. Obviously there are terrible examples of Tourism that are really harmful and we’ve seen examples of this become news stories in the KZbin space, (I.e. the Japanese forest video and such) and that is really heartbreaking and awful to see, but imo if you have love and respect for the place, and research it and respect local etiquette and customs (all while supporting local businesses) it seem very good to visit.

The issue seems to be more about housing - so many rentals take away housing for native people. Also developers and rich people who buy land that should belong to the native families. It’s more about colonization and rights for native people than anything.

I miss being home. Glad you got to visit my beautiful island, it’s been 8 years since I left and the thing I miss the most is the beach! I’m glad you had an amazing time Garrett!!
