For a while that helped keep the franchise front and center for general audiences but eventually styles woyld change faster than movies could be produced and they started to feel like "Your Dad's Spy." Daniel Craig's Bond tried to bring new life to the franchise amd for a while it felt like new but there's still just something keeping them from nailing it.

I read the books years ago Addie... they are very different to the books. Names and characters are taken from the books but the events are almost all different to them... they cut the Vietnam war parts that would force them to set it in the past and they ditched the Jackal amongst many changes. Some of the things they kept: amnesia, being found by fishermen, going to the safety deposit box at the bank, him formerly being an assassin sort of (it's very different and explaining it would spoil the book events). But to end this essay, the films are essentially a different entity to the books so i wouldn't worry too much about it. Although, if you like spy novels, they're not bad.

I agree. The books and films share almost nothing save for names and the barebones premises of the "assassin who loses his memory." Every other aspect of the plot is new. Even the characters behind the names share no resemblance to their book counterparts.

@@PinkyPowers and I’m not complaining cause the movies are enjoyable but having read the books it’s not even that typical gripe that things are different lol. It’s very much they licensed the property and took it in a completely different direction. To the point it’s confusing why they named the sequels using the book titles 😂. They’d already got people on board for the movie and premise and didn’t try to expand or go back and mine the literature for storylines. I thoroughly enjoyed the books, I really like Matt Damon and these movies…but why they share the same names is purely so someone could avoid a potential lawsuit somewhere for being too similar in premise because they’re wildly different otherwise.

The only similarity between the films and the books is that its about a spy who loses his memory called jason bourne. They changed pretty much everything else because the director was quoted as saying "the bourne book is unfilmable trash".

It was a practical effect, Matt ducked behind the moving truck to make it look like Jason Bourne disappeared into thin air.

Just a fun fact. This movie came out a month or two after "9 11". So, on the DVD came with an alternate beginning and end. Because the producers didn't think Americans would be comfortable with big explosions. So, with the alternate beginning and end made, it look like the events happened six months to a year earlier. But, preview sceneings had people not making the connection.

This movie is actually based on the Robert Ludlum 'Jason Bourne' series of novels from the 1970s and 1980s etc. Robert Ludlum was one of the greatest suspense thriller spy novelists, with many of his novels being made into Hollywood movies and TV shows. In fact, I found out recently that there was a Bourne Identity TV mini-series from 1988. Anyway, the original Robert Ludlum 'Jason Bourne' novels are far superior to the sanitized watered-down scaled-down versions that we see in the 2000s Bourne movies. There was so much more going on in the novels, especially with the Cold War serving as the backdrop.

True but its still a good ide to leave as few traces as possable when u try to disappear. They knew they hade used the car so they ofc gonna think that they have been were the car would be found. But if there is no physical proof left in the car of them then it calls into question if they left the car there or if someone else toke it and left it there. 1 is an absolute that they been there and the other is a guess at best. Create enough guesses and eventuelly the once tracking u will guess wrong and u disappear.

Back in the late '80s, I was a bit of a book worm, and the bus to school was about an hour each way. One of the books I read, was The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum, who was a very prolific writer, and before the Bourne films, had had several of his other books also made into films. There would also be The Bourne Identity mini series in the late '80s, though I've never seen it. Highly recommend the book as well as the film.

This is a little bit of a spoiler so stop reading if you don't want to know more. We find out later that part of Jason Bourne's training is to remove empathy from his personality. This is in the book too but for a slightly different reasons and the recovery of his memory is also different. When Jason sees the children on the boat this triggers an empathetic response. From there it's a small step that brain tampering, getting shot and falling into the ocean could cause amnesia.

Feel free to read the Bourne novels even if you haven't seen the movies yet. Other than a few character names, the plots have no similarity whatsoever with the movies, so you won't be spoiling anything for yourself. Both the movies and the novels are great, but they're completely different. (At least the first three are. I haven't read any of the books or seen any of the movies beyond that.)

Originally a 1980 book by Robert Ludlum, made into a 1988 TV miniseries starring Richard Chamberlain before being changed and reimagined into this film. If you haven't seen it already, try Three Days Of The Condor (1975) starring Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway.

I like this movie a lot, but the next two movies are on a totally different level. One of my favorite trilogies ever.
