The biggest lesson here is that you do not have to be the smartest person in the room to be good at your job. I was terrible at school, didn't go to university and did odd jobs until i was 26. I landed my first IT job at 26 and worked really hard to understand all the different concepts and did a lot of work on certifications. I kept doing this over my career...always trying to learn new things. I was definitely not the leading expert on all technical topics but i did have a very broad knowledge of lots of different technical areas at a decent depth. Now, 10 years later, i work for one of the biggest and most successful security companies in the world. Everything Jason talks about in this video is spot on.

@@JasonGoodison That's a great advice to be honest, my college students are like below average and because of online exams they don't study anything, I feel like I'm doing great but it's too late when we realize that the people we are competing with were no competition at all. Now I just try to learn more and more and more , just enough that I get time to do all other extra activities, everything feels great and I enjoy my life more. Dude, you're right in so many levels. I always thought going to these giant companies was impossible. When I started studying for programming competitions back in 2018 some people told me it would help me land an interview and maybe a job in companies such as facebook and google but I didnt really believe them, it was something so distant so I stopped studying. Context: I live in a poor part of Brazil and the school I study in isn't the most prestigious school even in the city. Last year a guy from the same school I study landed an internship at Facebook and soon after that an internship at Uber. I was speechless. I realized it was possible. I thought "if someone from my school did it then maybe I could do it too, why not try?" and I got in touch with him, we happen to be good friends nowadays. This fact gave me the movitation and goals I needed. I got back to studying for ICPC in August 2021, didnt really go to the nationals but its alright, kept studying, then stopped for 2 months. I had finally started planning my future. I planned leaving the company I worked at to spend 1~2 years only studying (the company ended up flopping but its another story lol). Then in February this year this friend was at Meta and said he could referral me and some friends as an intern. I saw this opportunity and got back to studying real hard. Ended up getting rejected in the final round but didnt care, I kept studying because I could clearly see my growth and that alone is so satisfying. Today I got an offer for an internship at Google here in Brazil. I couldn't believe it. Srsly, im stvpid AF. I take hours and even days to grasp subjects other people understand in one go. Im slow at solving problems (that hurts me a lot as a competitive programmer).. this is crazy but the best advice I could give is: if you want it go for it. Whatever it is. Stop worrying, stop overthinking, stop daydreaming, stop wondering, FREAKING DO IT RIGHT NOW. Start studying and apply yourself right now. Go ahead and dont look back. Ignore your feelings and thoughts of self-doubt, they will scream that you are not capable, simply keep going, its worth it. And the best thing is after some time you get some inertia and it becomes easy to keep grinding because now you're used to it. But the hardest part ALWAYS is starting. We dont know if we have another life. STOP DREAMING AND START PLANNING AND EXECUTING YOUR PLAN. Really guys, I cant stress this enough. I've procrastined studying my whole life, I only started getting some sense of accomplishment and growth once I took the guts to actually do it. Do it too, I promise it, if its something you enjoy you're not gonna regret it. Just to get back to the point of the video: if you want to get a job at these companies do your research, take some time to focus (at least some 4 hours a day) and just do it. Its not that difficult, a lot of people dont even try but if you work your 4$$ off its only a matter of time

This reminds me of my own route. I started working at a tech company in a non-dev role and only started writing my own code because I wanted to get things done without waiting for the dev team. I really needed this video. I have been having a real rough time after dropping out of college (comp sci major); suffered from agoraphobia from pandemic lockdown, anxiety, low self-esteem, undiagnosed ADHD. I recently started becoming more serious and less insecure about prospects in searching for my first job in software development (mostly because I don't want to be a loser almost-30 year old with 100k in debt and nothing to show for it). Hearing you say all of this really changed my outlook. So thank you for that. p.s. I literally JUST solved that weird zigzag problem OMG it was a ton of fun lol

@@rumble1925 thanks for reaching out! Yo, i gotta say, I've since been eating a lot of hearty proteins in the mornings and working out in the evenings and things have improved tremendously for me. Can't and won't ditch the junk food, though. I just adjust my exercise whenever i indulge and i feel that things pan out nicely. But yeah, I don't generally like to promote healthy foods and dieting and what-not as magic cure-alls, but damn, no, that stuff does make a world of a difference. I think the exercise, by far, helps the most with my ADHD. It really gives me that powerful burst in dopamine that really puts me in an awesome mood and let's me do solid work!

Hey Brian? I just want to say it's comforting to read your comment and to be able to relate on a lot of grounds, which brought me to simply search "I am bad in coding" because at this point with just 2 portfolio websites, I feel like I am not qualified to any jobs that are advertised for front end web developer! And I am so frightened of interviews coz I feel like I might not know what to say or be able to do their tests. So worried of all that and yet so worried of also disappointing myself and be in my early 30s and still no permanent job related to my field (IT Diploma) I also graduated right when the world went into lockdown! March 2020! I have a diagnosed anxiety for years (and on meds, but I can cope much better) but the anxiety of trying to get my life together + worried if I will ever be good enough in coding to get hired are just always at a tug-o-war 😂 But recently I try to just keep doing projects, and teaching a new motto to myself "Just f it. Send the resume. Whichever comes back, just treat them all the same: whether you get the job or not, stay calm and keep going". Because my anxiety can take me from just seeing the job requirements advert to already seeing how I will not be able to perform, the company is disappointed in me, then I will get fired, carrying my keyboard, coffee mug and a potted plant... yea to that extent. So I do sincerely wish for both of us to enter the year with courage and determination to get through all of that, and get a good job for a start! Good luck, Brian! Wow, thank you! 🖤 I actually went to UW and studied Anthro/Arts… while I was there I spent a lot of time in the comfy lounge and was obsessed with the tech being built. I wanted to minor in CS but I «knew» that wasn’t for me, I felt like it was out of my league and stuck to my skeletons and paint. I took a leap and switched careers back in 2018. I now work for a charity teaching coding and slowly building apps but I still crave full time development. This video is a reminder of the work I need to do to get there. I'm 55 years old, and I wrote my first video game when I was 13. I'm no genius... Games were pretty simple in 1982. I was just one of the few kids who owned a TRS-80, so my skills seemed like magic to other kids. I got an education, but not in computer science. (For various reasons.) But I still had coding skill. I wrote some freeware which gained a substantial user base, and it demonstrated my skills, so I applied at small businesses with that coding sample in-hand, and coding became my career from about age 25 to age 42. I loved it. For me it was creative, and I'd even call it ART! (At small businesses you often have design freedom.) The software I made was loved by users, always intuitive and easy to use, and it would rarely break. My software impressed users, but not necessarily fellow coders. I still believe I made better product than they did. But at some point, I needed to stop. Staring at a screen all day isn't good for the human psyche... at least mine. And I didn't want to get laid off at age... well, my current age. Because I knew if that happened, I may not get a job again. So, lacking other skills, I bought an existing business, followed its model, and I've made it thrive, making better money than ever. I still code, as a hobby and to create tools for my business, and my work is still beautiful art.

God damn this video hit me like a truck. I'm in CC right now and I feel like I am so behind in CS compared to some of my friends in other Universities. I feel like I barely know anything but I got into a summer Undergraduate Research Program at a Cal State. I really underestimated my work and I feel like I was truly a below average CS student. After watching this video however, I really do feel like I'm going to be ok. The "Your life isn't over" lesson really resonated with me as well. I went to a free coding BootCamp and they offered an Internship for beginner software engineering work and I did not even get offered an interview, but now I have this Research Program. You always do get another shot :)

Still not knowing how to center something within a div sometimes. Still confused about flex and especially grid… I am about to be somewhat sufficient with react. Just a heads up from a programmer of 15+ years: C and C++ are pretty damn hard and it only gets easier after. They’re great languages, especially for teaching the fundamentals but they’re also fairly difficult compared to most other high level languages. So struggling in those languages is ok really and don’t necessarily means you can’t become a great programmer :)

A full 80% of graduating seniors Bachelor degree in Computer science *cannot* differentiate between pointer and value! That's just stupid. The school/teacher was doing them a disservice letting those people graduate! Worse, 90% of students don't even know what they're doing, but doesn't study further. I remember getting a B after 20 hours of classroom instruction. I took initiative of further study _on my own_ for another 20 hours before I was satisfied. That self-study initiative makes all the difference. C isn't difficult, just misunderstood.

@simpletongeek More an issue with how universities teach their students computer science. The reason they mostly teach Java instead of something like C is because they're teaching students to run before they walk, which is ultimately what the industry wants, but not what it needs.

Over twenty years in the industry and I think I still suck at coding. Although FAANG hire smart coders, the rest of the Tech companies also value innovators. I realized that I was good in prototyping, copy pasting fragments of other people's code and getting the initial code to work quickly. That's what I stuck with doing and survived. The smart people come in and make your code perfect. My advise would be find what you like about the tech industry and own it. Also the learning never stops. I still spend 2-3 hours a day learning technology.

I was searching for that content because I'm in a tech company job I got because the disability law and I got in without any experience and I'm struggling real hard to learn and I often feel too dumb or incompetent to be in the job. Your video motivated me a lot. I'm doing small things like going through a json file and validating the fields in python but now I see that that's a little step towards something bigger. OMG this video is so much needed now! I didn't know how to code before the university(don't have so much understanding now too...) and I was even thinking about quitting, because I don't understand anything. But I've passed some programming classes with a help of god and my friends:)) I don't think that I'm even an average, because every programming class is hard af and other students don't seem to struggle as much. But your video gives me hope, that one day everything will be alright

Jason Thank you for this video. It is like, when you get low on your exam and you think you are the only one but then there are someother people who also got low score and you become happy since you are not the only one who fails it. I was going to give up but this video just became a fuel for me. A fuel to believe in myself. And I hope that fuel will burn hot forever. No fuel can go forever nor finish but it can attract other fuels and make them burn. I had a fuel which was almost finished and now you poured some gas into it. A lot of gas, If someone see this, Unless you blow to your own fire it will never finish. All you need to heat up it again is finding a fuel. This video is just a crazy fuel which you should watch every few months. I just found it and I am happy to find it. I hope you won't fail and I won't too.

This video is definitely very inspiring! Many devs here on youtube glorify their job and/or skills to the point that oneself feels like a total noob compared to any developer who already has some work experience! Your story and the way you told it in this video totally motivates me because not only does it show how far you can go in a short period of time with enough effort and grit, but also shows great empathy on the big struggle it is to break into tech and to get through the first (really difficult) tech jobs. I feel so understood and this video really is a helping hand to keep on, never stop learning and believing you will eventually get there, and to not feel like a dumbass in a crowd of cracks as much!

Impostor syndrome is really awful. I wish I was as confident as you were when you decided to go for internships in university, I was so afraid I was inferior to my classmates that I'd never get in. I basically gained all of my confidence during the pandemic because I focused on nothing but learning to cope with the lockdown. Things get better, but sometimes it takes a lot of faith in the process and reflection to see any results to your effort.
