I've heard people who were born blind say they wouldn't want to have surgery to restore their vision which does make sense as having sight would be scary to someone who's never had it as it's basically a whole new life to them. I was born blind in one eye and although I think it is possible to have my sight in my blind eye restored, to me the concept of seeing and observing information out of TWO eyes seems scary and overwhelming, like how do people focus and not constantly get confused having vision coming from two directions? I'd probably take the surgery if I could afford it, however given my age now it might not be as effective. Great to see you made this video, Ross! :) I actually have wondered for a while what your response would be to having your sight back if you could. I do very much think in our lifetime either surgery will improve and will be able to restore vision loss in most blind people or we'll develop some sort of Bionic eye which will enable most of the blind community to see again. I think this sort of technology does already exist, but it's in the early phases and the quality is very poor, not to mention ridiculously expensive.

Hi, just found your channel through your old pokemon bonk sound comment. I'm sighted and I'm the guy who made Braillemon all the way back. I'm disabled too but not blind, moreso with mental illness/invisible stuff. This is a really important message I think though, since I've seen how both people who prefer themselves blind, and people who would like to be sighted again. The thing is, I think nobody can make that decision besides yourself. I think bodily autonomy and the right to preserve our own bodies is important - and to make that decision ourselves. For example the relationship with medication with schizospec disorders is very complicated and society puts a lot of pressure to put us on meds that can have permanent disabling effects (Tardive Dyskinesia) and can have uncomfortable side effects like weight gain or being really out of it. Some people have no problem, other people it's just. Ugh. And there is a lot of social pressure to remove that autonomy to live these "other" existences, especially if they're difficult to employ. There is a subtle ableist way where people want to actually eradicate these other ways of living because being "sighted" or "neurotypical" or whatever is a more "correct" way of being. And on the same token, people like yourself who are blind who would like their vision back have their complex relationship with vision reduced into a "cure" when in reality its a complex emotional and existential relationship to your body. this was a really good video, thanks for sharing!

Thank you and thank you for sharing your experience as well. I made this video so long ago, but my answer is still the same in that I would like my sight back. However since this video, I've heard countless stories of companies that implant devices into the eye or brain, only to abandon the project and leave a bunch of blind people with these devices that doctors don't know how to take out. So on that note, I will never ever allow any company to put something like that in my head, especially someone like Elongated Muskrat. Alsos uper cool that you created Braillemon. I was in high school when it was released haha.

Even when a photo has alt text. It’s not enough information when describing an image. I need and want more information. That probably comes from being able to see before and also knowing what I’m missing.
