Man stumbled onto this looking for Tascam videos and I had to put you over. I know it's an older video but it's brilliant. I have a 424 I got in '93 when I was 17 and a 488mkII in '96. Both excellent pieces of modern art in my book, love Tascam stuff. Those drums sound so cool, that is a great Tascam PortaStudio trademark. Really cool stuff brother, be cool...
@BrothersNylon12 жыл бұрын
Exactly. All the tracks are there, The song will play if I just crank up the faders but its cool to drop out instruments and add reverbs and do all that stuff.

Holy shit! What an Amazing sound. How did you record the drums out of curiosity on a 4 track, Condenser mics? Out Board mixer? They sound incredible
@BrothersNylon9 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! The drums were recorded straight into the Tascam 244. No compression no pre amps. One overhead condenser, snare mic, and kick mic. I did put compression on the final master of the mix
@permanentphasevideo9 жыл бұрын
That's amazing. I probably sound like a noob but I'm new to this world of 4 track analog, how did you plug xlr mic plugs into the 4 track if it only has 1/4 inch jacks, don't condensers need phantom power? Also any kick mic and over head condenser suggestions?
@BrothersNylon9 жыл бұрын
I used XLR to 1/4 inch cables by Hosa! Really neat cables
@permanentphasevideo9 жыл бұрын
ranikade3 oh awesome! & what do you use for a phantom power source?
@BrothersNylon9 жыл бұрын
For phantom power I use. Behringer PS400
@bennyl.53 жыл бұрын
really impressed with the sound of those real drums on there, there's some nice air and highs there, that are hard to get on some of the other Tascam cassette recorders, sounds good

How to get that satured sound on drums ?
@BrothersNylon12 жыл бұрын
i do! I think you may know this desk pretty well... its only the tascam 388! Picked it up yesterday for $200 with some 7" reels. I'll upload something tonight wth it
@TheBakeryStudio12 жыл бұрын
I like the sound that you get out of the reverb when you add lots of high mid tone to it, If you really push the reverb to it's limit you start to get those dubby rattle sounds out of it. I guess every unit is different. Do you have a bigger desk you could run the 244 into?

Hi ! I really like the sound. And just to understand, are you putting 4 tracks (or less) in this tool (Tascam 244) and you mixes them to create one ? Great job whatever ! Realy good dub ! ++

hahaha cheers. Bust it out!!! even tho I think those dont have efx inserts!

Did you have to use an external mixer for your drums due to only having 4 tracks available? im sorry im new to the 4 track world!. reeally love your music btw!
@BrothersNylon8 жыл бұрын
No all the drums were done on the tascam 244. I recorded 3 channels and bounced all of them down to track 4 mono! Thanks!
@ericnunez2868 жыл бұрын
thank you so much brotha, one more question if you dont mind me asking. when your live mixing like this, do you only get one chance to get the mixing right since it goes to tape? or can you always go back from the beginning and mix again? Sorry again for the newbie question. im just really interested in buying a tascam 244.
@BrothersNylon8 жыл бұрын
Eric Nunez Yo can go back and edit. But getting the volume right before hitting tape is important for maximum fidelity. The 244 has great editing options

Been interested in this recorder for a while. Would you say it sounds much different than something later 4 tracks such as a 424 or an MT4x? I've owned both machines in the past (now have an MT8x) but I was just curious if the mixer or inputs on this recorder added any sort of magic to the recordings that the later 4 tracks don't really have. Great mix btw! Been following your channel and SC for a while.
@BrothersNylon9 жыл бұрын
+Alexander Aultman Totally! The mixer on this thing adds some vibe. A very Good mixer that's bright and punchy. Also, the trim pots are loud as hell. I can't compare to the MT4x or 424 as I've never had those. But it definitely sounds great compared to my tascam 388. It's a much more hifi sound than the 1/4" tape of the 388.
@alexanderaultman9 жыл бұрын
+ranikade3 It has a very full sound to it. In my experience with 4 tracks, everything generally sounds pretty dull until you add a bit of post EQ to the mix.
@BrothersNylon9 жыл бұрын
True, the 244 sounds really good with zeroed out eq
@BogoEN6 жыл бұрын
I found your channel looking for videos on the 144. You definitely are inspired, and it’s inspiring as a musician to watch you do your thing. Great stuff. I hope you’re still recording to analog. You mentioned in the comments that this machine is more hi fi than the reel to reel 388 you guys record to. Is that true? And how do you like using the 244? I have the 144, but it’s fairly similar. I was tempted by earlier recorders that I thought might have more vibe than the Porta 02. Thanks and keep up the jams!
@BrothersNylon6 жыл бұрын
BogoEN yeah the 244 has a a great Dolby Noise reduction that makes it sound really good. Very hot sound with minimal hiss. The 388 has it too but you need to turn it on. I don’t use the 244 much anymore as the rubber in the machine has deteriorated but I still use the mixer as the preamps and eqs are good enough by themselves.

Very nice. It looks like your drum track is on track 4 no? I only see the meter moving very little,but the drums sound nice and loud!! How do you go about doing this. I have been doing some recording with my Tascam 246 4 track and when I do drums,it usually throws the needle into the red with a bit of overload. Anyhow....nice job!
@BrothersNylon10 жыл бұрын
it helps to kind of play with a consistent dynamic level and then crank them going in and out. Also the tape compression slams it pretty loud!

would you recommend using an external mic preamp ? or are the mic pres in the Tascam 244 Good enough to not need one. Thank ylu guys in advance ! .
@BrothersNylon6 жыл бұрын
Alan Argotti I think the mic pres on the tascam 244 are quite good. Although there is no phantom power so you need to either buy an external phantom power supply or bus in a mixer that has phantom power into the 244. It’s really intended for dynamic mics like 57s and 58s because of the 1/4inch sockets

It's a good machine, wish I could run it but for the service manual. Please share service manual in case you have, even circuit diagram would work for me. After watching this video I'm more inclined to do it ASAP.

I think it's great when I see people making kool music on old junk. I found most of my favorite stuff in dumpsters. My old karaoke system from a dumpster has key transposer, and pitch control plus 2 decks that RUN IN TANDEM. When one ends the other starts. One of them has auto reverse. I guess it was thrown away because the cd player was dead. Who cares. I put a rack mount digital sampler in it's place.

I'll put it in my next video. I used my Tascam dp01 fx to make some cool loops last night. you inspired me to try it on a digital deck. it loops but theres a .05 sec. pause. Check out the loop on ReverbNation under C. Lee Clarke .it's called Breakdown Loop.

@bleebloe27269 жыл бұрын
+ranikade3 very cool. I hope to do something like this on my new 244. i say "new" because i really lucked out and got my hands on a brand new, never used 244. maybe there is a god! i see these older units did not have auto punch. Does that impose a problem for you in recording? Also, it doesn't seem to have "high speed" tape option. Is that okay though?
@BrothersNylon9 жыл бұрын
+bleebloe The 2l44 definitely delivers in the punch department! It has nice tape compression too. And I think it runs at high speed!
@bleebloe27269 жыл бұрын
+ranikade3 really? i sure hope so...i scouted the entire box, couldn't find auto-punch or a high speed tape option.. but nonetheless, the results speak for themselves, and i love what I'm hearing in your vid!

Sounds ok to me. You can get a lot more out of the reverb if you send it from the aux to a channel strip of it's own to give it some eq on the return. Looks like you might be a bit limited on the 244 desk though. Does it have a tape output for each channel? I have a later tascam cassette 4 track and you can route that into a bigger desk, makes it sound a lot bigger and you get the benefit of more aux channels and spare mixer strips for effects. You're gettin great sounds out of the 4 track.
