i might be biased, but the first month's prizes were just about perfect, to me: FIRST PLACE > nice instrument, SECOND PLACE > recording upgrades. Sticking to this model it may be easier to work with retailers and/or product companies, giving you a wider net to cast.

I wonder how many contestants are motivated so much by the prizes. I would think the main reward for many is just being voted best. So lack of prizes should not be a reason to cancel March. Just announce zero prizes and let those who want to, compete. Now, lack of a video editor, that is a different matter.
