I completely agree. My personal click-through rate was higher years ago. Maybe I have changed, but looking at the past 50 videos or so, less than a handful pique my interest and production quality (past a certain minimum) is largely irrelevant. A significant portion of the videos have thumbnails and titles seemingly targeting 10-12 year olds and they completely turn me off, but I recognise that there could be people out there with the opposite view.

@@shadiversity Here's a couple of ideas that might work: 1) more reaction videos - reaction content, basically speaking your mind about something recent still seem to be doing well, and I can't lie, I do watch a good fair amount of it. Of course, on people that I resonate with, that I'm intersted in hearing (either for genuine curiosity or for confirmation bias) 2) make series. That is, content that is split up in multiple parts, having a cliffhanger at the end of each part, except the last one. Ok, maybe the cliff hanger isn't required. Special care must be taken to make sure all parts are interesting otherwise mid-series the interest might drop off and kill the series early. Ideas for series: a) simply split some content - the idea here is to produce the same, but have more videos which might get more impressions.... thinking now about it I'm not so sure anymore, but who knows, maybe there's a nugget of an idea here that can make this work b) have contests - these are usually engaging by nature as you're curios who's going to win. Good potential for drama. Hard to setup though, so I can't tell if it's doable c) actual series - saaay, a Phalanx's tour of the world - where a Phalanx character (giving a personality too would be awesome) fights in all kinds of wars across the globe across the time, each episode showing just one instance, showcasing when it would've been good and it would've sucked. Bonus points in this fictional example: why a phalanx is better than a storm trooper :D Something like sword fails looks good. Not sure how sustainable having daily videos is. Both for you and your crew and for your viewers. And more content in general. Having saturation is a real thing nowadays. I already watch too much KZbin daily and for me personally I doubt it would work. I have to admit, I'm not a true Shad, I only watch whatever KZbin randomly chooses to promote from your videos once a month or so. Sometimes I do check some other videos from you, but overall I don't watch much, since there's other topics (PCs, CPUs, Linux, Open Source, right to repair, batteries, traffic, specific video games) that interest me more and take my time. If I'd stay and only watch KZbin instead of also working (I'm only several decades short of retiring lol) I'd very likely watch all your videos. Just remembered - I remember hearing something among the lines that weapons aren't to be promoted anymore, mostly because of USA's problem of not having lunatics going haywire in some school. And that because of that some gun channels were hit hard for no fault of their own. If that's the case, maybe now that Trump is back in office, this might change course and your channel might be back having normal impressions. I wish you good luck in your adapt endeavor. If Shad were a lone swordsman fighting some big YT monster with an unreachable head, what would Shad do ?

The KZbin Home-tab has become nearly worthless. YT has changed it many times, often for the better, often to make it crap. Right now for me it is nearly unusable cause a good portion of the videos are those i HAVE ALREADY WATCHED, the rest is mostly videos from channels i recently watched a single video of. Subscribing and checking the subcribed-tab is decently reliable but also doesn't even show all videos. And to get anything outside a very small bubble i have to reload the page a couple of times. Or far better: use anything but youtube to get recommendations.

I've been able to break through the YT Home-tab mediocrity by starting there, and then using the list of videos on the side-bar of videos in a new branch topic, to continue browsing, leaving the home page behind for a while, and only using that new list. I just want to honestly say how it works for me: I get recommendation for every video of yours, but I don't watch every time. It's usually because I need to feel the vibe to listen to, specifically, you, or Tyranth, or anyone from your crew. And it's not limited to just your channel. I watch many channels in a vibe + binge-way. There is an ant channel that I watch maybe every month or two to catch up IF I don't forget. There's also prymitive technology, etc. Maybe the algorithm is not great, but I'm curious if more people are like me and want to watch in bulk, but essentially forgetting about some channels for a while and not catching up. Also, you probably know Louis Rossmann, the guy who fixes macbooks. I recently only look at his rant videos with his cats in the view, rather than the repair videos... And those probably have more views because cats. If algorithm recommends what people tend to click on, then I think it's apparent as to why. People are getting used to watching react videos, so you probably could make a video of Tyranth doing something with swords and having you comment on it. I wonder what that format would do lol (and then do Tyranth commenting on your comments). People like to see the engagement and not strictly information. That's why Angry Video Game Nerd is so popular (and the relatability as well)

I'm sorry to break it to you, but it's more than likely that it's not the algorithm, it's the content. For reference, I've joined your channel back when you started your exploration of the giant sword concept. I've really enjoyed your RnD, both in terms of martial arts, as well as engineering. I understand that further steps are expensive and take a long time, but recently I wasn't interested in clicking on any of your videos. I have also enjoyed your other RnD projects, like fire arrows, and the humorous questing series which was unfortunately cut short. In the end, all I had left were sword reviews, which get old really quickly - you talk a bit about how this sword is marginally better/worse than other swords in your collection, and then proceed with exactly the same montage of low quality slow-mo destruction of Pool noodle, Water bottles, and a piece of lumber. It gets old and boring very quickly. I hope you will find something useful in my feedback.

Now think about the million+ people who joined this channel because it was a channel with professional style documentaries about castles. Before he even started doing 'giant sword concept'.

The Spinoff project that is Knights Watch probably wasn't to everyone's taste either ( I sure don't like it even if his political views are NOT in a misalignment with mine) and sadly it has affected how I view him as a content creator.
@shadiversityСағат бұрын
I appreciate your comment but unfortunately this is not helpful. The fact you think most of the content is sword reviews shows how much content you've missed. If the content was less appealing the conversion from impressions to views would be worse on those videos that got fewer views but I literally showed that many of those videos actually have better conversion rates, click-through rates and retention. People literally liked those videos MORE than the successful ones but they didn't get greater views because they got so few impressions. That is an algorithm problem, not a content problem.

I second the suggestions to do more core historically inspired fantasy content. You're really good at that. Gaming, wargaming, TTRPG and HEMA content might be easier to make in between big outdoor shoots. There are things happening in these fields all the time that you can analyze/cover/react/review more quickly than complex physical setups.

You touched on the biggest thing Shad ignores. 1.7m subs, but they clearly don't all want to watch his stuff. People are subbed to so many channels, that there is no way for Recommended to show all of it, plus the new stuff that is being recommended. If Shad is getting low viewers, then it's not really going to make it into Recommended, esp if that person doesn't watch his channel regularly. Plus, it is the same stuff for quite a long time.
@anthonycar5182Сағат бұрын
That’s not what he’s talking about. He’s saying that as reflected in the data he presented in the video, on average people are quite likely to click on his videos if they see it pop up. Hence the high click through rate. This would make your situation kind of irrelevant to the problem he’s addressing.
@shadiversity15 минут бұрын
I understand my content isn't going to appeal to everyone but please also understand that your experience is not representative to most of the people that love my content and would watch more of my videos if they were notified they exist. Just because you see my videos recommended just means you've been one of the few because impressions are the lowest they've been in six years.

Algorithm is one thing, you are a niche channel covering a niche part of interest from people. Honestly the only sword/medieval focused channel I follow is yours. KZbin is an absurdly over saturated market. Staying alive here is not easy. I'd say if it is stampeding onto your personal life I'd pull back, find an other income and only do this for fun. I personally stream on twitch for about 4 years or 5 now... Have about the same amount of viewers on my channel, and i just don't let it get to me, it is just don't do it for money, I do it for the heck of it and because I enjoy doing it. So yeah. Respectfully Shad, I originally subscribed to your channel and watched almost everything you released when you were first starting out. What i was attracted to in your channel was just you being a passionate Australian man ranting and explaining swords and castle features in his study. Whilst its awesome to see your channel grow and your production quality increase, as you started to stray away from the content that i originally wanted to consume I started watching less and less just because im not interested. I really hate to say it but its the truth.

@Tyrannus_GamingСағат бұрын
Your video names are all over the place, and your content is very general, rather than specific. When I look forward to a TV Show, I want to see, "Game of Thrones - Episode 1," not "This Girl Adopted a Dragon, and her Brother was killed by a Hairy Surfer Bro." - I literally have no inclination to care, nor click it. My point is, think about what each video contributes to the last, and where you're going with it. I've had to do this with my own channel, because what's killing yours, is literally what prevented me from getting subscribers in my early days; clean, focused, and purpose made. Just my two-cents.

My experience is that KZbin shows you a whole bunch of different metrics, but the only one that matters is impressions. And that's the one thing you have absolutely no control over. It's also the thing that seems to make no sense whatsoever.
@StuGamePlusСағат бұрын
I feel ya. I've been struggling with this stuff since 2022...
@HaralHeisto2 сағат бұрын
I know it's frustrating, but this video will be hurting your figures, not helping. 1 - Videos talking about KZbin's algorithm are suppressed 2 - It's a video on a topic that is outside your channel's normal subject area 3 - It's probably going to have fairly low watch percentage Instead of posting videos like this - mention the "subscriptions" tab on the main YT page as part of the channel engagement stuff ("like, subscribe, bell" etc), because on that tab your subscribers WILL see your videos.
@HaralHeisto2 сағат бұрын
Oh, and review your auto-generated subtitles. Other non-american accented English speakers have been de-ranked and it's turned out to be for "offensive language", but where it was a faulty transcription - Irish accents seem to be the worst affected by that, but Aussies and Kiwis can be too.

Its Sad that all the hard work is not paying off in the current set up on youtube, but i do think a new video every 48 hours will help and that sounds over whelming but i think you should have someone in your team focus on finding content on youtube that's any to do with medieval history and react to it and then have a video that's a complimenting the video your reacted to with more information based on your your opinion. You can still do the kinds of videos you do now but they will only do better if you can get the volume of other videos out to compliment them so they will have to be lower down the list of priorities of your time. Good luck shad/family and team i wish you all the best
