I think back to Daenerys Stormborn of the many titles returning to Dragonstone...army, ships, and dragons. And I think about Olenna's advice about to whom to listen. This episode shows how easily Dany could have just taken the throne with her initial more direct strategy and stayed at full strength to face whatever was to come. Would she have defeated the army of the dead? Who knows. But she definitely would have had all her resources. To that end, as much as I like Tyrion, his allegiance to his family (intentional or otherwise) caused Dany a lot of problems. Being "more of the same" seems like it might have been the less bad choice to this point. She might not even have snapped.
@SerbAtheist Жыл бұрын
Yes, she would have won it, but if Mereen is any indication, none of it would have mattered. Sooner or later, she'd come in conflict with the north. Sooner or later, she'd demand a level of compliance and obedience that the culture of Westeros would simply be unable to give. Sooner or later, her harsh form of 'justice' would raise concerns even among her closest allies, further exacerbating her paranoia and escalating this brand of violence even further. Sooner or later, she'd simply be bored by the day to day realities of ruling and wish to conquer further. Sooner or later, Jon's heritage would be uncovered. Sooner or later, her promises of 'breaking the wheel' would ring as hollow as Xaro's giant vault. Sooner or later her dragons would reduce a city to ash.
@alejandroroldanortega819 Жыл бұрын
Olenna's advice was selfish and not with Daenerys' best interest in mind. Olenna didn't care about the people of Westeros and who would be the better king or queen, Olenna's goal was to get revenge on Cersei, and the fastest way to do that was "Be a dragon".

I still think it's too forced to make someone like Daenerys to take revenge on the whole city *except* Cersei *after they surrendered!* I also tried to think of an alternative solution that would have made that kind of"snap"more plausible and I thought of this:let's say Dany hears the bells,she and her men let their guards down and 1 Lannister soldier(who we should assume is particularly loyal to Cersei)kills Greyworm. *That* would be a plausible"final straw"that breaks Dany's mental state. pretty much. it was so dumb. Even sober addicts have a change, a trigger, a reason they slip back. Jaime had none of that. He left because he realized their values no longer aligned since she wasn't acting in the best interests of the country so why did he go back? did Cersei change her mind? no. did she apologize? no. did she interact with him at all? no. so what changed? I think the writers were trying to say that Jaime finally saw what life looks like without Cersei and he didn't like it because deep down he's just as "hateful" as Cersei and realized that he should be with her regardless of their conflict in values.....which is just....no words.
@xellestar Жыл бұрын
About how Dany 'controls' Drogon, going off memory as it has been a while but the books describe how certain people have a kind of telepathic connection to animals. Some notable examples from the show are wargs, who can literally 'skinchange' an animal. Bran is one (and is so powerful he can even skinchange a person) and one of the wildlings from season 2 was one, the guy who was controlling an eagle. In the books, pretty much all of the starks are wargs to some degree - not just Bran, though everyone except Bran has limited experiences with it. The other starks have 'wolf dreams' (especially Arya who has an extended sequence described) where they unconsciously warg into their wolves while sleeping, even if the wolf is far away. Anyway, while i don't think it's said that targaryans are wargs exactly, I think it's said that in the past they had a somewhat similar connection to their dragons when they are riding them, sometimes to the point where a dragon will feel the pain of its rider if the rider was shot by an arrow or something. I don't know if the writers had all of this in mind but it's some kind of explanation at least in book lore.

It’s very clear to her that nobody in Westeros fucks with her because she’s a foreign invader in there eyes. So yeah In that moment after she’s lost everything sitting on that dragon ALONE and she hears those bells ringing. It’s TOO LATE. You going to use these people against me so I won’t kill you cersi?!? Tywin Lannister was married to his cousin. Rickard Stark(Jon's Grandfather) was married to his aunt. False tension, where there should be none, being create. The bells never meant surrender. D&D don't how create a good story, they should not have cut so many important characters(Lady Stoneheart, Griff and young Griff, Victarion, the true brotherhood, Bloody Mummers, etc.)as soon as they ran out of materials the show sank. I fell so bad for parents who name their daughter Dany or Khaleesi. It's really funny seeing you doing the same thing we did when the episode air, trying to make sense of something that made absolutely no-sense.

I never really had a problem with the character decisions this episode. Tyrion taking Dany’s side seemed weird to a lot but he’s been surrounded by evil people all his life, and he had a ton of faith that she’d be the next great ruler. After the load of shit he’s been dealt, I can see him having faith like that. As for Jaime trying to save Cersei, she’s his sister, he wouldn’t kill her despite everything she’s done. Plus he’s been flip floppy with her the whole show. Honestly I couldn’t see him going out any other way because I never bought that he’d kill her. As for Daenerys, it was rushed for sure, and it needed more episodes, but where it ended up with her was fitting.

I think the main issue for myself and much of the fandom wasn't Dany's (and other main characters) actions being unbelievable, her character arc could very well lead to that outcome. It's that they rushed it along with a whole lotta other stuff. It needed to be fleshed out more to do her character arc proper justice. It was intended and thought to need more episodes if not more seasons. Most agree they rushed the end. The show runners were over it and wanted to work on the Star Wars trilogy they were supposed to do - that worked out well for them and the series. It's sad to put so much care and effort in, even after they ran out of source material, then just rush to get it over with. The stray coffee cups and water bottles left in scenes in the final season imo is pretty indicative of the reduction in care and attention to detail in the final season. I don't hate it but it's not up to previous standards set.
@SerbAtheist Жыл бұрын
It's not rushed. In fact, it was painfully slow. In fact if you weren't concerned about Dany's mental state at least by the time she was barbecuing the Tarlys, you were watching this show with your eyes closed. As to Star Wars easily debunkable conspiracies (number of episodes was finalized way before Star Wars) the less said the better. And if they were in a 'rush to get over with the show' why did they spend 2 years instead of the usual 1 for the final season, which by all accounts has some of the most technically challenging shooting in the entire series?
@dfunkt2291 Жыл бұрын
@@SerbAtheist you might think the final season up to the standard of story telling set by the series but I don't and I'm not the only one. Just because I have a different opinion doesn't mean I'm an idiot watching with eyes closed. Rude and unnecessary. If you actually read what I wrote above I never said anything about the actions not being believable for the character at all, in fact I stated that above, so I don't know what you're banging on about with Dany's mental state comment. No shit she had issues. Simply, I don't think certain characters, hers included, had their final arcs fleshed enough... It's a simple matter of thinking they could have used more time... Which was the original plan for very good reasons.

@@dfunkt2291 'Just because I have a different opinion doesn't mean I'm an idiot watching with eyes closed.' Where the hell did I call you an idiot. Smart people can be blinded by their biases as well, especially given how unconventional GOT is when it comes to storytelling. In fact it's quite often that new and revolutionary works are mocked, ridiculed and even hated simply for not playing by the old playbook, for example impressionist paintings were once dismissed as children drawings. But if you care to listen, I believe some of my experience might be of value. The reason I was able to catch that Dany was up to no good was that I literally went through this in REAL LIFE. Look at my username. We Serbs had our own, much less attractive, Daenerys Targaryen that answered to the name of Slobodan Milošević. He was gonna preserve Yugoslavia, bring peace, make sure Serbian interests were respected, protect Serbs in Kosovo. By the time we realized we were duped it was too f-ing late! This is why I'll forever be cynical of everyone proclaiming they're gonna 'break the wheel,' whatever the wheel may be. For years I believed the Serbs were only the good guys and the innocent victims of the Yugoslav wars. For years I didn't believe the Srebrenica massacre happened. When I slowly learned of credible evidence that my perspective was wrong, it was just like what you, Jon, Tyrion and the rest of the audience were feeling when Dany went rogue except the dead people were actually dead for real, never to get up after the director yelled 'cut!' So yeah, be glad you were only duped by a stupid TV show.

Yeah, you're entitled to your opinions, but you're not entitled to your own facts, and spreading blatant misinformation about D&D and their motivations very much counts in this regard. See, it's not enough for you to say D&D made a bad season, or even that they are bad showrunners. Big whoop! Even the greatest artists have produced subpar works. No, the reason you're so eager to believe and propagate blatant falsehoods is that you want to permanently delegitimize them. Nope, they weren't just people who made a bad call or dropped the ball. They were these greedy caricatures who purposely sledgehammered their own show, thinking they'd jump to another one, but, oh, jokes on them, they got cancelled! What a story! In this way, you can completely bury the final season in concrete and never ever consider the points it makes seriously. You can protect your ego and ignore the fact you spent 7 seasons rooting for a bloodthirsty genocidal maniac. You can keep on believing that you'd never fall victim to propaganda and that the causes and people you support will always be good ones.

The beauty and tragedy of Denaerys is that her final episodes mirror her brother Viserys’s first episodes. He once basically said to Jorah that the love the Dothraki gave to Dany was something no one would show him so he would need money for an army with which he would subdue them to rule. Dany says to Jon that the love he received after the Great War/Battle was something she’d never been shown in Westeros and said right then that if fear was her only means then she would use it to rule. Also a great touch to have Jorah Mormont, a Northmanmof Bear Isle, say to Dany back in his first appearances the line about a beast living in every man that wakes when you put a sword in his hand. Dany had been showing the signs of this since season 2, and more so as each season advanced. The clever thing was that as a viewer we kind of didn’t notice due to our bias of wanting to see her go from being downtrodden and abused and controlled to a woman in control of her own destiny to a freedom fighter liberating slaves… by the time the time comes to leave for Westeros we were on her side cheering her on rather than seeing that the idea of seizing a throne you didn’t care about until you had a taste of small power in the Khalasaar… in a land that wants you dead… just because it’s in your head that it’s your birthright… a kingdom that only exists because your ancestor subjugated it and forced 7 kingdoms to surrender or cooperate… and you find yourself forcing your views on other cultures and punishing sons for sins of their ancestors and fathers… and becoming obsessed with gestures of submission and proof of loyalty… and resenting others for receiving well earned admiration… all in pursuit of said throne… you see how subtly and obviously it’s all been there all along. In the end she fulfilled her father’s plans for King’s Landing. And Cersei fulfilled her own prophecy when she said to Ned that she and Jamie entered this world in each other’s arms and that’s how they’d leave it as well.

One can find parallels between Viserys's short and pitiful journey and Dany's much longer and more grandiose journey all day long: (S8E6 spoilers ahead!) 1) Viserys' crown? Melted. Dany's throne? Melted. 2) Viserys careless when the promise of a crown was at hand? Check. Dany careless when the Iron Throne was at hand? Check. 3) Viserys and Daenerys both failing to understand the culture of the place in which they seek power. 4) Viserys and Daenerys both believing that having people be indebted to them is a surefire path to power and influence. 5) Viserys and Daenerys both thinking they could be as violent as they want without consequence (Viserys because of the laws of Vaes Dothrak, Dany because of Drogon). 6) Viserys and Daenerys both taking their frustrations out on the innocent (Dany's baby, the citizens of KL) 7) Viserys and Daenerys both shocked when the final hammer drops on them. 8) Viserys and Daenerys both obsessed with their legacy all the while not realizing just how fragile and precarious their position actually is, as people they trust talk behind their backs. 9) Viserys and Daenerys both killed by someone who was indebted to them (Viserys gave his sister to Drogo, Dany rescued Jon). 10) Viserys and Daenerys both abandoned by the only person left that loved them as a lost cause.

I didn't think Cersei was that bad after she became Queen. I mean she essentially fought foreign invaders. But never did anything to the people of King's Landing. It's not like she cut the food and started executing people. Maybe her regime would have been a quiet one if Dany had not invaded. I feel like the writers should have made in a strong case that Cersei needs to be stopped then you have Dany coming in as the perfect savior. And then Dany become mad as well.

In the end there isn’t much Jon can do. Jaime has been for Cercei since day 1- he was a good man but he always clearly lived for her. Dany got to a goal that wasn’t what she imagined it to be, in a land that hated her, believing she was destined and the greatness to save them all (that alone is madness) Cercei was in full denial. Euron simply missed. And the Bells in the end simply mean a big decision or big event, so them ringing them for surrender makes sense.

@@LS13. You make it sound like good endings is some kind or rarity. I've finished about 112 shows and books in my life time and GoT has the worst written season finale i've seen so far. The key is logic and consistency. Those are the rules we were given by the show. Every character survives by making as few mistakes as possible and learning from them, those are the rules this fictional universe abides by. In S1 we saw Ned provoke Tywin Lannister > confront Cersei > Ignore LF > arrested and killed in the finale, and yet no one complained about how the ending was written because it made sense. In S3 we see Robb break his sacred vow > ignore Roose Bolton at every turn > execute Lord Karstark > and then butchered at the red wedding, and yet no one complained about how the ending was written because it made sense. In S5 we see Jon befriend the "enemy" > ignore Stannis > ignore Ser Allister as usual > go against centuries of tradition and the wishes of the Nights Watch > and then branded a traitor and killed by his own men, and yet no one complained about how the ending was written because it made sense. S8 however was a complete disaster for the show. Tyrion makes a mistake every episode, Jon is barely a character, the golden company had no horses, Dany kind of forgot she was at war, and list goes on. Every time you think you've seen a good point that supports the outcome, along comes an even better point that goes against the outcome, it's so divisive because there was no logical consistency. Instead of being entertained and satisfied with the story, the fans were arguing with one another and making memes on reddit. That's not what a good written ending looks like. The wrapping up of plot points and character arcs in S8 simply made no sense whatsoever, but then again how could it with just 6 episodes? That's an impossible task, which is why HBO offered them more episodes but D&D refused cause of burn out fatigue and were apparently too arrogant to pass on the touch to someone else. If GRRM ever finishes the books, the first thing you'll notice will be the enormous difference in quality, sound logic, consistency and of course much better dialogue than muh queen, because those have and will always be the hallmark of good writing.
