Yay Dude! 😀 Just found your channel... I'm an old geezer, 60 this year, started travelling 1986 and never really stopped. Cycled most of the world now and I can't stop till I drop... Wow! This video of yours brings back memories. I went across Amazonia in 1989 from Bolivia to Venezuela via Manaus... back then was no road after Porto Vehlo and had to get a crazy boat to Manaus. From there on mud roads to Boa Vista and Venezuela. Your journey is great for bringing back memories as I had no camera or video back in 1989. Next month January, if you are in The Guyanas maybe I'll see you... I will be there 🙂

Hi! Wow, I can only wonder how it felt travelling through this part of the world back in the day. These days everything is so connected (I'm literally writing this message while sitting in some extra shabby road restaurant in the middle of nowhere), few decades ago this must have been completely different experience altogether :) Would be super cool to meet, but afterwards I'm planning (spoilers alert!) to get into boat back to Humaita and start pedaling my way to Porto Velho and Peru. I mean, the idea of this journey was to cycling across South America, from Atlantic ocean to the Pacific, so Manaus is just a little detour :) I'm planning to start cycling up the Andes at some point. Anyway, thanks for such a cool message, greetings from the Amazon!

@@DonShapoka Thanks for the reply. Yes, it was a very different world back then with no internet, mobile phones, or even landline telephones. We had the Lonely Planet guide 'South America on a Shoestring' with hand-drawn maps by author Geoff Crowther. That was all that was available. In 1988 we had visited embassies of the countries we were planning to visit and sat with consular staff chatting about road conditions, ferries, and what to expect. Once you arrived there and left the airport, you were well and truly on your own with no contact with the outside world. I loved this disconnect so much that I still travel this way. While in the wilds of Yukon this year I shared a hut with an guy and he got a 'ping' on his mobile with a text from his dad that his football team had just won. That one thing destroyed weeks of being at one with the world for me. I personally can't deal with instant contact with the places I so much wanted to be far away from. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your trip and I'll enjoy your videos...

For people who have the same bagage rack, you can modify it by placing a slightly wider iron or aluminium tube over the thinner tubes which were bending inwards.

Thanks Don for another peek into your world. Good luck with your patched up bike rack. It seems like you had constant flat tires in the beginning of your trip. About the time that you stopped getting flats, your bike rack started giving you trouble. Maybe the bike will be trouble free for awhile. That sucks about the dead Anaconda. I'm hopeful that you will see more snakes once you get into the really remote areas. Good night from North Carolina.
@DonShapoka
@DonShapoka 14 күн бұрын
Hey dude! Yeah, unfortunately I find far more dead snakes than ones that are alive. Today I found my first Emerald tree boa (Corallus caninus) - flat as a pancake on the road... 😅And tropical herping is surprisingly hard, biodiversity is insane, but density of animals is low; dense and thick rainforest habitats make things even more tricky. Greetings from the Amazon! :)

Good to hear from you. We are all waiting for the KZbin post: “KZbinr eaten by giant jaguar. Nothing left but his gear and a smelly pair of tennis shoes.” About your bike rack; When you get to Manaus take note of the small motorcycles carrying propane tanks or huge water jugs on the back. That’s the rack you need….steel meant to support fifty kilos. Yup, it’s heavier. Forget the jaguar-dengue, malaria, and the sting rays are the cautionary tale. I did all my camping in the Amazon during rainy seasons. Not much you can do about the hardships. One of your fans cheering you on. The rains will get much worse. You can’t imagine! Abracos!

Hi! Thanks for the message! Regarding my bike, well, I'll try to look for some options in Manaus, frankly, was thinking about this option (getting one for the motorbike), but it is really difficult to adjust anything to my bike - size is the issue. And regarding natural hazards: well, it is part of the journey, eh? :D Greetings!

I love this, I found this road on google maps and was doing research to see if it is possible to bikepack it, when your video appears! Do you think it would be easier, harder or about the same to cycle in the other direction? Keep it up, downhills and tailwinds my friend!
@DonShapoka
@DonShapoka 9 күн бұрын
Hi! Well, this road in particular (BR-219) is really all flat, so I guess it is about the same. Some stretches of Trans-Amazonian highway (BR-230 - the one I was cycling before) are quite hilly, but then again, it wouldn't make much difference cycling it from either direction. Rain (especially in the rainy season) and dust (in the dry season) makes cycling on both quite challenging. If you are looking for more info on details, just drop me message on Instagram (it is in the description). Greetings from the rainy Amazon :)

Really nice man. Pretty cool places. Try setting the pressure of the tires a little bit down, between 25 and 30 psi, this will absorb part of the impact that's hitting the aluminum rack, specially on dirty roads. Be safe
@DonShapoka
@DonShapoka 11 күн бұрын
Hey Rogerio! How are you doing? Yeah, lately I'm keeping pressure on my tires quite low and moving really slowly :) On the other hand, it would be hardly even possible to cycle fast on these roads (especially this time of the year...). Greetings from some middle-of-nowhere roads restaurant to you and your wife :)

I once wrote in my cycling reports of a trip somewhere in Africa that the only thing that influences the emotional well-being of a white male European are the bike's mechanics, and the overall state of the bike . Also, my point of view is that when a bike Constructor company designs a bike, which is not able to carry a 10€ decatlon bicycle rack, it should be condemned. A 10€ decatlon rack I put it through the test of more than 40000km of touring and is definitely approved by me. Even the Lithuanian washboards didn't break it. Please keep up your good work and as a youtube bike vlogger I didn't see anyone that came near iohan georguiev, but you have certainly the potential.
@DonShapoka
@DonShapoka 13 күн бұрын
Just a tiny correction: only things that have influence on emotional well-being of a white male European are the overall state of the bike, camera and laptop 😅 If there's even a slightest issue with those three things mentioned, well, then I consider situation as somewhat annoying at least 😅 Although I'm not complaining, just being honest :)
