If we're looking at it as a gaming/streaming rig, consoles are going to be cheaper every time. The console is 500. The online play subscription is 60 for 1 year. Assuming a console gen lasts 6-9 years, you have paid 540 at most for online subs for 1 year. Your total console cost comes out to 1040, over the course of 9 years. Could you build a pc for a similar price and get the same performance? Maybe, but you're also spending that 1040 up front instead of over time. If you need to do video rendering/editing, you would never spend 1040 on a pc, you'd be looking at at least 2-3k. Could that pc play games better? Sure. But that pc is also a different use case. In this conversation the small percentage of video editors aren't being disregarded, they're just not relevant because we're not talking about video editing, we're talking about gaming.

I'm so happy that Blender benchmarks are included in these. I'm still running a 1070, and while I can manage perfectly fine in Blender, it looks like I'd be looking at a stupidly hefty performance increase with even just the 3070. just got a 2070 (base) and I think I'll wait until maybe the 4000 or even 5000 series launch or never again....honestly the games I've been looking at have been so few and far between it's a huge question if I should consider upgrading. lots of games I've looked at are still last gen (ps4 era) and it's not impressive (shadow of war, metal gear solid 5, etc.); the only game that was modern was RDR 2 and I already got bored of that game before even finishing the game. I thoroughly enjoyed the revolver building and gun play but it overall just lacked enough depth to keep going. I've often found myself digging and pining for heavy RPG games that have lots of gameplay but not so heavy that I gotta clear my schedule to play it to the end just to keep up with where I was (looking at you baldur's gate and dragon age origins AND eye of the beholder!) and NO. "skyrim" doesn't count. the entire elder scrolls series is de facto not counted. it's either too clunky mechanics or just a real slog to find any fulfillment of joy with those games.

@@rootntoot2215 I built my first computer back in august after my surprisingly garbage msi laptop took a dump (windows 10 and RDR 2 killed it) specs: ryzen 9 3900x, 64GB 3200 mhz RAM, 2070 (upgraded from a RX 5500 initially), 750 watt PSU, dark rock pro 4 mounted (need that cooling bad!) went kinda cheap on the case but I still mounted a 360mm top fan for added air flow (god the airflow sucks!). mobo is a b-550F gaming but my next build I'm going for is a workstation computer: 5950x (hell yeah waiting for it!), 128GB 3600mhz RAM, another dark rock pro 4, 1200 watt PSU, x570 god tier, and an 011 lian li. (also pop in two 360mm fants to really get that air flow going) considering possibly upgrading to a 4080 or whatever but most likely going to keep my 2070 and then pop in the RX 5500 and sell my first computer off to a friend who needs a good college computer (which this is super-specced for anything college related)

I know I still have a 960 GTX it's just so expensive to upgrade these days and this card was still 250 bucks back in 2016. THe ps5 and Series X have 4 k and ssd now and they are 500. So I might just game on consoles from now on. to upgrade my PC to be as good as or better than the new consoles coming out next month will cost around 1700 dollars. ​@howvery_ weirdly enough I have an old lenovo legion laptop with gtx 1060 and an old desktop with rtx 3070 😅 if you didn't buy yet - don't. Buy rtx 4060ti. Same price, same performance except 4060ti has dlss 3, AI frame generation and noticeably better raytracing performance. Basically more fps on newer games, the same fps on older ones. Edit: noticed you're talking about laptops 😅 same thing applies but a laptop with 3070 will be cheaper than with a 4060ti bc it will probably have ddr4 instead of ddr5, older cpu etc.
