I’m done with eBay - no place for small sellers

Been buying and selling on eBay for 22 years. After having 210 comics stolen by very impatient buyer, I’ve ended all listings and I’m done. If people can file a claim before the item is even delivered in a reasonable time and get their money back despite documentation - what’s the point? I spend so much time listing stuff then it either doesn’t sell, is sold at low price, or now add stolen to the list. It’s not worth the trouble. eBay use to be a joy to buy and sell. The fees are ridiculous for small sellers and they hide your listings if you don’t pay to promote them. It’s not fun. No protection for small sellers - they don’t want us.

My final nail was a set of cards I sent to a guy who claimed non-receipt. Meanwhile they were returned to me because he gave me an invalid address. I re-shipped at MY expense, he received them, and then ebay gave him a refund. Maddening! Now I only use Atomic Mall and Whatnot. Will never go back to Fleabay.

Yes they are! Unless you have profits coming in daily, it makes no sense. We don’t get paid until after customer gets their item so we have to have extra cash in our bank account to ship. eBay use to not be this way.

Oh and another thing….eBay changes your prices to rock bottom without consulting you if you allow offers. You can set your lowest offer to take at 3.00 and somehow eBay will take the liberty and sell your item for one dollar. eBay needs to be sued.

I've been selling on eBay for a bit over a decade, and I've noticed a steady decline over the last few years. I no longer list more items than my shop allowance, because I don't want to pay the extra fees for nothing. Instead, I'm doing what I can to attract customers to my Ebid shop, where the fee structure's better and the management don't play these stupid games. I sell on multiple platforms, and it's got to the point where I see eBay as the "loss leader" department. Every time I sell an item on eBay, I enclose a flyer promoting my Ebid shop and advising the customer that I've got a lot more stuff listed there at lower prices. It's going to take a long time to build up the sort of traffic on Ebid that I used to get on eBay, but it'll be worth it if I can eliminate my dependence on a platform that keeps moving the goalposts.

Ya, I'm thinking about quiting too. The fact that they are hiding listings is crazy! On the website and app they have a "we've streamlined your search to show you the best listings. See more results". For a search there was 102 listings for "base camp duffel" once I clicked the show more results, there was 109 listings. Guess which of the 7 were hidden? Yup, mine! I have no idea why because it is priced competitively, great title, it's promoted, and it has a good description.

What was the promoted amount? They push promoted but if 100 people promote the first spots go to the higher promotion %. I've seen people promoting at 25% and higher. Find a shirt for a buck and if it's worth $75 they're willing let ebay have a bigger chunk to get it sold

I've used Mercari almost exclusively for about 3 or 4 years. It's good to list a little higher of price, as you can then 'promote' it occasionally for a few dollars less and it moves listing to the top. I've had only a few minor issues

I sold on there from 99 to around 2003. It was fun. Everyone was a small seller. Buy it now was just beginning. There was no back stabbing from other sellers or buyers. Just friendly competition. I had a few minor instances but I always paid extra to make it so the buyer upon arrival at their address had to sign they received the item. The post office then forwarded me the signed receipt. With a signed receipt from the buyer when the item arrived there were no scams. I had nothing but positive feedback and gave the same. Commercialization was only beginning back then. Shipping was cheap through the post office. It was fun until commercialization (stores) and the beginning of free shipping I was unwilling to do began. So I stopped selling never to return. Besides now the IRS has it's hands in every transaction and a 1099 has to be completed at tax time. At a thrift store nearby I recently talked to a husband and wife Ebay seller team. I recognized them right off. They had quit their jobs to sell full time selling stuff they find at thrifts and yard sales. The guy said they were doing really good. I asked him about the 1099. He said they had not looked in to that yet and had no clue how much tax they had to pay in. I just smiled and walked away. They will get bent over. Anyone knowing they have to pay taxes on every penny of their Ebay sales might as well set some cash aside from each sale they make for the tax man. My guess is those two had quite an eye opener when they did their returns.

Shopping on eBay is the worst experience. You have to look through hundreds of listings sometimes and the search terms don't matter it seems. Then, if it's auto parts, their compatibility tool to match the parts to the car is JUNK, useless. One third to half the parts shown are wrong.

Hey Jaabo Like everything else, eBay has become more than it was ever designed to be. These behemoth companies have become so powerful and so faceless that it’s impossible to deal with them. I’ve listed items that rarely get views and, unless you pay for a promotion, they will never sell! And, as for buying from eBay. It’s become incredibly difficult to find anything listed for a reasonable price. It’s become a place for professional eBayers to flog their overpriced items. I’m specifically talking about collectibles such as LEGO. The days of finding bargains has long gone!

Yup ebay is out of their minds, now it's all about the algorithm thing, gotta answer 50 questions about an item which is pretty hard considering an item can be used with no stickers on it so you can't just say "I'm selling a used item" blah blah, you gotta answer color, size, where it was made, when it was made, by who was it made, what year was it made, when did you poop last..I mean cmon, a listing should be quick, not an hr researching an item that will be a 5 buck profit..seriously..I list 10 items and daily have to revise about 9, I need that time sourcing, not filling out a novel size item questionnaire

I've been selling on eBay for around 6 years and ever since they changed how views are counted, I seem to get 0 views on most items. I understand that people may just be not interested in certain items but I feel like eBay genuinely does hide smaller sellers. I feel like the frequency of items being sold has slowed down extensively over the last few years. I tend to wait until there are seller offers such as "80% off final value fees" as the amount eBay takes normally is pretty ridiculous IMO. Nothing worse than when the excitement of selling reduces to the point of non existence.

agreed same thing happened to me with a watch I sold. The lady left the feedback and I got fed up with her so refunded her after she complained she didn't get it. would you know it the watch was delivered the next day. I was a buyer since 2001, 100% feedback,. Recently started selling my sport cards collection on there and they decided they will now withhold the funds of new sellers for 90 days. Yet, they take every fee immediately, leaving me to pay for supplies, shipping, everything, with absolutely ZERO payment. How the Fck can someone sell and pay all expenses, including every possible fee they can gouge me for, and despite my feedback I am still literally funding the whole thing, while they took their fees directly from my bank account. Just started selling this year. eBay has shorted me around 350$ I called tech support. Everybody who was lower on the food chain did the simple math and seen that I was very cheated. Every time they connected me with someone who could actually help they kept asking for bank statements and didn’t want to do the simple math. after a week straight of calling and them refusing to help I sent my bank statements and I haven’t heard anything in almost 2 months. I'm watching this a year after it was uploaded. I just started reselling. I watched A LOT of the videos on here, joined some reddits, long before I listed my first item. It sounds like the buyer ran a scam on those comics. They knew what they were doing, they took advantage of eBay's policies. When they stated that you were taking it personally, that was the tip off.

Ebay sucks just in general now. For both sellers AND buyers. As someone who has bought plenty of retro games through Ebay, the experience/process has become a lot worse in recent years. First with the introduction of "import taxes" on items being shipped from the US to Canada (which was never the case before). This made me stop viewing American listings as the import taxes simply made the items too expensive. Sellers on Ebay were ALREADY asking for top dollar as it was. But with the import taxes it made it even worse to the point where it isn't worth it buying from America unless you're ok paying extortionate prices. Then recently they imposed an HST tax on all items from Canadian sellers which is essentially a 13% mark up on any item you buy... And now it's the final straw for me...Tracked packages no longer arrive in your mailbox like they have in the past. You get a notice to go pick them up from a local post office. Enough is enough. They've made the items even more expensive through the various charges and taxes which is already bad enough, but now they also expect the buyer to drive and waste their time just to go pick these items up. Which defeats the whole purpose of shopping online...CONVENIENCE. I agree with the video though. It also sucks for sellers as well, mostly due to scammers and the site hiding their listings (if that's true). Overall the entire experience has gotten a lot more expensive and a lot worse. I'm done with Ebay. The negatives have now outweighed the positives and it's no longer worth it.

I had a similar thing (but different) happen to me with a potential customer. You know how when someone "likes" something you can send them an offer ? Well I sent him an offer since he "liked" the item. Then he messaged me and jumped all over me for taking up his time sending him offers that he wasn't interested in. I was like you apparently hit the like button weather you intended to or not. He replied back and swore up and down that he did not. we even got into a little heated argument on the messenger part of Ebay. He finally said DO NOT ever again send me offers. So I blocked him to prevent that.

I recently blocked a buyer who accepted an offer and then put a note at the bottom, to only charge them 2 bucks for shipping, because the item should fit in an envelope. The item WAS in an envelope but, it weighs what it weighs. I messaged them a few times and got them to agree to cancel the transaction. This buyer had very few ratings, so I decided I don't need their BS again.

Yeh they're awful. I have a few things left on there, and after they're gone, I'm out. Close account. They keep taking listings down for BS reasons, while leaving the same exact item up from other sellers, then lying and saying that it takes a long time to remove items from other sellers. FOUND MINE THOUGH... didn't take more than an eye blink to get mine taken down, but these larger sellers don't seem to have that problem! I hate liars and I hate bullies, and Ebay are both.

I've been paying 50% of the suggested fee. Seems to do the trick for electronics. I need it gone so 3-5% is better than holding stock. I'm horrible at keeping things but I know I need to move it so that's been my goal. I know there will be products that I'll lose money after shipping and eBay fee but sometimes a loss is a loss. that's one of the big problems with ebay now, ebay will hide your listings unless you pay their promotion fees. by the time you pay all the different fees you are pushing 30% in fees or better

As a seller and buyer on eBay for 24 years I approach it as I approach life. I don;t let the jerks get under my skin at all. Fortunately these bad buyer occurances are few and far between. Also I look at it like I get the things I sell for very little and make hundreds to thousands of percent profit over cost of goods so who cares if there is the very rare bad transaction. It is like spolage or shoplifting in a normal business. It is to be expected. Simple as that. It's not like we are selling at a garage sale at our house and getting relatively nothing.

Mercari is worse when it comes to being a buyers site !!!! Raise your prices 5% and promote your listings 5%. Problem solved! eBay is the best site to sell on period ! Definitely not 100% on seller side all the time. But there is a cost sometimes to do business. Contact the buyer on that sale that you got screwed on via telephone and get your payment back thru them. Or ask them to ship item back

how was the buyer able to open INR case only after 3 business days since they purchased the item? it was sold on thursday, and INR opened on tuesday? INR can be opened only after latest estimated delivery day (and only 1-2 days after that date)? So how is it possible? Was it local sale? Next point. Lets imagine it was already past latest estimated delivery date and INR is open. Did you upload tracking number in the case? If your item arrives while the INR case open with uploaded tracking in the case, that INR will be closed in YOUR favor. INR stays open for some time to allow for item to arrive. If tracking shows shows recent item movement through postal service, ebay will NOT refund buyer. Only if INR expires, and you did not upload tracking, or there is no recent item movement and you did not refund buyer yourself, Ebay will step in, close the case, and refund buyer, which will result in "case closed without seller resolution" defect on your account. Open INR case does NOT mean you need to refund buyer right away. Ebay or buyer did not steal your comics, you gave them away for free.

Yeah the way Ebay does the report a problem thing is bad. I have 2 items that I ordered on Ebay 1 auction, 1 of the items was not an item in the auction. I contacted the seller them same day, and they said the would send the correct item. No mention of the wrong item, I have not seen anything yet. Now the seller has other bad feedback so I am guessing I am stuck. I think you are making the right call, I am starting to worry about Ebay just from a buyers point of view.

The thing that annoys me is when I ship a box across the country on UPS and the charge should be $13 when I select and print the label but I get charged $30 and cant get an explanation of why the upcharge and UPS says get Ebay to ask them and well we know how that goes.

"should be" according to WHO? The box dimensions and weight matter, as does the specific address. If you are seeing THAT BIG of a difference, I'm guessing your 'package specifics' are off. It also tells me that your USPS customers are likely being charged more ON DELIVERY (something UPS & FEDex can't do)... because the weight or box types are off. Getting the shipping right is absolutely a challenge. Having accurate measurements and weight is vital. If eBay is still an issue, move to ANOTHER OPTION and make sure the tracking numbers are copied over to eBay quickly & accurately.

@@terrymercer8266 If a seller gets the USPS shipping cost wrong, it is not the buyer that gets charged. The USPS just back charges the seller through their eBay account. Have had this happen a couple of times. Also got a $1.50 credit once because my package was lighter than I listed it.

@@little-mountain-trading3560 - It really depends on HOW the shipper paid... if they paid at the USPS COUNTER (not eBay, not Pirate Ship, or another 'shipper specific' account) - the BUYER is who would be charged. And while those are the only ways I ship things sold on eBay. But in some rural carrier areas, if the weight or dimensions are wrong, the carrier will still try to charge the buyer (without the shipper knowing). This happened to one of my reseller friends a few times - when he was first starting, USING THE WRONG BOX (express box, but priority label... cubic label, in flat rate box... etc. etc.). Though the Pirate Ship - I get a credit about once or twice a month. Through the eBay shipping, I seldom ever get a credit, but have had them 'correct a charge' (billing my account) a couple times. It's more likely a buyer is charged when the carrier is lazy... they tend to hold the package hostage. Those dimensions & weight accuracy really do matter.

It is when I buyer clicks "where's my item" - it automatically files the claim. Some people can't figure out the tracking information that is easily found on the auction page though

I would hate for someone to be forced to sell those comics to a store or someone for pennies per comic. But that may be your only option? I see comics at flea markets and they have high prices on them but I have found some cheap ones that I liked just because I'm not a high society person of wealth and good taste! Plus I was raised to be honest and pay for the things even if they are crappy.

I've had the same exact issue with a buyer. Buyer claimed item didn't arrive for 15 days but it had only been 5 days?? So crazy. Ebay ended up siding with the buyer :( Was told to appeal after the shipment says delivered. Quite frustrating and disappointing overall. Hopefully Ebay fixes their various problems soon.

I thought I had the same problem.the other day. Tracking said delivered buyer said didn't get it... I was about to flip but thought I'd give it a day maybe usps would deliver the following day. ( maybe got stolen ) but next day I track package and it.went from delivered to going the opposite direction across the country then no movement...sucks. only 7 dollar item so not a big deal thankfully but the post office does screw up alot

Sometimes our carrier lies and says that something is delivered so that he/she meets their deadline. Then, they deliver it the next day. It's really annoying.

Strangely enough, I second his feelings on 2020! I sold a good bit and learned a ton, traveled to destinations without the crowds, and spent great time with family and friends. Heck, we even got to dine INDOORS the 2nd week of May because we’re from Texas. Life was good..

..... selling on eBay in 2022. I've been and still am an eBay seller - since 1998, and boy has eBay changed. Most of what you said is correct - but 1 case - if you have excellent feedback - wont do anything - so it in and of itself isnt a reason to quit selling on eBay. That being said - yes selling on eBay sucks. Its a chore, eBay is abusive to sellers, eBay has insanely bad CS, and almost always finds for the buyer - and those are eBays GOOD points. Lets not get into VERO issues - talking to VERO is like talking to a pile of wet cardboard. If the items you sell (like mine (which are not the same as your items)) are gated on Amazon, then unless you are giving up on selling online altogether - eBay is still the #2 platform after Amazon, and you "have no choice" but to continue. You cant/wont be able to live off Mercari and unless you want to spend alot of money on Seller Cloud etc so you can sell on Walmart ... you will need to stick with eBay. For all the above reasons and more, eBay is known in online circles as the San Jose mafia. You pay how they want, when they want, to whom the want, they break your legs if they choose, hide you and your listings - and theres nothing you can do. Anyone that logs on to eBays platform, does so with whats known as a "shrinkwrap license". That means that what ever the TOS (terms of service) say, you agree. You (and I) agree to let eBay abuse us .... and its the same on every site. We all want (desperately) eBay to be the white hat, but sadly they just dont care. They are "too big to fail" and they do as they please as it suits them. And yes, if you lie down with the dogs, you wake up with fleas - but sometimes - theres no choice/options. Yes, eBay took advantage of you, yes eBay tried to steal your money - been that way since John Donohue (smaller sellers are just noise) - but one (as bad as it hurts and Ive gone through it myself) shouldnt make you walk away. The only way out is to make MORE sales to push down the 1 bad one, and over time after a year it will go off your record. eBay has 10 THOUSAND employees - most do nothing all day - they just use eBays free gym, and then have a late lunch over @Walkers West - the eBay restaurant - drowing their fat bonus's in drinks paid for by sellers ..... its sad but its what selling on eBay is. This reply could be 10 pages about all the crooked things they do - but its not about them, its about YOU. You do what you need to do to survive and try (and Im guilty of this myself) to not let it get personal. best wishes and good selling!

@@trailersandtea - YW! Just please remember that "revenge" is a dish best served cold - ie - be on EVERY platform you can not just eBay. Sweet "revenge" is making the same sale on Mercari or Poshmark and not eBay. In the last year, my sales on Mercari was 17k (and that with Mercari being MUCH less sophisticated than eBay) and Im hoping to increase that number as well. Its alot to juggle - but hard work pays off! Best of luck!

sam gorin tells it just like it is. Nothing but the truth. I too have bought/sold on ebay since 1998 and 100% agree with all said. In a nutshell: if you want to make a living selling online, ebay is the ONLY choice for you. Pay a 2% promotion fee for each and every listing. Sucks man, yes it does, but that is what it takes to make the listings visible. And I'll share a big secret with you that is guaranteed to keep your listings visible and WILL increase your sales: CREATE ATLEAST 5 NEW LISTINGS EACH AND EVERY DAY, WITHOUT FAIL! That's what the "algorithm" requires to keep you relevant. And if you haven't already, open a basic storefront. Costs a little bit, not too much, but you WILL reap many times a return for that investment. FREE SHIPPING AND RETURNS should be a standard across the board or your listings (incorporate the cost into the listings). Being successful on ebay isn't easy but to be, those are a few of the things that must be done. One other thing: block all buyers with less than 10 feedback (eliminates bulk of scammers - not all of them, but I assure you, it helps tremendously). Hope that helps and hang in there!

Same situation happened to me. I had a package get stuck in Memphis. It's been barely a week and I get a message saying they didn't get their package. And like you said, I've waited more than a couple weeks for some packages. I sent this person a message saying just give it a few more days and I'll refund you if it hasn't arrived in another week. I thought it was a fair deal. But this person goes and files a claim on there saying they want a refund. And ebay says I have like 2 days before they step in and take it out of my account. This item was sold for about $150. I had to pay that and they got it like 3 days later. I've never been so mad in all my life. I tried to do something where they give me that money back because it shows it was delivered but there's no options. I tried everything. Ebay is the WORST.

I was a loyal, 100% positive feedback seller/buyer for 18 years, and I'm so done with them, there is no protection for Sellers, and trying to talk to a real person on the phone is almost impossible. Ebay has gone from a decent marketplace to a hellscape of scammers and buyers who have way more clout than long time sellers.

Me too!! I'm finished. Eight items sold, 3 were returned, AND one was swapped for a similar burnt out item. All three ended up costing me money for return shipping. The buyers have WAYYYYY too much leverage. This maybe fine for new stuff, but it's not fine when it comes to things like vintage tubes. Ebay--your policy re: small sellers sucks.

My biggest issues with eBay #1'being charged fee on full price including shipping. Shipping is not $$ gained. I also think eBay is ripping off the shipping services by charging a fee for shipping. Total b.s. #2 holding funds and crappy customer service for seller's eBay need to be 100% replaced.

eBay has needed serious competition for a long time. I too began selling around the same time and it was a GREAT community. I really miss that. It is really unfortunate because buying and selling/auctions can be an absolute blast. I have never had a store nor sold full time, but now you have to be a machine to sell. I retired from flipping 8 years ago. I just got back into the game the week before Christmas. At this point, I have pulled everything off of eBay. They are an unflushable turd circling the bowl now. I'm in the middle of packing and moving. I've donated about half of my inventory. Once I get to where I'm going I will use an app that I came across that will let me list once and it will cross-list on 4-5 platforms. EBay will NOT be one of them.

Ebay truly hates sellers . I ignore Ebay's useless marketing messages and " advice for seller " messages . Back around 2018 , I got a threating message from ebay that not reading these type of messages sent by them is bad for my account and would and does cause restrictions and penalties for doing so. Man I wish I screenshotted that message. We as seller pay high fees and endure limitless regulations and policy because of their out of control and crazy overhead. Their huge marketing and research teams ,, their high priced upper level execs. It comes out of the sellers pockets.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I heard that the new CEO of eBay wants them to focus on selling items $800 and over. This is their business model at this point. I think this helps explain their lack of concern for small sellers. Seems quite odd to me that they would have this sort of philosophy for a platform where a vast majority of items sell for under $50.

I finally got fed up with the way ebay ALWAYS favors the buyer and basically tells sellers they can pound sand. Closed my store there and moved all my stuff to Atomic Mall. So much better! I can even leave negative f/b for buyers again if I need to! lol

I had a similar situation with Amazon. The shipment was delayed due to USPS (DeJoy's Folly) problems but was still en route when the buyer filed a claim against me. I informed the customer that the book would eventually arrive, but he wanted his $60 back, and Amazon gave it to him. Of course the book arrived shortly after Amazon took the money from my account to give the customer. If one wishes to sell online this is an example of the problems one encounters. Amazon (and based on this video, EBAY) do not back up their sellers when it comes to problems beyond the seller's control.

Not only do I photograph the whole packaging process and upload it to the buyer I also make a KZbin video if it’s supposed to do something and post that as part of the description. The only person protecting the sellers rights is the sellers so I do all this to accomplish that.

This happens a lot but I just don’t care and continue to list and sell. I block people left and right if they ask stupid stuff or have a bad history of leaving negative feedback to buyers. Once had an item not received case when item was delayed for weeks. eBay gave me 10 Days to get delivered. Then took my money and item was delivered 2 days later. Appealed this with eBay and no joke 8 months later eBay said I lost the appeal for not delivering timely. It wasn’t me it was the post office.

I'm a full time eBay seller and just had my first actual, provable scam take place last month. I had purchased an overstock pallet of dehumidifiers. All were new in box and I had 36 of them. The next to last one I sold, the buyer received it and quickly asked for a return the same day. I have 30 day returns, so I had to accept. The buyer quickly left me positive feedback saying how much they love the unit. I thought to myself, "well, if you love it so much, why don't you keep it?!". Well, that's exactly what they did. The box I received back was the original box, but inside was this disgusting, wet, mold and sticker covered dehumidifier from a different brand. I was incensed! Now, I never call eBay, but I did in this case. The non English speaking rep told me that I had to refund, but because I was top rated, I could withhold up to 50%. He tried to make it sound like that was some special favor he was doing for me even though we get that option on all returns. Still though, this was a scam and I wasn't about to refund anything. I reached out to eBay for Business on Facebook, which I should have done first. I made the complaint initially, but then it dawned on me. Every one of those dehumidifiers weighted 27 pounds. The one that was sent back to me, with shipping purchased through ebay, was 35 pounds. I suggested they check the USPS records since they weigh everything to confirm this discrepancy which proved he didn't send back the same item. Support said I didn't have to pay, but that they would cover the refund. Argh! On one hand I'm glad I got off the hook, but on the other, this will just encourage the pathetic thieves to continue scamming people. Ebay needs to grow a backbone and stand by their sellers. I've been on since 2000 and still have a 100% feedback score and do 6 figures in sales a year. If I say I've been scammed, I've been scammed.

I had that happen with the corner garage LEGO set I sold. The person said they didn't get it, tracking showed they did. eBay sides with me. 3 weeks later, the buyer said I sent an empty box eBay reverses the decision and gives the money back to the buyer. I call, they reopened the case and still side with the buyer. I then called every hour to argue with them, long story short they paid me the $400 but the buyer also got to keep their refund. I do see they are no longer a registered user though. Just call, argue, call again do online chat. Just don't let them win.

What’s sad is I known photograph the item, the packaging material and the box, then I take a picture of the item wrapped, then the item in the box then the label showing their address and finally at the post office with the shipping label so when I contact the buyer with the tracking information I upload the pictures to them as well. It’s unfortunately come to doing this to protect myself, not the buyer.

Ebay needs to assign each buyer a return/claim rate, which shows sellers the number of returns divided by the number of purchases. Ebay sellers should be able to block anyone wiht over a 10 percent return rate from buying their products.
