What do you say to my Spanish and Portuguese speaking brethren? And before you say it.. there's no English to Spanish equivalent of the Reina Valera . And even the two or three out there are competing for relevance within the Spanish ifb church community. I own a Reina Valera purificada. It's not word for word verbatim the KJV translated. I know. I'm fully bilingual.

@@warnerchandler9826 there are too many GREAT things... regarding the King James to keep anything brief.. I don't even count it's poetry or archaic language use among the reason I am a KJV Onlyist... One main reason I am one.. is because for the last few years.. I have been examining the liberties and how corrupt the Modern translations are... even Frank Logsdon... one of the main editors.. of the NASB for the Lockman Corporation.. repented of the abomination... as he calls it .. which he heled to create.. I think when one who was once an advocate for a translation comes back later and repudiates all his work... and asks God to forgive him.. for his sin... that says a lot.. as far as the NKJV.?.. well these translators... just under handedly LIED to everyone.... in their premise to the original 1982 NKJV.. they state that the NKJV was created as a transition bible... for those who wished to get away from the language of the KJV... yet keep the same structure of the verses... in other words,, the verses would STILL mean the same as they did in the KJV... well that was a LIE.. many verses were altered without cause...and the unsuspecting public is None the wiser... the ESV is loaded with changes to verses that at best many verses seem to contradict itself.... and the NIV.. is wrought with the same translational flaws as some of these other ones have... especially the NIV2011... compare Mark 1:41 from the NIV 2011 to any other translation and you will see this... the King James.. is the ONLY safe reliable translation to use.. nowadays...

Hi Mark… I was just interviewed on the topic of self-care… I am a retired Prison Chaplain of a maximum security adult male prison.. over 25 years I saw much violence that never makes it into the tv prison shows… I heard more toxic language, thought and worldviews virtually everyday, from inmates and staff… I congratulate you on your decisions concerning engagement with KJV- Onlyism… take care of your soul, mind, and spirit… self-care and times of withdrawal are not to be construed as ‘surrender’… I think of Jesus, and how often he withdrew to have times of solitude and prayer…. I have become free from the chains of bondage that KJVO was for me. I grew up in a church that thought Jesus Christ himself wrote the words in King James English, and they believed that all other translations were imposters. After a lifetime of feeling chained to the King James translation, the deep fear that was drilled into me for reading any other translations, because they all had some kind of hidden agenda to mislead readers and get them backslidden, and them doing so by adding to, or taking away from God’s Word. The inward guilt, shame and condemnation I felt at times was very heavy. And all because of my wanting to read a different English translation just for better understanding? I no longer feel guilt, shame or condemnation. I no longer fear being mislead, or subjected to some evil hidden agenda. I no longer feel the need to have a King James Bible strapped to me at all times, just to compare when I read a different translation. Although I have over my lifetime memorized King James verses only, I no longer do so. When I memorize Scripture I do so with any translation I want, or like. I owe my freedom from this ball and chain, in part, to you, Mark Ward. I found your channel last summer and I want to thank you wholeheartedly for enduring whatever persecution and hardships you endured to set people free from that heavy bondage. Freedom from that kind of oppression sure feels good. God bless you.

After reflection, I have only one comment. If those who support KJV-Only are true Christians or become Christians as a result of reading the KJV Bible, then I am satisfied. An argument doesn't change anything important. I will just smile at them and press on. I choose to use other translations as well as KJV. I learn more from the interaction. The main issue is whether people are won to the Lord regardless of where they are exposed to the gospel. I used a very simple translation of English when I led a Japanese church and I am convinced they became Christians as a result. We used other translations when I spoke to the people of Malawi and they came to the Lord as well. The main thing is the gospel, however we present it as long as it is biblical.

Man, the point you made about syntax is so key. Difficult or out of date words are greatly handled by books like yours Mark, but my issues with reading the KJV has always been sentence structure. I have so often read a chapter from the KJV and then read it in a modern translation and realized I have missed very important points. Not because of archaic words, but because of syntax. @@BibleThumpr I really recommend looking at interlinear Bibles too, even mechanical translations like the Mechanical Translation Project or even BibleHub which has a very good one which helps you to acquire vocabulary of the Hebrew words of the Old Testament. It does take more time to use an interlinear - that’s if you are using it to find more about what the actual original meaning is. The Hebrew Old Testament is brilliant because there are many play-on-words that are completely missed because of translation and ties to prophecy. King James was the first Bible version I ever read and was my number 1 for years until I became aware that it was not perfect and still much to be learned by looking at the original language of either the OT and NT. There are also connections between words used in one place which point to another specific place in scripture with that same Hebrew word, and we know live in the technology age and have the opportunity to use these tools to further grow in knowledge and save time than the previous generations. It’s also easier for us to take these things for granted. There are many times I have found the KJV completely translate a word that is misleading of the original Hebrew.. which can change the whole meaning. For example, off the top of my head, regarding a really important prophecy in Ezekiel, where the Hebrew says literally “the land of Kenani (Canaan/Canaanites)” and the translations has it as “the land of merchants.” Well, a lot of the prophecies would become so much more clear by seeing the original language

The KJV also includes significant translation errors (because the Translators were familiar with Classical Greek not the Koine Greek that the New Testament was actually written in) along with quite deliberate mistranslations in the entire Bible.

@ There are dozens of them, including “Unicorn” (Rhinoceros), inserting references to witches in place of the original “Poisoner” (James had a thing about witches), removing all references to “tyrants” (another thing James was sensitive about), editing the eighth commandment (which in the original Hebrew was about wage theft) (slavery was still a “thing”), the geographical errors caused because the Greeks didn’t have words for places (a particular problem for the original Septuagint translators)….

In that satirical horror-action movie, extraterrestrials have taken over human society undetected, and they hide subliminal messages everywhere: billboards, magazines, and so on. The only way to see the messages for what they are--and to spot who is or isn't an alien in disguise--is to wear a pair of sunglasses (which work almost like 3D specs). The hidden messages say things like, "Obey," "Consume," "Reproduce," and "Stay Asleep." I spent 14 years dealing with Mormonism every day. I didn't believe that I needed to leave that work, but God so ordered my circumstances that I did leave, and in the almost 30 years since then I've realized that God in fact doesn't want me in that ministry anymore, except as local, specific opportunities come my way. The "fire" that God kindled in me for that work, He put out when it was time for me to do other things. So I know something, if not everything, about your current situation. May God bless you in your new and different endeavors. As a side note, when I came to Christ in 1983 I didn't even know there was any other translation than the KJV. I wound up being KJV-only, but though I never had any serious problems understanding the KJV, I eventually came to see that KJV-onlyism is both contrary to the KJV, to the KJV's own translators, and to plain reason. I tested multiple translations, and settled on the 1995 NASB, which I used for about 20 years. Then when the Legacy Standard Bible came out I examined it, and I've now been using it for a couple or three years. Just as I don't know Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and thus require the Bible in English, so I'm not living in the 17th century but the 21st, and require a translation that, without being untrue to the original text, and without descending into mere transitory slang, is in current English. 🙂

Wheras your experience was positive with KJV onlyism my only interactions have negative with someone refusing to allow my NIV in the church revival services and random parishioners who refused to listen to any discussion and left. . I have family members who treat me as non Christian due to refusing to accept their KJV only ideas a they will put my other translations in drawers lest their children get ahold of and be deceived. I appreciate the attitude, original approach, and intent. The KJV only crowd can be incredibly hard crowd to reason with and you've demonstrated far more charity and patience than I have. . Yes, my sister calls it the, "Nearly Inspired Version" - however- I see some marked improvement in the 2011 NIV. I will use it sometimes. "An unused Bible is a terrible waste."

I didn't have to make up my positive experiences. They really were positive. But I recognize that others have seen family division, broken engagements, lost friendships because of KJV-Onlyism. I will never get to preach at the church I attended in high school unless they leave KJV-Onlyism. And some people from my Christian school who ought to be my friends are not because of it. I have faced loss, too.

My one experience with this crowd is incredibly negative with what I hope does not represent the mainline KJV only crowd and except for quotation in old books I've never read tge KJV and have no sentimental attachment to it. My wife grew up in a now defunct KJV only church and had an incredible experience and even uses it for her devotions.

I will note, PCC is making strides to leave extreme IFB fundamentalism. There’s been some…. Policy changes in the last year where it’s becoming a little more evangelical friendly, and less IFB. I think the women are allowed to wear pants there now. And they associate with non IFB, non strict KJVo, congregations in the area. I have some mutual connections in the area so I love hearing progress in that world. I heard they have non KJVo staff. But the dress code change is a huge deal there, it was always held to the same level of standard as their translational preference, in my opinion!

I was never a KJV-onlyist, but I was a KJV-bestist personally. I especially never disparaged those who didn't use the KJV. I thank Mark for his work and for opening my eyes about other versions. I have Authorized on Audible. I have three nice KJV Bibles within view in this room, but I pick up and read my NASB1995 now.

I believe that as ministers, we must look deeper into Hebrew and Greek This is my desire to look deeper. Also, I believe that God has allowed his word to be translated into to various languages. Dear Dr. Ward. You know the NT was written in the Koine Greek. The kitchen language. The language spoken by the everyday housewife, child, sandwich making teen. You know the NT was never intended to be a scholarly work of art (even though it is). The intentions are clear, but our minds are not. Gay used to mean happy. Thee, thou, art not should not understand the words precedethness from thy lips. You fought a good fight, and I for one would like to use your videos for my ministry. My specialty is with other fish, but the fish you fried sets me at ease for conversations with the KJV Only movement. Keep to the kitchen language. Thats where we educate our children, not where we debate stiff-necked people.

Dear Mark, Thanks for your video. I could say much about it but I will be short and say it is a good decision. I am interested in seeing how the next year will go. I pray that it is successful, and that God will meet all your and your family’s needs. On your book I want to thank you for your book. You have been so generous with your time and talents that I thought it was only fair for me to get a copy. What struck me the most was where you talked about the things we lose with the passing of the KJV as a central focus of our Christian life. I too miss how it binds us as a people and I also miss the place it had in our culture. On a related matter, I have a similar feeling about the loss of many of the old hymns we used to sing. When I was growing up I could go into most of the churches I knew and find myself singing similar songs like “Amazing Grace”, “Just as I Am” and “How Great Thou Art”. A regular diet of these hymns was supplemented with “modern” “Scripture in song”. These became a familiar buttress to my Christian life. Now the churches I associate with sing an everchanging collection of modern worship songs. Just like contemporary versions of the Bible, I enjoy many of them. It is good to enjoy the work of so many gifted artists and see younger people profit from them. Yet, just like the KJV, I miss the regular old and familiar voice of those old hymns. An Idea I have an idea that you may want to pass on to someone following in your footsteps. I think it might tie into what you mentioned about syntax. I noticed that some KJVo people have mentioned that readability is a personal or ill-defined concept. And I think they do have a point. How do you decide if something is readable? It also raises questions like: How much does the use of only a KJV affect people’s use and understanding of the Bible? They say people can understand it o. Do they? How much effort and help do people need to understand the KJV? I believe that using only a KJV discourages people from reading the Bible. Am I right? It may be worthwhile for someone to clarify some of these questions by doing a survey or study on some of these questions. Your survey and the KJV Parallel Bible project helped your case because they provided some factual evidence to support your arguments. Some studies on how well the Bible is read and understood may also be beneficial in a similar way. For example, one might be able to say: Non-Christians are ?x more likely to read a Bible if it is a newer translation is used. ?x cannot understand a particular passage using a KJV but can with a NIV or NKJV. It takes ??? amount of time longer to understand the KJV using helps compared with another translation. I am not sure how much time this would take or if it would be worth the expense, but it may be worth it if helps in turning an abstract idea into a something tangible one. While I think we can have areas of focus it’s best to be a well rounded Christian theologian who has a broad as well as deep understanding of Scripture and theological topics. Hi Mark, if I understand your comments about the new direction for the channel then I am very excited. I've even become a member to support the work. One issue I have seen among those of us who are non-KJV onlyists is the unstated but implied idea that a person does not really "know" the Bible until they read it in the original languages. While I understand the importance and value of learning the biblical languages, I worry we have made their comprehension an artificial divide in the body. Can I really say that the young seminary graduate who just learned Greek and Hebrew really "knows" the word of God better than the 80 year old grandmother that has been in that word daily for decades in English? I see this idea crop up often, especially among laypeople, who assume that the "real" meaning of God's word lays hidden from them behind the Greek and Hebrew. It has always struck me as problematic, especially since I am in the protestant tradition, which labored so long to render the Bible in the language of the peoples.

I'm not sure if it was in the TBS booklet mentioned, but in one of them I found it odd in a supposedly serious defence of only using the AV/KJV that some reasons for insisting on it were to ensure people would still want to use hymn books with thees and thous and I think it also said that using modern Bibles would lead to people not praying in archaic English... It's hard to engage on issues with reason when emotion seems to be heavily influencing thinking. Thanks for all the useful videos. I will continue to read the NIV, CSB & NKJV (and sing old hymns whenever I can!)

Mark, over the years I've watched most of your videos and have been blessed by your expertise. I remember when I was young, I was kind of that mindset but eventually came to the same conclusions you have so brilliantly made in each of your vlogs, but because of interactions with some of the most vitriolic and unreasonable people in my world you have helped me express the truth in a clear and logical way. Once you see the truth you can't unsee it and then you wonder why it is so hard for the KJV Onlyists to see it. Most of the KJV Onlyists I've known only repeat emotionally charged cliches. One of these days I'm wanting to apologize to you face to face, and having said that, I know I need to be more reflective on my writing style, but there's one obscure subject that dips into apologetics, Mark, that Bible believers almost never talk about, and that is the necessity for true believers to have Christ's glory, as a result of union In Christ, so we could actually see the Father directly without being zapped. I'm not a writer, but you are. Anyway, you did say you were praying for direction, and that's what really matters! You have more than done enough putting the truth out in clear and plain language. If KJV Only zealots refuse to accept the truth or acknowledge the evil they have wrought on innocent souls they will have to answer for at the judgement. A new direction for you might be to reveal the truth of the gospel found in all of the best selling non TR translations. Given your talent in explaining scripture clearly that might be especially beneficial to new believers. In reality the gospel revealed in NKJ, NASB, NIV, ESV, etc. all speak to the lost as well as Christians in language they can understand. May you have a blessed 2025.
