This song still sounds good 45 years later ... unlike many Academy best song wins. It's timeless.

In the summer of 1963 I worked at a camp on Catalina Island where Keith was a junior counselor. Never would’ve guessed in a million years that this shy, quiet, gangly kid would go on to enjoy the remarkably successful career he did. Well, he had great genes, that’s for sure!

A well deserved surprise! Surprisingly it was the sole song nominee from the film when there are several that were just as deserving. Yes everyone believed the Ross song would get it, even after all the brouhaha (I believe it was because the song had been written a few years before and/or not for the film). Having Diana appear 'live' from Amsterdam in the middle of the night to sing it was supposed to be the clincher. Instead it proved the be the sinker! And the great John Carradine? Class Act!
@michaelmuldowney83 жыл бұрын
At the times music branch rules restricted only one song per film could be nominated. This rule was changed at the end of the 1970’s - Fame became the first film to have two songs nominated.

There is no video of Keith Carradine performing I'm easy at the Oscars that night? I've been looking for that. I have a recollection of Bernadette Peters doing some big production number, and of Keith Carradine coming out and being alone on the stage and singing his song with the guitar. Would love to see it again.

Never cared for the "Theme from Mahogony" IMO, just a poor imitation of Mancini, Legrand or Mercer... Carradine deserved the win.
@simonsmatthew3 ай бұрын
I think it is a damn good song, although I agree the right song won - especially when you see it in the context of the movie. Both Michael Masser and Gerry Goffin were very fine songwriters in their own right. Masser was discovered by Mercer, who was his mentor.

"I'm Easy" is not bad. But, theme from 'Mahogany' is much more musical
@supremes19643 жыл бұрын
Mahogany never had a chance! The Academy never did cared for the song......it had been written years before (a cover song) and not for a movie ..... the dislike of Ross from the final voters as it was in 1982 with "Endless Love" both lost.
@donbrown12843 жыл бұрын
He really should have thanked Robert Altman. It's a mediocre song lent enormous power by the context in which it is place in the film, "Nashville". That's what the Academy was rewarding, not the notes.
@jm16572 жыл бұрын
He thanked Mr. Altman at the start of his speech.
@simonsmatthew3 ай бұрын
I agree. This song won (and rightly so) because it was perfect in the movie and it is an award for a song in the context of a movie. In many ways, particularly with its multiple irony, it was probably the best example of the use of a song in a movie ever. If it was just about notes and lyrics I do not think it would have won.
@BarrieMil12 жыл бұрын

You have to see how this song was used in the movie to understand why it won. It was probably the best use of a song in a movie ever. Layers of irony in it - he was singing to an audience in the film, but the film's audience knew what he was really saying. If it was just about notes/lyrics alone, probably, yes, Mahogony would have won.
