The true magic of Band-Maid IMO is their sense of melody, ironically enough. Their songs ooze melodies that stick in my head, and it's not just vocal melodies. There are plenty of instrumental melodies in the songs as well. I've never hummed so many guitar and bass solos in my life as I have with this band. The guitar solo for this song is a good case in point. It lives rent free in my head.

I've been listening to a little Band Maid every day for 5 years. Often, in my head I hear Band Maid, with all the details, I really like it. For me, I would like all Band Maid songs to be in Japanese, I don't look at the text, the voice is an instrument, I feel the emotions and my brain 'composes an image'.

I am not a musician by any standard and couldn't carry a tune in a pickup truck. After first hearing Band-Maid, I knew they were great, but I wanted to know why. So, I started watching Band-Maid reactions specifically by musicians. For me, the more they interrupt to explain techniques, the better. Though I've already listened to the song they're reacting to countless times, reactors like yourself often point out certain aspects that I missed every time I listened to that song. I still can't describe the difference between a chromatic and an arpeggio, but I do have to say the Band-Maid has taught me how to actually LISTEN to music and recognize things I've never heard for over 65 year. Look forward to your future Band-Maid reactions so I can continue learning why they are so great.

Yeah can speak from experience that when I first heard Band maid I was like…. “Meh nothings clicking” “it’s all blending” in but one day “No god” popped up and the melody just suddenly clicked for me. Then I went on a rampage of all their songs and everything just kept clicking from there on.

@@idk2545it’s the same with me. It’s Interesting you noted ‘ ‘ No God’ as your turning point. It was a song I just could grasp the melody until it just clicks. It seems every aspect of the song just came to me in a live show. I’m not a musician but as been noted by many BM fans. They never repeat a verse the same way so on first listen, the melodies may not be grabbing. But they are so often catchy enough that they’ll catch on and stay. They are not the clingy songs like pop and will remain recognized whenever being played.

Thanks for the reaction and comments. Saiki (lead vocal) wrote the lyrics to convey her disgust and discontentment of her friend's cheating husband. As for the melodies, give your brain time to acclimate. It will eventually register and then stick once your brain gets used to their sound. It's like listening to Rachmaninov's piano concertos performed live for the first time after only having heard pop music on the radio. Why don't you randomly check out one of their many official live videos. They're all great. Cheers!

I don't speak Japanese and absolutely have no issues finding the melody lines. But that may because the instruments I play generally carry melody lines and I've been conditioned to listen for it. It has nothing to do with language as I simply treat Saiki's voice like another instrument. Just like I would for other styles of music like choral music or opera.

Saiki wrote the lyrics after a relationship breakup where a man left another female performer in Japan during the pandemic. Saiki wanted a song with really strong emotions she could sink her teeth into. After reading the lyrics you get a sense that the guy was pretty much useless and not much of a catch. If you hear that Misa/Kanami battle as a shouting match argument between a man and woman maybe heard through the wall of an apartment, that's the right vibe for it. You can tell Kanami absolutely won that argument

It's amazing how Band-Maid has rewritten the laws of nature: Hate brings Love! 😖--->🎀--->😍BTW -- I just watched the incredible "BAND-MAID 10TH ANNIVERSARY TOUR SPIN OFF" live-stream concert (on Zaiko). Listen fans and Maidiacs... seriously, if you've ever seen Band-Maid live, you know they play at an extremely high level of performance and execution. And there is no band that I'm aware of playing today, other than The Warning, that has a better, more extensive catalog of majorly awesome songs. I would place this concert among the top of all Band-Maid concerts for insane playing, setlist, and audio quality, and is even better than Yokohama for an audio experience from video, imo. To put it simply, this concert punches hard and totally worth the few bucks to experience it! When I was watching it, I was thinking about how The Warning, following Band-Maid (I believe) at their June 12, 2-man concert, is going to feel about it! I know I wouldn't want to follow the Maids! However, The Warning has all the earned confidence in the world! 🎀🤘😜🤘🎀 The concert is available to view on archive until 2024/05/28 (bandmaid.tokyo/contents/742715) Thx, Tec!

The key to "Getting" Band-Maid is more Band-Maid. Their very large and diverse catalog of music is a showcase of genres and styles. Showing both technical skill and lyrical skill. It isn't just 5 instrumentalists and a singer. It is 5 musicians. One of whom is playing 2 instruments, her guitar, AND her voice. Without those 5 instruments and those 2 voices, I highly doubt I would enjoy their music as much as I do.

For none native speakers of Japanese, I see and agree to your point that it can be hard to "hum" a song of theirs the next day. They have extremely catchy choruses that makes your smile and dance in your chair to in moment but yes, unless they do something like Hello Hello He.. it can be hard to remember the melody the day after. BUT, - what you will remember the day after and beyond is their smiles, their interactions with each other and their fans and the pure love for what they are doing. That in itself, in my opinion, is just as good. Excellent reaction Sir

Not sure what to tell you about "memorable melodies" with BAND-MAID songs as that has never been a problem for me. The opposite really. I've noticed there are some people that need to focus on lyrics in order to engage with a song - they need to be able to sing along with it. I've never paid that much attention to lyrics, myself, but trying to sing a song in a language you don't understand could be problematic. I just hum along with the melody like Saiki - la lala lala. Try the song 'Bubble'. If that groove doesn't get stuck in your head . . . I don't know what will.

Notice that Akane is changing the pattern even so slightly when the solo is shifting between guitar and base. I don't speak Japanese, and don't really care what the translation says. For me the singing is another instrument in the mix. I then find that after hearing a given song a few times, the "melody" I end up humming afterwards is the vocals. Not the words she's saying. But the tonality and rhythm of what she is singing, and how she sings it. And not the whole song. Just some segment of it. The same way that when you hear some classic rock song and it gets stuck in your head all day. It's not the whole song that keeps popping up over and over in your head. It's some key section of it.

You’re right that Japanese is spoken with a steady, stacatto rhythm (alternating between two pitches), but I can’t get the vocal melody out of my head. SAIKI is a fabulous vocalist. Their songs DAYDREAMING (MV), WONDERLAND (live), SMILE, GLORY, SAYONAKIDORI and CATHARSIS (both from the Christmas 2021 acoustic stream), and the latest single, BESTIE, are especially melodic. As you listen to more songs you will see their versatility.

Hate? was song #27 of 33 (3.5 hrs). That is the incredible thing about them. Being able to keep that energy up for that long, they are World class athletes in my book (especially Akane and #27 was shortly after her freestyle solo into Blackhole (220 bpm)), Po! That's why Akane is just holding down the pocket here. Btw, Saiki (lead V) wrote the lyrics from a 4th person prospective (Cheater, Victim, Mistress, Saiki).Side note: it appears Saiki is a "The Simpsons" fan, and wanted to use Bart's "I Hate you" phrase in a song, and here we have it, Po! As a Japanese native speaker and Bass player, I always thought that songs in Japanese, like German, was the alter ego to the Romance language, i.e., Spanish. But with Band Maid, Miku (2nd V, Rhythm G, 1st lyricist) has ingeniously created a groove in blending both the Japanese and English lingo, i.e. McDonalds for us is 3 syllable and 6 (2) syllables (Ma-ku-do-na-ru-do or Ma-ku (slang in Tokyo)) in Japanese. She makes it work to fit the bars, Po! Therefore, whatever the melody, the words surprisingly grooves, planting that melody in my brain for days, lol! And we haven't venture into Japanese culture and philosophy, that another ball of wax in her writing, Po! 🦍🍌

I would suggest listening to "From Now On" (official music video) because it is an outstanding piece with some solid drum work, and it is instrumental -- so no language issues. Guitar, drums, and bass each get a shorter or longer feature, but the guitar is really the "vocalist" in this "song". This is their musicianship on display. Alternatively, "Blooming" -- you should be able to remember "Far away -- take me somewhere far away" afterwards -- and Akane gallops on the drums in this song. I can remember Band-Maid's songs and sing parts of them in my head. I don't always get the Japanese lyrics correct, or even the English ones, but I find them memorable -- or in one case "Memorable" (a song by them).

"Hate?" was composed by Kanami, but the lyrics were written by Saki, instead of Miku. I understand what you mean about melody. I have the same problem. It takes me a couple of times before I get the melody. I suspect it is because "western" music tends to have one main melody that all the instruments support. Sometimes one instrument will divert from it, but they almost always return to the main melody. Band-Maid often has more than one melody going at the same time, so humming it is difficult. It is like humming a piano piece written for 2 hands, you need to choose which hand to follow 😁 If you want an example of this, try "Yolo". I swear MISA and Kanami are not playing the same song, and neither is in any way related to what Saiki is singing. But somehow it fits together, and I absolutely love it. If you want something easier to wrap your head around (but equally impressive) I recommend Influencer.

In an interview, Saiki explained about the "?" mark in the title of this song. When Saiki wrote the lyrics, she wanted to use the phrase "I hate you". She decided the title to be "HATE", and then she realized that "HATE" could be read "はて" in Japanese. Because "はて" is typically used in question, she put "?" to make the title "HATE?". I'm sure that Saiki was smiling a lot when decided on this title with "?" because she guessed that English speaking fans would be puzzled by it😏 "はて?" can be translated as "What?"😉

Interesting points about the lyrical style differences between English and Japanese. For me, I found when I started listening to Japanese music (it comprises about 75% of what I listen to now) that I really enjoyed the rhythmic/percussive nature of the vocal lines. Now, I OFTEN wake up with a random Band-Maid song on repeat in my head. It may even be a track that I haven't heard in a while. The Band-Maid song that is absolutely lodged in my cerebral cortex right now is "Bestie", their latest release, but it's all in English. So, as a result, I have now confused even myself (low bar) 😂 Anyway, maybe try "Bestie" and/or "Choose Me". See if they "stick". Thanks for checkin' out the Maids! 🕊

Interesting what you say. Personally I find their music catchy. Actually what drew me to Band-Maid (despite finding the image very offputting) was that they were the first super-technical/experimental band I'd heard that also grabbed me in a more basic way with their energy/emotion/catchiness. And I've been following music since the 80s. I've since discovered other (mostly Japanese, but not all) bands who have achieved the same and it has been a revelation that it's even possible. But we're all different, and maybe you're right and it typically takes a while to get used to. It's a bit of a meme about Band-Maid that their songs are always better on the 10th listen - or the 100th for that matter. I started with their earlier music which is not as technical as this (e.g. Alone, Puzzle, Moratorium, Non-Fiction Days, Dice - even Thrill). Who knows, maybe if Hate had been my first Band-Maid song, I'd have said the same thing. But I can absolutely hum it to myself at any time despite not knowing Japanese.

I've lived in Japan for more than 40 years teaching English. I speak Japanese and learned about it to help my students understand how English differs from it. The main point is that Japanese is a syllabic-timed language rather than a stress-timed language like English. In Japanese, the word banana, for example, is pronounced ba-na-na with no stress on any of the syllables, the same length for them, and all of the vowel sounds the same. English, on the other hand, pronounces it as buh-NAAAA-nuh, with the stress on the second syllable lengthening it and with the first and third syllables reduced in length and with the vowel sounds changed to schwas. To native-English-speaking ears, Japanese pronunciation sounds more rat-tat-tat, which is why you perceive it as being percussive. In music, there is usually a stress/accent on the downbeat, so in that sense English fits somewhat better in music because it's a stress-timed language. Other languages, including Japanese, can be used in music, of course, though sometimes they don't fit as well. An example of this that I heard soon after I came to Japan was while watching the musical Jesus Christ Superstar being performed in Japanese. There's a very powerful scene where Jesus is talking to God and sings in a descending melody, "But if I die." Each word has a stress and importance. The Japanese version was "Wa-ta-shi-wa," which simply means "I" (as a subject/topic of the sentence). The rest of the meaning was conveyed in the words that followed. I was really struck with how difficult it was to fit words and sounds into music then, especially translations. Maybe this is why Miku sometimes uses English words in her lyrics--she thinks they fit the song better, which is kind of an interesting concept. When I use English with a native Japanese speaker (like my wife), I sometimes want to put Japanese words in what I say because they just seem to "fit" better and the listener would understand them.

And the story is that a friend of Saiki's (lead singer) was cheated on by her husband so she wrote the lyrics and Kanami states that she was in an angry mood when she wrote this tune. Dude... there is a lot of lore around the origin to the lyrics. some say that it's about a friend of Saiki being cheated on and this is her channeling her frustration. At least it's about her disdain of cheaters. One thing we can say for sure. Don't piss off Saiki, or she would do a "Taylor Swift" on you!

Don't know, the melody usually sticks with me even if the words don't, but it did take me a handful to get past the 'is this an anime theme song?' impression. I am a long time flute player, though. Maybe because I almost always got the melody in band, I pick it out easier? You could try About us, it's a bit more of a ballad for them, or, Influencer music video has the words on screen.

I play trumpet, guitar and keyboards and have absolutely no problems finding/hearing the melody line. When I listen to foreign language music, I ignore the meaning of the words per se and try to listen to how the words sound on context to the rest of the song. Saiki's voice is simply another instrument at that point.

Nice. Check out the instrumental From Now On for both the drummer and a memorable melody. Japanese has percussive onsets to the syllables, but vowels can be held out to add emotive sound. Check out Band Maid's Puzzle Acoustic performance. The percussive onset does make it easier to integrate the vocals with the hard onsets of rock instruments. The lead vocal is really good at that so that in many of their newer songs, the vocals become instruments in the ensemble. Check out Blooming or Different MVs or Manners/Black Hole Official Live Video. As far as catchy melodies are concerned, I think that is a "getting used to it" thing. Many of Kanami's melodies stick with me while the melodies I hear in much English rock and pop have become syrupy sweet to my ears. (Of course, I have always liked intense jazz and orchestral music which have melodies that please me but sound like noise to my friends, lol.)

Haha. She hates her friend's cheating husband. Big scandal in Japan back in 2020 with a well known pop singer and her voice acting husband. As far as melodies, if you find yourself being dependent upon an English phrase in order to remember the melody, you could have trouble. But the melodic hooks are there, especially with Freedom or Domination. Many of their songs have an English defining hook, while the details remain in Japanese. I'd say not to put a timeline on getting the melody stuck in your head but one listen is certainly NOT enough. 😁

Brilliant commentary and I completely understand what you’re describing. This is my favorite performance of one of my least favorite Band Maid songs. Not a fan of the lyrics, honestly. It’s an example of their more dense structure which almost hides the groove, for me personally. And apparently, for you too! The language barrier isn’t the issue because Saiki’s voice can be another melodic instrument. I’m all about the melodic rock and the Maids definitely deliver. Many Maidiacs are not musicians, so they don’t really hear what we hear. Which leads to recommendations of songs like this one. Here are some of my favorite Maid tracks that stick that melody: “Don’t you tell ME,” official live from Yokohama. One of my top 3 all time. “DICE,” OMV Hair metal done Maid style with rumbling drums and bass setting up a riff-based track. Another of the top 3. “Manners,” Funky hard rock. The official live is a two song “Manners/Black Hole” if you’re interested in just listening to the first song (ends @4:18) The groove gets laid down right out of the box. “Turn Me On,” 2018 Zepp live show. An oft overlooked banger with a chunky riff-chorus. Not many reactors have had the privilege of hearing it Ok. If you’ve read this far you deserve number one ☝🏽 “Moratorium,” live @Zepp Tokyo. Infectious chorus, and one of the greatest breakdown solos ever ❤

The bass and guitar Call & Response "Battle" has been compared to the argument Saiki and the object of her hate must have had to cause her to write the song. If you want something memorable try 'Memorable', or 'Endless Story' from this same show. Or, really any of the softer side of BAND-MAID, like 'About Us' or the acoustic version of 'Sayonakidori. You want insane drums? And the best bassist, period? Check out Manowar's The Demon's Whip. They get up to about 240 bpm at the end. Or you could check out Manowar's Achilles Agony & Ecstasy in 8 Parts. It's 28+ minutes long, but there is a section called The Armor of the Gods (IIRC) that is a ridiculous drum solo.

The ? In the name of this song I believe is kind of a pun in Japanese because it doesn’t actually make sense to have it in English, as there is no question about the dislike the lyrics have for someone (10 minutes of limp gymnastics, yikes). As far as the catchiness, they do incorporate English lyrics so that they can get those catchy melodies, or just sounds. For examples of this try out Endless Story or No God. I find the bits that get stuck in my head are guitar riffs, and other instrumental things.

“Who does she hate?” I believe the answer is her friend’s ex-boyfriend. That boyfriend cheated on Saiki’s friend, and Saiki ended up writing this song from her friend’s perspective. Her friend is less confrontational, so this song is kinda like a way for Saiki to speak for her friend, based on how Saiki herself would feel if she were in the same position. I could be wrong, because I’m going on what I heard someone else say from a translation of an interview. I consider myself to be a big Band-Maid fan, but I know there are super fans who probably know better and could correct me if I’m wrong

I actually agree with you on this, though you should probably listen to a few of their instrumentals to judge it for yourself. From Now On comes to mind. Honestly, I have always found their music catchy as hell, just like many people here, but it mostly comes from the instrumental side of it. As much as I love Band Maid, their lyrical melody is... above average at best, which is further worsened by their tendency for overuse of English. It's not at all a bad thing to write lyrics in two languages, nor is Saiki's accent a problem, but I have only noticed 3 or 4 times in their whole catalogue where the english part actually makes the song catchier than otherwise. Most of the time though, the incongruity sticks out like a sore thumb. And no, I don't think it is because of the Japanese language. I have listened to a lot of Japanese music in my life and am currently playing for a band in Japan as well. Good lyrical melodies do *exist* in Japanese. Now, Band Maid is still my favourite band of all time, but please, Band Maid fans, save us the embarrassment and accept that they are imperfect, and that there is still room for growth, which is a good thing. They are absolute masters at their instruments and songwriting, paralleled only by their passion for music, but their lyrical melodies aren't at all up there, and that's fine.

Good point! I think part of it is that their music is rarely simple and repetitive. The music and the vocal melody need each other to make the song. They have many instrumental videos of their songs. Often I have difficulty recognizing the song. And if you hear the vocals separately, they often don't sound right either.

Japanese is percussive and has less inflection than English. I think that perception is correct. Japanese is included in the agglutinative language. This fact indicates that unlike English, where the grammatical role is determined by the word order, the grammatical role is determined by the suffixes, making it possible to place words in any order and making it easy to omit the subject, a characteristic of the Japanese language. I believe this is the reason why Japanese sounds percussive with little intonation depending on the linguistic region to which the speaker belongs. And now, let's hear the song “HATE?”, The lyrics of the song “HATE?” are not a song about a person's feelings in the face of social contradictions, nor about the beauty of love in a relationship between a man and a woman, nor about a person's longing for a partner in a relationship between a man and a woman. This song is about a relationship, but it is not a love song. The lyrics of this song are about a lover who has cheated on his girlfriend, “I never want to see your face again, don't you ever show up in front of me again!” The song sings. This “hate?” song is absolutely impossible for a male metal band to sing. It is also not appropriate for a beautiful female singer or a K-pop group. Only a female band with a solid career and overwhelming performance ability could have written this song.

Listen to a song more than ten times and it is in your head. I disagree with your saying it isn't melodic. Actually all Asian languages are more sing song than ours. Our sounds are hard and guteral, coming from the German influences in it! Just my thoughts!

You touched on a very important subject; Japanese is a syllable-timed language; English is a stress-timed language. Japanese can be set very successfully to melodic lines in music, but it does take skill. For me BAND-MAID are somewhat above mid-tier in this respect; better than most but not quite as good as some other Japanese bands. BAND-MAID _can_ hit the memorable melodic lines, e.g. "Daydreaming": kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHTEloihp66nr7s and "Page": kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKmmm3iracRqqLc An example of a band I find better at setting Japanese to memorable melodic lines and hooks is Bray me, e.g. their song "Marley": kzbin.info/www/bejne/sKSQeZp8rKmmbLc
